Due to the various, requirements of nontraditional applications, extensibility of database management systems has become a theme for several research projects. In this paper, we present an object-oriented design and implementation of an extensible environment for object-oriented databases. At the outset, we classify extensibility into logical and physical extensibility. We further categorize the three predominent ways to achieve the above extensibility features. Our approach can be categorized as a mixture of the open architecture and open class hierarchy approaches. The schema level is captured as classes and the instance level as objects. Logical extensibility arises because the database schema components, such as Class, InstanceVariable, and Method, are manipulated as user classes and are subject to schema evolution operations. Physical extensibility in the system is provided by making the system implementation information available to the database engineer for adding a new subclass, such as a new access method, to the implementation class hierarchy. Also the methods of the implementation classes can be modified, such as query optimization, resulting in changing the behavior of the system for supporting new operators. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

Active object-oriented database systems are especially useful in the area of nonstandard applications in order to implement an event-driven and constraint-driven system environment. Several approaches exist in literature integrating active concepts into object-oriented databases. For most systems, their knowledge model is based on Event/Condition/Action rules, and their execution model is based on coupling modes, specifying the temporal relationships between rule triggering and condition evaluation, and between condition evaluation and action execution, respectively. The expressive power of coupling modes, however, is insufficient for specifying certain execution semantics required by nonstandard applications. The system TriGS (=Trigger system for GemStoneTM) fills this gap. Instead of exploiting coupling modes TriGS uses an event specification mechanism not only for defining the points in time for rule triggering but also the points in time for condition evaluation and action execution. A first prototype of TriGS implemented in Smalltalk and GemStone on SUN TM workstations is operational. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

In this paper a system for integrated furniture manufacturing is described. The upcoming international standard STEP was adopted to specify the product models. As an integration platform an object-oriented database system is used. The client/server architecture allows simultaneous access to the product data by different CIM tools. Various data access methods are provided by the system. Tools for design, process planning, shop floor control etc. were developed or adopted and communicate with the help of the information system. In this way a continuous information flow is realized which may link together the different sections of a furniture enterprise. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

An object-oriented database system is being developed, which is used to store protein three-dimensional structure data. Proteins from Brookhaven’s Protein Data Bank (PDB) are classified by their enzyme code numbers and each protein is represented as a composite object. The system provides a number of methods to avoid writing lengthy object- SQL (OSQL) statements for complex queries. Furthermore, fixed views are also provided to achieve efficient query processing. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

SPADE is a project carried out at CEFRIEL and Politecnico di Milano. It aims at defining a process modeling language (called SLANG) and a Process-centered Software Engineering Environment (PSEE) based on this language. PSEEs support software activities through the execution of the model of the software process. Such a model integrates the description of human activities and of the interaction between humans and software development tools. Moreover, PSEEs must provide the means to manage and persistently store the artifacts developed within the process. SPADE-1 is an implementation of the SPADE concept. In particular, it includes a SLANG interpreter and facilities to store process artifacts in an object-oriented database (O2), and to interface the process interpreter with an integrated tool environment (DEC FUSE). This paper summarizes the ar-chitectural requirements derived from SPADE and provides a description of the SPADE-1 prototype. © 1994, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

A variety of languages have been proposed for object oriented database systems in order to provide facilities for ad hoc querying. However, in order to model at the conceptual level, an object oriented schema definition language must itself provide facilities for describing the behaviour of data. This paper demonstrates that with only modest extensions, such a schema definition language may serve as a query notation. These extensions are concerned solely with supporting the interactive nature of ad hoc querying, providing facilities for naming and displaying query operations and their results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

This paper proposes two approaches for utilizing multiple feature group and multiple-view information to reduce the number of hypotheses passed to the verification stage in an invariant feature indexing (IFI)-based object recognition system [8]. The first approach is based on a majority voting scheme that tallies the number of consistent votes cast by prototype hypotheses for particular object models. The second approach examines the consistency of estimated object pose from multiple scene-triples from one or more views. Monte Carlo experiments employing several hundred synthetic range images of objects in a large CAD-based 3D object database [7] show that a significant number of hypotheses can be eliminated by using these approaches. The proposed approaches have also been tested on real range images of several objects. A salient feature of our system and experiment design compared to most existing 3D object recognition systems is our use of a large object data base and a large number of test images. © 1994, Springer Verlag. This research complements active object-oriented database management systems by providing a formal, yet conceptually-natural model for complex object construction and destruction. The object Flow Model (OFM), introduced in this paper, assumes an object-oriented database for the rich structural description of objects and for the specification of methods to manipulate objects. The OFM contributes a third component, the object Flow Diagram (OFD), which provides a visual formalism to describe how multiple objects and events can actively invoke processing steps, how objects can become part of progressively more complex objects, and how complex objects can be picked apart. The OFD thus provides an invocation mechanism that is more general than a single message and a processing mechanism that may invoke multiple methods (so long as they apply to either the input or output objects). The development of the OFD was influenced by conceptual modeling languages and discrete event simulation languages and the formal semantics of the OFD is based on work in deductive databases. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

The emphasis in object-oriented databases (OODBs) is on the inheritance, or "is a," type of relationship;yet, many relationships within databases are of the aggregate type—e.g., "is a part of" and "is associated with." While the semantics of the inheritance relationship is directly supported by OODB systems, the semantics of aggregate relationships must often be implemented again and again by application programmers. To address this problem, this paper proposes a notation for describing the semantics of a taxonomy of aggregate relationship types. The notation can be incorporated into an object-Relationship Diagram (ORD) and an object-oriented Database Definition Language (ODDL) to provide enhanced conceptual models for OODB design and improved support of aggregate relationships by an extended OODB system. Such support can significantly ease database applications development and improve the integrity of database operation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

Although object-oriented Database Managemen-t Systems provide a direct mapping between problem domain and the way data are stored, they are not yet as popular as Relational Database Management Systems. Storing objects in a relational database requires fitting them into tables. In this paper, a straightforward methodology for producing a Relational Database schema from an object-oriented Design is presented. The proposed approach provides a solution for mapping all object oriented constructions to tables. The strongest features of the approach are that it yield-s normalized schemata and can be easily automated. Finally, a high-level algorithm and a very simple example to illustrate the approach and its benefits, are given. © 1994 IEEE.
