The paper describes modelling and simulation of Electric Are Furnace (EAF) melting shop. This is a batch process and can be classified as a hybrid system in which discrete events such as material transportation operations and sequencing of the power supply to the furnace are combined with the continuous time melting of steel. The continuous part of the system is described by a non-linear dynamic model. The discrete event part of the system is described by decision rules. The objectoriented approach to the task of building the simulation model is outlined and the specific requirements for the EAF melt shop problem are determined. Examples of using the simulation for solving problems in managing the furnace melt shop are presented.

The article describes usage of simulation for designing and/or controlling of production and logistic systems. The proposed simulation method caned reflective simulation is useful for simulation experiments of either the systems dependent on some human factor or the systems managed by some central computer. The implementation of this method in Simula and Java programming languages will be discussed. A new version of Simula compiler for 32-bit Microsoft Windows will be shortly introduced.

Advanced life support systems will support human lives during space journeys. Plants will provide food, consume CO 2 , produce O 2 , and clean water within the enclosed systems. Computer models were developed for the purpose of analyzing effects of crop production schemes on food supply and resource requirements and for controlling plant growth and development. An object-oriented approach was used to develop a top-level model for crop production scheme analysis. Another approach developed controlled environment crop growth and development models by modifying open field crop models for formulating model-based control algorithms. This paper presents an overview of these two different approaches.

Planning and controlling of routing of intermodal transportation (e.g. continent-wide in Europe) has to consider heterogeneous restrictions prescribed by the ordering company or institution, by the involved carriers, unloaders, warehouses, authorities or receivers of the complete logistic chain. This often implies cascaded queries to and transactions through heterogeneous and geographically disclosed data bases in different countries. The logical consistency of these transactions is based on the constraint propagation and satisfaction along their implementation. An object-oriented approach for, is the concept of Aspect-orientedprogramming to inherit interfaces between objects (or object classes) through the whole transaction. This new concept is adapted to heterogeneous traffic data bases in routing tasks.

Symbolic approaches to assist in the development of finite element formulations have been used since the late 1970s. Today, the symbolic mathematical software such as Mathematica, Maple, etc., has proved to be helpful when testing formulations. In earlier work, the authors introduced a new way of integrating naturally symbolic concepts in numerical finite element codes, taking advantage of an object-oriented code organization. In this paper, we wish to prove on practical examples that the proposed approach is very attractive and promising today, lending to an alternative,way of conceiving finite element,rent codes. After presenting a state-of-the-art of symbolic approaches for finite element developments, we first give a practical application of symbolic developments (for discontinuous space-time formulations), and then examples of Computer Aided Software Engineering tools that can be introduced into such a finite element environment.

For some time now, NGC has been developing on-line transient stability analysis tools. A particular need is the development of a facility that will help in the monitoring of intertrip schemes. This paper, therefore, describes the features of the General Intertrip Monitoring System (GIMS) facility developed for the NGC system and currently running on-line at the National Control Centre. The paper also demonstrates the operational experience in using this tool.
