The development of automatic object-oriented software testing tools is a challenging and realistic subject in the field of software engineering. A testing prototype system named ARTCovPS (Adaptive Random Testing Coverage-based testing Prototype System) is designed and implemented for the widely used object-oriented method software. ARTCovPS mainly performs automated testing from two aspects, dynamic test case generation of object-oriented software based on coverage and adaptive random testing method based on coverage. To a certain extent, ARTCovPS testing prototype system realizes the software test automation, and the system has a high running efficiency and can automatically run different comparison methods. The experimental results are satisfactory, and the feasibility of the system is also verified.

object oriented (OO). Within the context of OO, there are a lot of interactions among different objects that result in many communication activities. Besides the feed-forward communication activities, many bypassing activities are generated in the pipeline structure. In this paper, we present a performance model that analyzes and evaluates the execution and communication times of OO software that runs on pipeline architecture. The model realizes both the feed-forward and the bypassing communication. We utilize the model to restructure the target software to achieve better performance. The restructuring algorithm has two phases;the first phase is concerned with maximizing the throughput. The second phase aims to minimize the latency and fully exploit the system resources.

Predicting Fault-Proneness of Reused object-oriented Classes in software Post-Releases

The performance and applicability of a fault-proneness prediction model built based on internal quality measures computed on classes of one or more software systems and applied to classes from a different software system may be heavily influenced by several factors. These factors are related to the specific characteristics of the software system and its development environment. The issues related to these factors may be alleviated by building a model on a release of a software system and then applying it to following releases, in which product and process characteristics are close to the initial release. In this paper, we investigate the ability of the fault-proneness prediction models built by using fault data available up to a release of a system to predict faulty classes among those that are potentially reusable and those that are actually reused in the subsequent releases. We adapt an approach to building and using prediction models for classes reused, with or without modification, from preceding releases of a system. Our results show that relying on up-to-date fault data for the classes of a software system may significantly improve the overall accuracy in predicting fault-proneness of the post-release classes reused from an initial release. A model based on data from a system may be applied to other systems with a lesser degree of accuracy than a model built on up-to-date data from the same system.

Modern high-energy physics experiments require tracking detectors to provide high precision under difficult working conditions (high magnetic field, gravity loads and temperature gradients). This is the reason why several of them are deciding to implement optical alignment systems to monitor the displacement of tracking elements in operation. To simulate and reconstruct optical alignment systems a general purpose software, named COCOA, has been developed, using the object oriented paradigm and software engineering techniques. Thanks to the big flexibility in its design, COCOA is able to reconstruct any optical system made of a combination of the following objects: laser, x-hair laser, incoherent source-pinhole, lens, mirror, plate splitter, cube splitter, optical square, rhomboid prism, 2D sensor, 1D sensor, distance-meter, tilt-meter, user-defined. COCOA was designed to satisfy the requirements of the CMS alignment system, which has several thousands of components. Sparse matrix techniques had been investigated for solving non, linear least squares fits with such a big number of parameters. The soundness of COCOA has already been stressed in the reconstruction of the data of a full simulation of a quarter plane of the CMS muon alignment system, which implied solving a system of 900 equations with 850 unknown parameters. Full simulation of the whole CMS alignment system, with over 30,000 parameters, is quite advanced. The integration of COCOA in the CMS software framework is also under progress. Advances in object-oriented (OO) technology and distributed computing generate distributed object oriented software systems. Choosing an efficient design of such software is a multi-criteria decision problem. Performance is a key criterion that makes software developers be able to select the system that best fit their requirements and achieve longer design stability. Classical techniques of performance analysis are either unsuitable or unnatural to capture performance behavior of OO systems. In this paper, we present Performance-Based Model for Distributed OO software (DOOS) and a methodology to analyze and evaluate its performance. The new model evaluates the time cost of DOOS system considering the communication overheads while preserving the OO features such as encapsulations and inheritance.

Precise size estimation earlier in the software development life cycle has always been a challenge for the software industry. In the context of object oriented software, Use Case Model (UCM) is widely used to capture the functionality addressed in the software. Existing size estimation techniques such as use case points and use case size points do not adhere to any standard. Consequently, lots of variations are possible, leading to inaccurate size estimation. On the other hand, Function Point Analysis (FPA) has been standardized. However, the current estimation approaches based on FPA employ object modeling that happens later in the software development life cycle rather than the UCM. In order to gain the advantages of FPA as well as UCM, this paper proposes a new approach for size estimation of object oriented software. This approach is based on the UCM by adapting it to FPA. Mapping rules are proposed for proper identification and classification of various components from UCM to FPA. Estimation results obtained using the proposed approach are compared with those using finer granular level object model which adapts FPA at design phase. The close agreement between these two results indicates that the proposed approach is suitable for accurate software size estimation earlier in the software development life cycle.

Search based software testing of object-oriented containers

Automatic software testing tools are still far from ideal for real world object-oriented (OO) software. The use of nature inspired search algorithms for this problem has been investigated recently. Testing complex data structures (e.g., containers) is very challenging since testing software with simple states is already hard. Because containers are used in almost every type of software, their reliability is of utmost importance. Hence, this paper focuses on the difficulties of testing container classes with nature inspired search algorithms. We will first describe how input data can be automatically generated for testing Java containers. Input space reductions and a novel testability transformation are presented to aid the search algorithms. Different search algorithms are then considered and studied in order to understand when and why a search algorithm is effective for a testing problem. In our experiments, these nature inspired search algorithms seem to give better results than the traditional techniques described in literature. Besides, the problem of minimising the length of the test sequences is also addressed. Finally, some open research questions are given. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

How does object-oriented code refactoring influence software quality? Research landscape and challenges

Context: software refactoring aims to improve software quality and developer productivity. Numerous empirical studies investigating the impact of refactoring activities on software. quality have been conducted over the last two decades. objective: This study aims to perform a comprehensive systematic mapping study of existing empirical studies on evaluation of the effect of object-oriented code refactoring activities on software quality attributes. Method: We followed a multi-stage scrutinizing process to select 142 primary studies published till December 2017. The selected primary studies were further classified based on several aspects to answer the research questions defined for this work. In addition, we applied vote-counting approach to combine the empirical results and their analysis reported in primary studies. Results: The findings indicate that studies conducted in academic settings found more positive impact of refactoring on software quality than studies performed in industries. In general, refactoring activities caused all quality attributes to improve or degrade except for cohesion, complexity, inheritance, fault proneness and power consumption attributes. Furthermore, individual refactoring activities have variable effects on most quality attributes explored in primary studies, indicating that refactoring does not always improve all quality attributes. Conclusions: This study points out several open issues which require further investigation, e.g., lack of industrial validation, lesser coverage of refactoring activities, limited tool support, etc. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Static analysis of object references in RMI-based Java software

Distributed applications provide numerous advantages related to software performance, reliability, interoperability, and extensibility. This paper focuses on distributed Java programs built with the help of the Remote Method Invocation (RMI) mechanism. We consider points-to analysis for such applications. Points-to analysis determines the objects pointed to by a reference variable or a reference object field. Such information plays a fundamental role as a prerequisite for many other static analyses. We present the first theoretical definition of points-to analysis for RMI-based Java applications, and we present an algorithm for implementing a flow- and context-insensitive points-to analysis for such applications. We also discuss the use of points-to information for computing call graph information, for understanding data dependencies due to remote memory locations, and for identifying opportunities for improving the performance of object serialization at remote calls. The work described in this paper solves one key problem for static analysis of RMI programs and provides a starting point for future work on improving the understanding, testing, verification, and performance of RMI-based software.
