An object-oriented framework Approach to Flexible Availability Management for Developing Distributed Applications

With the success of Internet-based business, there is more and more interest in the availability of systems. Availability indicates that a system continuously provides a useful service at any given time. Failure detection and recovery methods are supported for developing application of availability. Requirement on availability may vary with applications and in addition may change over time. For applications to be independent of the change of availability requirement there should be a flexible and extensible architecture for supporting availability management. This paper presents an availability management framework (AMF), which supports the flexible management of availability for large distributed systems using object-oriented framework technologies. We focus on the AMF's flexibility in order to accommodate changing availability requirements which vary with each application. In addition, this paper describes the result of application of the framework to support availability of RFID systems.

Reusing class-based test cases for testing object-oriented framework interface classes

An application framework provides a reusable design and implementation for a family of software systems. frameworks are introduced to reduce the cost of a product line (i.e., family of products that share the common features) and to increase the maintainability of software products through the deployment of reliable large-scale reusable components. A key challenge with frameworks is the development, evolution and maintenance of test cases to ensure the framework operates appropriately in a given application or product. Reusable test cases increase the maintainability of the software products because an entirely new set of test cases does not have to be generated each time the framework is deployed. At the framework deployment stage, the application developers (i.e., framework users) may need the flexibility to ignore or modify part of the specification used to generate the reusable class-based test cases. This paper addresses how to deal effectively with the different modification forms such that the use of the test cases becomes easy and straightforward in testing the framework interface classes (FICs) developed at the application development stage. Finally, the paper discusses the fault coverage and experimentally examines the specification coverage of the reusable test cases. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Simultaneous untangling and smoothing of quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes using an object-oriented framework

In this work, we present a simultaneous untangling and smoothing technique for quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes. The algorithm iteratively improves a quadrilateral or hexahedral mesh by minimizing an objective function defined in terms of a regularized algebraic distortion measure of the elements. We propose several techniques to improve the robustness and the computational efficiency of the optimization algorithm. In addition, we have adopted an object-oriented paradigm to create a common framework to smooth meshes composed by any type of elements, and using different minimization techniques. Finally, we present several examples to show that the proposed technique obtains valid meshes composed by high-quality quadrilaterals and hexahedra, even when the initial meshes contain a large number of tangled elements. An object-oriented framework for simulation-based green building design optimization with genetic algorithms

Simulation-based optimization can assist green building design by overcoming the drawbacks of trial-and-error with simulation alone. This paper presents an object-oriented framework that addresses many particular characteristics of green building design optimization problems such as hierarchical variables and the coupling with simulation programs. The framework facilitates the reuse of code and can be easily adapted to solve other similar optimization problems. Variable types supported include continuous variables, discrete variables, and structured variables, which act as switches to control a number of sub-level variables. The framework implements genetic algorithms to solve (1) unconstrained and constrained single objective optimization problems, and (2) unconstrained multi-objective optimization problems. The application of this framework is demonstrated through a case study which uses a multi-objective genetic algorithm to explore the trade-off relationship between life-cycle cost and life-cycle environmental impacts for a green building design. Reuse Tool-An extensible tool support for object-oriented framework reuse

object-oriented frameworks have become a popular paradigm used to improve the software development lifecycle. They promote reuse by providing a semi-complete architecture that can be extended through an instantiation process to integrate the needs of the new software application. Instantiation processes are typically enacted in an ad-hoc manner, which may lead to tedious and error-prone procedures. This work leverages our previous work on the definition of RDL, a language to facilitate the description of instantiation process, and describe the ReuseTool, which is an extensible tool to execute RDL programs and assist framework reuse by manipulating UML Diagrams. The ReuseTool integrates a RDL Compiler and a Workflow Engine to control most of the activities required to extend a framework design and, therefore, incorporates application-specific needs. This work also describes how the tool can be extended to incorporate new reuse activities and provides information of its use based on an exploratory Case Study. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. MAQM: a generic object-oriented framework to build quality models for Web-based applications

Software measures play an eminent role in the evaluation of quality of a Web-based application. Increased dependency on Web-based applications enhanced the need to evaluate Web quality parameters. A poor quality Web application fails to fulfill customer's implicit and explicit requirements resulting in poor customer acceptance. Many frameworks have so far been proposed for measurement of quality parameters of Web-based applications but they lack in one way or other. Most of the existing frameworks deal with narrow range of quality characteristics or is limited to a specific Web-based application perspective. Based on the limitations of the current frameworks, this paper proposes a new generic conceptual object-oriented framework multi-attribute quality model which scientifically categorize quality characteristics and its sub-characteristics based on different perspectives and usage of Web applications. The main concept of the newly proposed framework is to analyze and expand the previously established quality characteristics in Web-based applications. The approach is chosen due to the diverse and impulsive nature of the Web applications. For designing the framework ISO/IEC 9126 framework is used as reference.

An object-oriented framework for the development of computer-based guideline implementations

Clinical practice guidelines provide a means of directing medical care towards clinically appropriate and cost-effective interventions. A direct relationship exists between the integration of a guideline into clinical workflow and the effectiveness of the guideline in influencing clinicians' behavior. Computer-based guideline implementations, used at the point-of-care, accomplish this integration. Employing object-oriented technologies, we propose a framework of reusable components for the development of guideline implementation systems. We have identified eight information management services that are common to such systems. Our framework integrates these services and their respective reusable components into clinical workflow to promote the development of comprehensive guideline implementation systems, which should ultimately enhance guideline compliance and the overall quality of care.

This paper presents a new framework for the conceptual analysis of model management. The framework is object-oriented in the sense that it emphasizes the concepts of data abstraction, information hiding and inheritance. It consists of two parts, namely a conceptual structure for the specification of mathematical decision models and a set of high-level manipulation operators over the conceptual structure. The proposed framework helps to reduce redundancy and avoid inconsistency in the conceptual analysis of model management;as well, it provides a blueprint for building an object-oriented model management system.

object-oriented framework is increasingly recognized as an efficient reuse mechanism in software development, but for its intrinsic abstract and complex, it is still difficult to develop for framework designer and instantiate for framework user, this is partly due to the lack of formal framework modeling language guiding the framework developer, user and tool builder. We propose a formal way to model framework in Z so that framework can be modeled in a precise, modular and compositional manner. This approach also supports framework extension and composition. Design patterns are closely related to framework. We unify the modeling of design pattern, framework and their relationship so that design patterns can be referenced by framework smoothly.

It is usually impossible to exactly solve the hard optimization problems. One is thus directed to iterative algorithms. In implementation of these iterative algorithms, some common characteristics can be observed, which can be generalized in an object-oriented framework. This can significantly reduce the time needed for implementation of an iterative algorithm.
