The object-oriented software package OOQP for solving convex quadratic programming problems (QP) is described. The primal-dual interior point algorithms supplied by OOQP are implemented in a way that is largely independent of the problem structure. Users may exploit problem structure by supplying linear algebra, problem data, and variable classes that are customized to their particular applications. The OOQP distribution contains default implementations that solve several important QP problem types, including general sparse and dense QPs, bound-constrained QPs, and QPs arising from support vector machines and Huber regression. The implementations supplied with the OOQP distribution are based on such well known linear algebra packages as MA27/57, LAPACK, and PETSc. OOQP demonstrates the usefulness of object-oriented design in optimization software development, and establishes standards that can be followed in the design of software packages for other classes of optimization problems. A number of the classes in OOQP may also be reusable directly in other codes.

Techniques for modelling growth and tree size-class distributions of forest stands have been developed and implemented in an object-oriented program with C++. The object-oriented concept represents high-level abstraction of physical objects in forests and in objects emanating from the data abstraction used for numerical computations of growth. The objects in this forestry context represent relationships of the pines, weeds and site factors and their interactions in a stand, and also use the computational objects. The objects mainly comprise the computations for modelling growth and size-class distribution of tree crops. The percentile interval, a technique derived from the geometry of the interval and its percentile of tree size-class distribution, is used here for modelling tree crops, and the interval with a fixed percentile could be projected over time. This technique could also be used for reconstruction of the distribution to characterize the effects of thinning. The projection of a distribution involves modelling with the initial growth and the long-term changes in tree crops. Initial and later growth could be joined using the algorithm which was derived from an approximation of the linear phase of the cumulative growth function. Experience so far with and future plans for implementation of the development work for prediction of forest stands with object-oriented software are also presented.

The economic implication of the maintenance phase of software development process can be managed by using software metrics to build-in maintainability quality into software products. Several software quality models and maintainability measurement models/methods have been proposed in the literatures;still the evaluation of object-oriented software (OOS) maintainability has not attained uniformity and consistency in measurement results. This paper reviews existing studies in OOS maintainability measurement within the past decade. Results show that elements of subjectivity in the measurement methods threaten the attainment of uniformity, consistency and potential wide acceptability of the identified models in this review.

This paper describes an object-oriented software system that can be used to predict the spectral performance of optical networks. The system can be used by the planners and designers of such networks to assess the spectral performance of existing or proposed optical networks. The software package combines the theoretical models developed in the course of a research programme with experimental data obtained from the devices used in the UK field trials of fibre in the local access network. Using this package, a planner or designer is able to construct networks on actual location maps and then obtain forward and return loss spectral characteristics on any paths throughout the network. Since the development of the system is based on object oriented technology, it is future-proofed to the extent that any changes in the technology of the local access network can readily be incorporated into the existing modelling process. © 1995 SPIE.

Package Coupling Measurement in object-oriented software

The grouping of correlated classes into a package helps in better organization of modern object-oriented software. The quality of such packages needs to be measured so as to estimate their utilization. In this paper, new package coupling metrics are proposed, which also take into consideration the hierarchical structure of packages and direction of connections among package elements. The proposed measures have been validated theoretically as well as empirically using 18 packages taken from two open source software systems. The results obtained from this study show strong correlation between package coupling and understandability of the package which suggests that proposed metrics could be further used to represent other external software quality factors.

Component Dependency in object-oriented software

Component dependency is an important software measure. It is directly related to software understandability, maintainability, and reusability. Two important parameters in describing component dependency are the type of coupling between two components and the type of the dependent component. Depending upon the different types of coupling and the type of the dependent components, there can be different effects on component maintenance and component reuse. In this paper, we divide dependent components into three types. We then classify various component dependencies and analyze their effects on maintenance and reuse. Based on the classification, we present a dependency metric and validate it on 11 open-source Java components. Our study shows that a strong correlation exists between the measurement of the dependency of the component and the effort to reuse the component. This indicates that the classification of component dependency and the suggested metric could be further used to represent other external software quality factors.

Predicting the fault-proneness of class hierarchy in object-oriented software using a layered kernel

A novel kernel learning method for object-oriented （00） software fault prediction is proposed in this paper. With this method, each set of classes that has inheritance relation named class hierarchy, is treated as an elemental software model. A layered kernel is introduced to handle the tree data structure corresponding to the class hierarchy models. This method was vali- dated using both an artificial dataset and a case of industrial software from the optical communication field. Preliminary experi- ments showed that our approach is very effective in learning structured data and outperforms the traditional support vector learning methods in accurately and correctly predicting the fault-prone class hierarchy model in real-life OO software.

Integrating Evolutionary Testing with Reinforcement Learning for Automated Test Generation of object-oriented software

Recent advances in evolutionary test generation greatly facilitate the testing of object-oriented(OO) software. Existing test generation approaches are still limited when the software under test(SUT) includes Inherited class hierarchies(ICH) and Non-public methods(NPM). This paper presents an approach to generate test cases for OO software via integrating evolutionary testing with reinforcement learning. For OO software with ICH and NPM, two kinds of particular isomorphous substitution actions are presented and a Q-value matrix is maintained to assist the evolutionary test generation. A prototype called Evo Q is developed based on this approach and is applied to generate test cases for actual Java *** results show that Evo Q can efficiently generate test cases for SUT with ICH and NPM and achieves higher branch coverage than two state-of-the-art test generation approaches within the same time budget.

One of the important activities of the maintenance phase is to understand the source-code first, and then change it. Understandability of the software gets affected by psychological complexity of the source-code and cognitive abilities are needed to understand it. The correlation between the orientation and location of various entities with their processing needs to be established by the programmers, which requires spatial abilities. These spatial abilities play an important role in object-oriented software, in which the use of data as well as the methods of the class needs to be understood in a combined way. This paper presents two measures of spatial complexity of object-oriented software, which are based on definition and usage of classes and objects. The values of proposed measures get affected suitably because of inheritance and polymorphism as well, due to change in the distances. The significance of object-oriented spatial complexity has been demonstrated with the help of 15 object-oriented projects of varied length and results have been validated with the help of reverse engineering data and perfective maintenance data. Finding an effective method for testing object-oriented software (OOS) has proven elusive in the software community due to the rapid development of object-oriented programming (OOP) technology. Although significant progress has been made by previous studies, challenges still exist in relation to the object distance measurement of OOS using Adaptive Random Testing (ART). This is partly due to the unique features of OOS such as encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism. In a previous work, we proposed a new similarity metric called the object and Method Invocation Sequence Similarity (OMISS) metric to facilitate multi-class level testing using ART. In this paper, we broaden the set of models in the metric (OMISS) by considering the method parameter and adding the weight in the metric to develop a new distance metric to improve unit testing of OOS. We used the new distance metric to calculate the distance between the set of objects and the distance between the method sequences of the test cases. Additionally, we integrate the new metric in unit testing with ART and applied it to six open source subject programs. The experimental result shows that the proposed method with method parameter considered in this study is better than previous methods without the method parameter in the case of the single method. Our finding further shows that the proposed unit testing approach is a promising direction for assisting software engineers who seek to improve the failure-detection effectiveness of OOS testing.
