To extend object Petri nets (OPN) for modeling and analyzing complex time critical systems, this paper proposes a high-level Petri net called timed hierarchical object-oriented Petri net (TOPN). In TOPN, a duration is attached to each object accounting for the minimal and maximal amount of time between which that the behavior of the object can be completed once fired. On the other hand, the problem of the state analysis of TOPN models is also addressed, which makes it possible to judge the model consistency at a given moment of time. In particular, a new way is investigated to represent and deal with the objects with temporal knowledge. Finally, the proposed TOPN is used to model and analyze a real decision making module in one cooperative multiple robot system to demonstrate its effectiveness.

The paper presents two novel conceptual metrics for measuring coupling and cohesion in software systems. Our first metric, Conceptual Coupling between object classes (CCBO), is based on the well-known CBO coupling metric, while the other metric, Conceptual Lack of Cohesion on methods (CLCOM5), is based on the LCOM5 cohesion metric. One advantage of the proposed conceptual metrics is that they can be computed in a simpler (and in many cases, programming language independent) way as compared to some of the structural metrics. We empirically studied CCBO and CLCOM5 for predicting fault-proneness of classes in a large open-source system and compared these metrics with a host of existing structural and conceptual metrics for the same task. As the result, we found that the proposed conceptual metrics, when used in conjunction, can predict bugs nearly as precisely as the 58 structural metrics available in the Columbus source code quality framework and can be effectively combined with these metrics to improve bug prediction.

object-orientation is one of the essential parts of every software engineering course. However, according to literature, it often lacks the following: First, modeling on a conceptual level independent from a particular programming language is often neglected. Moreover, the actual process of designing or implementing a piece of software seems to be less important than providing an optimal solution. Finally, students often follow the slides of the teacher passively without thinking about or even questioning the material. But, in order to actively apply a proper form of object-orientation, it is essential that one understands the concepts of this programming paradigm and is able to deal with problems and communicate ideas rather than handling a specific programming language. In this paper we introduce CREWSpace-a tool for co-located collaboration that implements a digital version of the CRC method. To this end, students actively participate in so called CRC sessions, which fosters communication and problem solving skills. In particular, they design a software system on a conceptual level and use our tool to analyze and adjust the proposed design through role play. Moreover, CREWSpace records these analyses for a later replay such that the students are able to reflect on their decisions.

Development of a system is complex, requiring a well-structured process to manage the range of tasks involved and their work products. There are many models and processes available for structured development, including the well-known Waterfall and Agile models. Recent standards for safety-critical system development utilise the V-model, such as the process given in the ISO 26262 standard for functional safety of road vehicles. However, the process clashes with the commonly-expressed desire for greater reuse of development artifacts in robotics. We have experimented with applying a process, the object-oriented Systems Engineering Method, to the design of a robotic wheelchair. This paper describes our application of the process to a safety-critical robot, as well as our use of SysML for managing design information and ZipC for code generation and verification. We discuss our experiences, both good and bad, in order to inform other robot developers of what to consider when choosing a process and tools.

A wide variety of software metrics have been proposed and a broad range of tools is available to measure them. However, the effective use of software metrics is hindered by the lack of meaningful thresholds. Thresholds have been proposed for a few metrics only, mostly based on expert opinion and a small number of observations. Previously proposed methodologies for systematically deriving metric thresholds have made unjustified assumptions about the statistical properties of source code metrics. As a result, the general applicability of the derived thresholds is jeopardized. We designed a method that determines metric thresholds empirically from measurement data. The measurement data for different software systems are pooled and aggregated after which thresholds are selected that (i) bring out the metric's variability between systems and (ii) help focus on a reasonable percentage of the source code volume. Our method respects the distributions and scales of source code metrics, and it is resilient against outliers in metric values or system size. We applied our method to a benchmark of 100 object-oriented software systems, both proprietary and open-source, to derive thresholds for metrics included in the SIG maintainability model.

Traditional pixel-based classification methods yield poor results when applied to SAR imagery because of the presence of speckle and limited information in backscatter coefficients. A novel classification method, integrating polarimetric target decomposition, object-oriented image analysis, and decision tree algorithms, is proposed for the classification of polarimetric SAR data (PolSAR). The polarimetric target decomposition is aimed at extracting physical information related to the scattering mechanism of targets for the classification of scattering data. The main purposes of the object-oriented image analysis are delineating objects and extracting various spatial and textural features. The decision tree algorithm provides an efficient way to select features and create a decision tree for the classification. A comparison between the proposed method and the Wishart supervised classification was made. The overall accuracies of these two methods were 89.34% and 79.36%, respectively. The results show that the proposed method is an effective method for the classification of PolSAR data.

Trying to provide empirical evidence for this assumption, we investigate if there are any correlations between the usage of partially polymorphic calls in classes and their change and defect likelihood. Formal object-oriented software development with Fox

We present a new method, called Fox, which aims at the formal development of sequential, object-oriented software systems. Fox is a synergetic combination of the semi-formal Fusion method and the formal specification language object-Z. To manage complexity and to foster separation of concerns, Fox distinguishes between analysis and design. In each phase structure and behaviour specifications are developed step-by-step. The specifications may be graphical or textual. We give proof obligations to guarantee that the developed models are formally consistent and complete, and that the resulting system conforms to the original specification. By walking through a simple example - a graph editor - we illustrate the application of Fox.

Plagiarism detection in software programs is very important in both academia and industry. There are many tools available today to aid in detecting plagiarism in text and source documents. Most of the plagiarism detection tools for source code do some sort of pre-processing, like removing comments & blank spaces and using uniform tokens for primitive types & variables, before actually applying intelligent matching techniques so that the tool can detect the copied code even if it is changed in format and variable names etc. In this paper, we propose a novel preprocessing approach based on design patterns such that any code that is intelligently plagiarized can also be easily located.
