Index structures are often used to support search operations in large databases. Many advanced database application domains such as spatial databases, multimedia databases, temporal databases, and object-oriented databases, call for index structures that are specially designed and tailored for the domains. Interestingly, in each of these domains, we find methods that are based on one distinct structure - the B-tree. Invented some thirty years ago, the B-tree has been challenged repeatedly, but has retained its competitiveness. In this paper, we first give a quick review of B-trees. We then present its adaptations to various domains. For each domain, we present representative B-tree-based structures and their search operations. We conclude that the B-tree is truly an ubiquitous structure that has stood the test of times with wide acceptance in many domains.

The Digital Technology International Inc. emphasized that it is building its next major release, the Caché object-oriented database platform from InterSystems Corp. This system assigns a unique, descriptive address to every piece of information unlike the traditional relational database which is terribly inefficient in identifying and accessing images, video clips and other media that today's newspapers increasingly must handle. In his research the author is looking into the cooperation of methodology, language, and database in the design of object-oriented systems which are to be realized in an object-oriented programming language using an object-oriented database system (OODBMS). The focus is on some of the differences between traditional object-oriented design and object-oriented database design. For this purpose a small formal model of a contemporary OODBMS is built. This model describes abstractions of the most important data structures of OODBMS and their associated functionality. Based on both a pragmatic and a theoretic understanding of the architecture of contemporary OODBMSs, the author aims at presenting some of the issues to be considered in object-oriented database design such as: object management, object retrieval, and concurrency.< >

A logic-based language for manipulating complex objects constructed using set and tuple constructors is introduced. A key feature of the COL language is the use of base and derived data functions. Under some stratification restrictions, the semantics of programs is given by a minimal and justified model that can be computed using a finite sequence of fixpoints. The language is extended using external functions and predicates. An implementation of COL in a functional language is briefly discussed.

This paper examines the application of object-oriented database management systems to computer-aided control engineering. The system representation models and data types employed by existing contro1 engineering packages for system representation are surveyed. The object classes that are required are derived from this and an object model for system representation is developed. The database management facilities provided by existing control engineering software are minimal, and the facilities required by an integrated working environment are outlined, including model management. The rôle of open systems in definillg and accessing model classes is examined with a view to developing a standardised framework for object-oriented computer-aided control engineering.
