Modern internet and web applications rely on interactions among remote host computers connected by heterogeneous networks (different LANs, gateways, WANs, MANs, etc.). simulation modelling such networks is of great importance to the web application designer to predict, at design time, performance metrics such as the end-to-end delay between hosts, which is dramatically increased by the various mechanisms necessary to deal with heterogeneity (protocol conversion, packet fragmentation and re-assembly, flow control, etc.). On the other hand, producing a simulation model of web interactions is a non-trivial task because of the great importance of the software aspects. It is thus necessary to provide general model production guidelines which can be then tailored and applied to specific simulation languages or packages. This paper gives such general production guidelines with an example application to the production of simulation models for web interaction paradigms of client-server and mobile agent types. An example use of the models is also introduced to predict the most convenient paradigm and the best choice of the host capacities for each given network configuration. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. We develop an object-oriented simulation that models the airdrop mission of a U.S. transport aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III. The simulation, written in MODSIM III, is based on three basic object types: an aircraft, a wake vortex, and a paratrooper. The aircraft object provides the required aerodynamic constants for simulating the wake vortices generated off each wingtip;the vortex object includes velocity field and decay models as well as a position algorithm;and the paratrooper object implements a 6-degree-of-freedom trajectory model. Using the simulation, we generate vortex encounter information for various formations and wind conditions, and quantify the associated risk of paratrooper/vortex encounters in a potential encounter rate. Time over the drop zone is a primary concern in any airdrop operation, and the results of this analysis form a tool that allows the ground commander to assess the risk involved in decreasing that time.

Analysing the effects of Lean manufacturing using a value stream mapping-based simulation generator

Value stream mapping (VSM) has become a popular implementation method for Lean manufacturing in recent years. However, its limitations such as being time-consuming, its inability to detail dynamic behaviour of production processes and to encompass their complexity, have spurred us to turn to simulation. This paper introduces two new elements to the value stream mapping method. First, it describes how the value stream mapping paradigm (VSMP) can be adapted for use in simulation, introducing specially designed VSM objects. Secondly, based on the VSMP and these objects, it presents a formal modelling method and its related database structure, that drives a generator which automatically yields a simulation model of the value stream map. In this way, a model generator, using the set of objects and the model database, can generate simulation models of Current and Future VSM scenarios quickly and automatically. Additionally, algorithms for converting raw ERP data and information from a VSM drawing into tables of the structured database are developed. Finally, the formal modelling method is applied to a real company case. A Current State model of the manufacturing system and three scenarios of Future States are generated to see the effects of Lean when transforming part of the system from push to pull.

Reconfigurable simulator using graphical user interface (GUI) and object-oriented design for OFDM systems

In this paper, a design of a new object-oriented simulation environment and graphical user interface (GUI) for versatile orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is presented. This is achieved using high-level design, parallelism and usability for the simulation environment. GUI interface can serve as a learning/research tool for students or practiced professionals to investigate particular designs. It is evident that OFDM systems intended to be used in dynamic environments must be tested under various conditions in order to be designed for optimality. Hence, a simulation design is proposed coupling the GUI, parallelism, and high-level object-oriented design techniques to be beneficial to the researcher. A high-level design and GUI layouts of the proposed simulator is shown in details. Important OFDM parameters needed for reconfiguration of transmitter components, channel condition parameters, and receiver components are discussed. In addition, this paper provides a simple technique to implement simulation partitioning for increased parallel performance of reconfigurable object-oriented OFDM simulators. This simple technique applies to scenarios where there is disproportionate simulation duration between different OFDM configurations. It is shown to decrease total simulation time considerably. OpenSim: A flexible distributed neural network simulator with automatic interactive graphics

An object-oriented simulator called OpenSim is presented that achieves a high degree of flexibility by relying on a small set of building blocks. The state variables and algorithms put in this framework can easily be accessed through a command shell. This allows one to distribute a large-scale simulation over several workstations and to generate the interactive graphics automatically. OpenSim opens new possibilities for cooperation among Neural Network researchers. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The attainment of a lean engineering organization is the critical requirement for ensuring a return on investment in intelligent manufacturing. Achieving this is based on measuring the effects of flexibility, and on the capability of exploiting the resources' adaptability by combined control and management of the product and production processes. This objective needs extended experimentation of the actual behaviour of the manufacturing facilities. This paper introduces the opportunities offered by the availability of a prototypical implementation that joins a simple pilot plant to a computer simulator.

Application of the CAMEL process simulator to the dynamic simulation of gas turbines

This work presents the development of a modular code for the dynamic simulation of a single-shaft gas turbine and an application to a 50 kW machine. The simulation package, CAMEL (R), is a modular object-oriented process simulator for energy conversion systems, conceived and developed in the last decade by the Authors' group at the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department of the University of Roma 1 "La Sapienza", the advantages of an object-oriented approach being the flexibility and the user-friendly interface. The component library of the original (steady-state) code has been augmented by implementing the dynamic models of all of the gas-turbine components: the method is still based on a classical black-box modelling and each component can be assembled as in an engineering process scheme in which the connections between two elements represent either a mechanical power coupling or a working fluid stream. In order to obtain an accurate description of the gas-turbine phenomenology, each component is described by a non/linear set of both algebraic and first-order differential-equations. The global non-linear system is advanced in time by means of a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The paper provides a description of the mathematical model adopted for the simulation. A complete dynamic simulation of a 50 kW gas-turbine plant is performed, starting from steady-state operation. Both variable and fixed rotational velocity are considered. The program has been tested both in a steady-state off-design simulation and in a fully dynamic simulation. In all tests the code performed properly, reproducing with good accuracy the behaviour of the real gas turbine. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper shows how the Prosit system, a new C + +-based framework for both sequential and distributed discrete event simulation, developed at INRIA-Sophia-Antipolis, makes an easy and efficient integration of classical discrete event simulation and of new high speed simulation techniques based on evolution equations possible. This demonstrates in particular the feasibility of distributed simulations involving simulators of different nature. Important applications of these techniques may be found in the simulation of communication switches, as illustrated in an example.

A simulation modeling framework for multiple-aisle automated storage and retrieval systems

This paper presents a simulation model framework for unit-load automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) able to cope with most of the features found in industrial settings like, for example, multiple aisles, non aisle-captive cranes or double-deep unit-load AS/RS. Although these features characterize most of the industrial applications, they have been simply neglected by most of the previously published research oriented papers, which explains at least partially the low impact of the research output in practice. To help mitigating this drawback, this paper first presents an up-to-date chronological literature survey, which includes works that use any form of simulation in the modeling process. It then proposes an object-oriented simulation Model for unit-load AS/RS developed with a purely generic mindset. In this model, the physical design decisions are separated from the operational decisions, which makes it possible, first, to obtain a better understanding of AS/RS dynamics and, second, to increase the model's flexibility and generality, thus allowing many interesting scenarios to be represented. In particular, the simulation modeling framework has been used to develop a simulator and to conduct a preliminary study on a multi-aisle AS/RS.

Shared virtual worlds for education: The ExploreNet experiment

ExploreNet is an experimental environment for creating and delivering networked ''virtual worlds.'' This system's style of user interaction was inspired by the concept of a ''habitat'' as first articulated in the LucasFilm's Habitat system. Players enter and interact in a habitat via their animated alter egos, called ''avatars.'' Habitats may be created for many purposes, including social interaction, entertainment and education. Our focus has been to facilitate the creation of habitats in which virtual communities of learners and mentors interact. This paper presents details of the current ExploreNet system, including its user interface, the means it provides for creating complex behaviors, details of its implementation, the outcomes of several experiments using this system, and our plans for its natural migration to a World Wide Web-based system.
