A 3D Approach for the Virtual Commissioning of Processing Plants

This paper presents a novel 3D approach for virtual commissioning (VC) in process engineering, utilizing a semi-automated model generation methodology based on 3D MCAD data. Current VC practices primarily benefit larger manufacturing systems due to the complexity and time-intensive nature of model generation, which poses challenges for broader adoption, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. Our approach addresses this by proposing a 3D simulation model architecture that integrates physics-based simulation environments, enabling efficient and accurate generation of dynamic simulation models. By leveraging a physics engine, the proposed method automatically derives essential parameters and system topology, thereby significantly reducing the manual modeling effort. The simulation model is designed to depict complex fluid and material flows within a 3D environment, facilitating realistic, real-time interaction and improved visualization for VC. This paper further evaluates the method's accuracy through a representative case study involving a liquid food processing setup, demonstrating high fidelity in dynamic behavior and alignment with physical processes. The results indicate that this approach offers substantial potential for improving virtual engineering and commissioning workflows, enhancing simulation model fidelity, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in process plant development. This development promises an adaptable, user-friendly tool that can advance the integration of VC in diverse engineering fields, particularly where hybrid production processes intersect.

object-oriented modeling is spreading in current simulation environments through the use of the individual components of the model and its interconnections to define the underlying dynamic equations. In this paper we describe the use of the SIMSCAPE simulation environment in the object-oriented modeling of the short-term arterial pressure control system when is applied to patients undergoing different situations as hemorrhage, liquid uptake or hemodialysis treatment. Results show the effectiveness of the baroreceptor control mechanism to compensate for the hypotension induced by the hemodialysis treatment. The described approach represents a valuable tool in the teaching of physiology for graduate medical and biomedical engineering students when facing to alternate hemodialysis treatment.

Distributed control systems (DCS) come into wide use in automation areas. In this paper, an object-oriented design pattern approach for modeling, simulation and implementation of the DCS is proposed. The proposed design patterns enable the uniform modeling of the static structures and dynamic behaviors of the DCS, the transformation of the models into simulation program, and the generation of the embedded codes. The Java-based modeler and simulator, and code generator were developed based on these patterns. Applications to the building automation and factory automation systems proved its effectiveness.

Bi-relational P/T Petri nets are the newly introduced class of Petri nets, whose implementation and definitions are the main topics of this paper;they feature certain new and original concepts when compared with conventional P/T Petri nets, which can be successfully used at a design. modeling and verification of multithreading object-oriented programming systems executing in parallel or distributed environment. In this paper basic characteristics of hi-relational P/T Petri nets are very briefly presented including possibilities in their definition of newly introduced net static pages and dynamic pages. net dynamic pages instances and their possible dynamic creation and destruction, functionalities of multiarcs and the mechanism of the execution of transitions at the modeling of object-oriented programming systems. The concept of subpages of net pages and its application in the modeling of the declared static and non-static variables and methods including the class inheritance and polymorphism, is also of an interest. Basic principles of bi-relational P/T Petri nets could be then further applied when defining the hi-relational object Petri Nets.

In designing an enterprise wide system, a system architect must consider different concerns of the stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a generic metadata approach for modeling data with multi structure representations derived from different points of view of the stakeholders. The notion of structures/organizational views of data is separated from the collection of the data itself. We introduce two layers of the generic metamodel: (1) dataset: real data handled as a collection;(2) viewpoint: a more abstract layer describing the many structures/metadata for each point of view. The idea of datasets and viewpoints are adopted from the concepts of abstract and concrete class in object oriented modeling. To validate the generic model, we provide several case studies. We expect the proposed model provides a better architectural way of thinking in modeling an enterprise.

DYMOLA (Dynamic modeling Laboratory) is a very versatile PC-based object-oriented software that can be effectively used in power electronics education and research. It is capable of detecting state transitions that occur in power electronic systems thereby eliminating convergence issues. object-oriented modeling capability of DYMOLA makes modeling very easy. Decoupled modeling and simulation is supported. Simulator such as SABER, PSPICE have built-in analysis tools. Other simulators such as DYMOLA-ACSL, Matlab-Simulink need user-created software to do the job. However, these toots work off-line, which is a disadvantage. The features of DYMOLA can be exploited to develop on-line and effective measurement tools. In this paper, such on-line tools have been proposed.

In this work, a lumped-parameter Windkessel model of the cardiovascular system that simulates biomechanical parameters of the human physiology is presented. The object-oriented platform provided by the MATLAB-based modeling environment SIMSCAPE is employed to compute blood pressures and flows in each heart chamber and at various sites of the vascular tree. The hydraulic domain allows the determination of cardiovascular hemodynamics intuitively from geometrical and mechanical properties of the system, while custom elements model the pumping action of the heart and the effects of respiration on blood flow. The model is validated by comparing predicted hemodynamics with normal physiology during both systole and diastole, demonstrating that changes in arterial pressures with breathing are consistent with reported physiological effects of cardiorespiratory coupling. The capabilities of this platform are explored through two exemplary case studies: i) pressure-overload heart failure due to aortic constriction, validated in vitro and via finite element analysis, and ii) single-ventricle Fontan physiology, validated in vitro and compared with the clinical literature. This platform provides a practical tool for the calculation of cardiovascular hemodynamics from hydraulic parameters, enabling the intuitive creation of in silico representations of complex circulatory loops, the planning and optimization of medical interventions, and the prediction of clinically relevant patient-specific hemodynamics.

This paper introduces an extension of the object-oriented paradigm for the development of Embedded Systems, called process-orientation. From the analysis of the problems encountered with state-of-the-art development methods for embedded systems, it becomes obvious that many difficulties are caused by the absence of good behavior models and the resulting intermingling of different design dimensions. It is shown that these problems can be solved by the explicit modeling of dynamic system aspects like behavior, real-time and dependability constraints. This is done by means of so called activities that provide a convenient description of the global behavior of a system and that can be annotated by dynamic constraints. In order to demonstrate this approach, the mapping of activities to colored Petri nets is discussed, This Petri net representation creates an additional access layer of the object architecture, corresponding to a meta-level object control layer.

object-oriented Business Process modeling: A Case Study of a Port Authority

Companies need to change the way they organize and conduct their business in order to cope with the volatile business environment. Changes can be done through redesigning the business processes to achieve dramatic improvement in terms of quality, speed, and cost of products/services offered to customers. The objective of the study is to investigate the usefulness of an object-oriented method for modeling business process redesign. This case study applies the concept of business process improvement using an integrated object-oriented approach. Two core business processes of the Port Authority of one country in the Asia-Pacific region selected for the application of this concept are: Customer Cargo Clearance and Customer Cargo Handling. An object-oriented notation combined with workflow methodology is developed for modeling the selected processes on an "AS-IS" basis. Then the redesign of the desired processes was performed and re-modeled to represent the "TO-BE" processes. This redesign was intended to lead to significant improvement in terms of decreasing process duration, eliminating redundant activities, and/or reducing manual tasks. The experience so gained at the Port Authority is transferable to other organizations considering similar business process improvement.

MAXIMIZING LEVERAGE FROM AN object DATABASE

With increasing frequency, object database management systems (ODBMSs) are being used as a persistent storage framework for applications. This paper shows that ODBMS frameworks provide a natural repository for supporting object-oriented systems, because they store and manage objects as their atomic units. In addition, these frameworks can offer a great deal of leverage to the developers of applications with the integration of two distinct paradigm shifts: the object-oriented development model, and the direct-reference storage model. Software developers who understand the implications of both paradigm shifts are more likely to use the technology effectively and realize most or all of the potential leverage. Highlighted is objectStore(TM) from object Design, Inc., which is available as part of the IBM object database solution.
