A critical issue for complex component-based systems design is the modeling and analysis of architecture. Architectural specifications of software systems show them as a collection of interrelated components, and constitute what has been called the software architecture level of software design. It is at this level where the description and verification of structural properties of the system are naturally addressed. Besides, the use of explicit descriptions of the architecture of software systems enhances system comprehension and promotes software reuse. We have developed a tool-the Web-Based Software Architecture Prototyping System (SAPS)-in a distributed environment to meet the requirements of integrating software components into heterogeneous networks. Our system architecture design environment includes a Web-based Software Architecture Editor, the Java Code Generator (JCG), a Reusable Assets Repository (RAR), and a Platform Distribution Controller (PDC). By using the wrapper/glue technique, different simulation tools in a heterogeneous environment share the input/output data files for prototypes. The architecture is generalized for the communication among software components necessary for data interchange. Our system not only provides a useful array of tools for distributed real-time system prototyping, but also is a demonstration of the effective use of a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment.

Learning how to design and implement a program is hard. Teaching methods and textbooks on Java programming often treat a new subject in terms of syntax and examples. Little attention is paid to systematically designing programs with these new concepts. Research has shown that such a complex task requires not only conceptual knowledge, but also explicit procedural *** this paper, we investigate the effect of combining conceptual and procedural guidance to teaching and learning concurrent programming. We build on earlier research in which we have introduced such a structured design methodology which divides the development of multi-threaded Java programs into a sequence of explicit, manageable steps: the Steps *** present our experiences with applying the Steps Plan in an introductory course on object-oriented programming, with multithreading. The main questions addressed are: "What problems did the students encounter in direct relation to the Steps Plan?", and "What general problems surfaced?"As to the first question, two important issues were that using a relatively far developed sequential solution as a stepping stone towards a multi-threaded solution wrong-footed some students, and that remedying race condition situations turned out to be supported at a too high level of *** to the second question, two notable issues were that deciding on the right amount and type of concurrency by themselves is maybe too difficult for students at this level, and that the notion of (establishing) correctness or quality of a solution is, different from the sequential case, not intuitively clear to *** these issues, the paper recommends remedies and indicates directions for future work. We discuss the consequences for education as regards teaching materials and forms of teaching.

This paper reports on an effort to develop an integrated set of diagrammatic languages for modeling object-oriented systems, and to construct a supporting tool. The goal is for models to be intuitive and well-structured, yet fully executable and analyzable, enabling automatic synthesis of usable and efficient code in object-oriented languages such as C++. At the heart of the modeling method is the language of statecharts for specifying object behavior, and a hierarchical OMT-like language for describing the structure of classes and their inter-relationships, that we call O-charts. objects can interact by event generation, or by direct invocation of operations. In the interest of keeping the exposition manageable, we leave out some technically involved topics, such as multiple-thread concurrency and active objects.

Phenomenography is a well-known empirical research approach that is often used to investigate students' ways of learning programming. Phenomenographic pedagogy is an instructional approach to plan learning and teaching activities. This theoretical paper gives an overview of prior research in phenomenographic studies of programming and shows how the results from these research studies can be applied to course design. Pedagogic principles grounded in the phenomenographic perspective on teaching and learning are then presented that consider how to tie students' experiences to the course goals (relevance structure) and how to apply variation theory to focus on the desired critical aspects of learning. Building on this, an introductory object-oriented programming course is described as an example of research-based course design. The insights gained from the experience of running the course are shared with the community of computer science educators, as also the benefits and responsibilities for those who wish to adopt the phenomenographic perspective on learning to plan their teaching. The development of an increased awareness of the variation in students' ways of experiencing programming and the need to broaden the context of the programming course are discussed.

A flexible and easy to use molecular biology workbench efficiently developed in Tcl/Tk

We describe the design and implementation of a workbench for molecular biology that allows the easy integration of analysis tools. The software is implemented in Tcl/Tk using the [incr Tcl] extension that provides object-oriented programming. The program is called tkGDE and consists of four main parts. The sequence editor allows the user to perform basic editing operations on biomolecule sequences, The graphical annotation editor gives the user a graphical overview of all annotated features of a sequence. The output manager retains information on the results produced by the analysis tools, The bundle control allows several tools to run automatically, passing data from one tool to the next, Tools are integrated into the system by describing their properties in a configuration file, which drastically reduces the time needed for integration. We present results proving that Tcl/Tk has been misjudged to be slow and unsuited for large projects, To achieve sufficient performance we exploited special features of Tcl/Tk, namely idle tasks and the capabilities built into the Tk canvas widget. The system consists of more than 34 000 lines of [incr Tcl] code in 182 classes. The whole development process took about one person-year. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In order to solve the problem of modeling, deduction and measurement of operational concepts, a method of modeling and measurement of operational concepts based on Joint Mission Thread (JMT) and Activity-Based Method (ABM) is proposed. Combining the actual situation of our country and its own characteristics, according to the characteristics of ABM and JMT, the operational concepts are modeled. Through model deduction based on OPM (object-Process Methodology), the function and logic of the operational concepts are tested. Combining with JMT, the operational concepts are decomposed into indicators to realize the measurability of the operational concepts. This method can provide reference for the normative description, modeling, testing and index decomposition of operational concepts.

Simulations offer an engaging way to learn about decomposition of complex systems. Here I describe a project where the goal is to build a simulation of an ant colony consisting of five different ant behaviors in a 2D environment. Students design and build their simulations with no code provided except for the required GUI. Design issues include choice of appropriate data structures; traversal issues; and using inheritance to model ant behaviors. Students also learn about emergence, as characterized by the development of organized foraging trails by ants that respond only to their immediate surroundings. The visualization requirement enables students to quickly determine whether or not requirements have been met, and provides a way to rapidly grade a moderately large and complex assignment.

In object-oriented programming languages, objects with polymorphic attributes can negatively impact performance and hinder static analysis. These attributes require dynamic dispatch, which is slower than static binding, and complicate the analysis process. We propose a novel algorithm for object specialization that addresses this issue by replacing polymorphic attributes with monomorphic ones, resulting in improved performance and simplified static analysis. Our algorithm is a new approach compared to existing function specialization algorithms. We provide a proof of the algorithm’s soundness and correctness, and present an implementation of the algorithm as a software tool. Empirical evaluation shows that our approach achieves significant improvements in performance and simplifies the static analysis process. Our algorithm can be applied to a variety of object-oriented languages such as Java and Python.
