The Simons observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) observatory consisting of three small aperture telescopes and one large aperture telescope. SO is located in the Atacama Desert in Chile at an elevation of 5180m. Distributed among the four telescopes are over 60,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers across six spectral bands centered between 27 and 280 GHz. A large collection of ancillary hardware devices which produce lower rate "housekeeping" data are used to support the detector data collection. We developed a distributed control system, which we call the observatory control system (ocs), to coordinate data collection among all systems within the observatory. ocs is a core component of the deployed site software, interfacing with all on-site hardware. Alongside ocs we utilize a combination of internally and externally developed open source projects to enable remote monitoring, data management, observation coordination, and data processing. Deployment of a majority of the software is done using Docker containers. The deployment of software packages is partially done via automated Ansible scripts, utilizing a GitOps based approach for updating infrastructure on site. We describe an overview of the software and computing systems deployed within SO, including how those systems are deployed and interact with each other. We also discuss the timing distribution system and its configuration as well as lessons learned during the deployment process and where we plan to make future improvements.

The Simons observatory (SO) is a Cosmic Microwave Background experiment located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. SO consists of three small aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large aperture telescope (LAT) with a total of 60,000 detectors in six frequency bands.(1) As an observatory, SO encompasses hundreds of hardware components simultaneously running at different readout rates-all separate from its 60,000 detectors on-sky and their metadata. We provide an overview of commissioning SO's data acquisition software system for SAT-MF1, the first SAT deployed to the Atacama site. Additionally, we share insights from deploying data access software for all four telescopes, detailing how performance limitations affected data loading and quality investigations, which led to site-compatible software improvements.

Introducing the open-source observatory control system (OCS) project, which aims to provide a suite of software for managing the user-facing operations of an observatory. It includes applications for managing users and proposals, requesting and scheduling observations, and storing and accessing data products. The OCS applications are fully API-driven for core functionality, and consist of a Python Django backend with VueJS frontend (where applicable) and a set of accompanying Python libraries. Using the OCS, observatories can enjoy seamless integration with the Astronomical Event observatory Network (AEON) initiative. The core of the project consists of the Observation Portal, which provides user account and observational request life-cycle management, and the Configuration Database, which defines the capabilities of telescopes and instruments at the observatory. The OCS provides a fully functional adaptive scheduler and science archive, while its modular architecture allows them to be substituted for solutions specific to a given observatory. A flexible observation request language is employed which is suitable for a wide-range of telescope and instrument types. The OCS project applications are currently in use at Las Cumbres observatory (LCOGT), managing a network of 25 telescopes, thousands of users and their proposals, and millions of observations.

The University of Hawai'i 2.2m telescope at Maunakea has operated since 1970, and has had several controls upgrades to date. The newest system will operate as a distributed hierarchy of GNU/Linux central server, networked single-board computers, microcontrollers, and a modular motion control processor for the main axes. Rather than just a telescope control system, this new effort is towards a cohesive, modular, and robust whole observatory control system, with design goals of fully robotic unattended operation, high reliability, and ease of maintenance and upgrade.

The Simons observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background survey experiment that consists of three 0.5 m small-aperture telescopes and one 6 m large-aperture telescope, sited at an elevation of 5200 m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. SO will study the polarization and temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The observatory will require well-understood telescope pointing and scanning. Good antenna control will allow us to execute the scan strategy devised to optimize sensitivity to our scientific goals, calibrate the system with celestial targets, and make maps. To achieve this, we integrate the data acquisition and control of the telescopes' Antenna control Units (ACUs) within the software framework of the SO observatory control system (OCS). We present here the current status of the software integration for the ACUs, as well as measurements of the Small Aperture Telescope platforms' responsiveness to software commanding in the factory, plans for in situ measurements, and prospects for implementation on the Large Aperture Telescope.

The Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) is a 6-meter diameter telescope with a surface accuracy of 10 microns, operating at submillimeter to millimeter wavelengths. It will be located at 5600 meters elevation on Cerro Chajnantor in the Atacama desert of northern Chile overlooking the ALMA site. Its novel optical "crossed-Dragone" design will deliver a high-throughput, wide field-of-view telescope capable of mapping the sky very rapidly and efficiently. The telescope can host up to three instruments, with the heterodyne array "CHAI" and the direct-detection camera "Prime-Cam" as first-generation instruments. The often harsh environmental conditions at the telescope site require that FYST be operated remotely, either from the base station near San Pedro de Atacama or from the scientist's home institutions in the US, Canada and Germany. Automated observations will therefore be the dominant observation mode. FYST's observatory control system (OCS) gives instrument teams the responsibility to control observations. We believe that this model is a good fit for FYST because the observatory will operate exclusively in campaign mode. Furthermore, instrument teams have significant investments in software they want to preserve. The OCS adopts a micro-service design using off-theshelf components as far as possible to minimize development effort. We will present the OCS design and the selection of off-the-shelf components used.

The Simons observatory (SO) is an upcoming polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment with three small-aperture telescopes and one large-aperture telescope that will observe from the Atacama Desert in Chile. In total, SO will field over 60,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers in six spectral bands centered between 27 and 280 GHz to achieve the sensitivity necessary to measure or constrain numerous cosmological parameters, including the tensor-to-scalar ratio, effective number of relativistic species, and sum of the neutrino masses. The SO scientific goals require coordination and control of the hardware distributed among the four telescopes on site. To meet this need, we have designed and built an open-sourced platform for distributed system management, called the observatory control system (ocs). This control system interfaces with all subsystems including the telescope control units, the microwave multiplexing readout electronics, and the cryogenic thermometry. We have also developed a system for live monitoring of housekeeping data and alerting, both of which are critical for remote observation. We take advantage of existing open source projects, such as crossbar. io for RPC and PubSub, twisted for asynchronous events, Graf ana for online remote monitoring, and docker for containerization. We provide an overview of the SO software and computer infrastructure, including the integration of SO-developed code with open source resources and lessons learned while testing at SO labs developing hardware systems as we prepare for deployment.

The Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ) is a fully automated astronomical observatory located at the Sierra de Javalambre (Teruel, Spain) whose primary role is to conduct all-sky astronomical surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view: the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. The OAJ control system based on CIA model is a global tool to manage, monitor, control and maintain all observatory systems including not only astronomical subsystems but also infrastructure and other facilities. The OCS deployment is a standards-based development, taking advantage of technologies such as EPICS framework, EtherCAT Fieldbus and Beckhoff PLC hardware as open automation systems based on PC control technology. The present paper describes the deployment of the OCS architecture, current status of the implementation, lessons learned and stimulating results of J-PLUS survey performed with JAST/T80 telescope, the open access to the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey and next steps with JST/T250 telescope and J-PAS Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey.

The Observation Queue Scheduler (OQS) for WEAVE is described in this paper, with particular emphasis on the scheduling algorithm. WEAVE is the new 2-deg field of view multi-object (similar to 1000 multiplex) spectroscopy facility (R similar to 5000 and R similar to 20000) at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. The OQS helps to maximize the scientific impact of WEAVE observations by optimising the schedule of the observing blocks, taking into account the science priority, required instrument configuration and observing constraints. On a nightly basis the OQS will assist the observer in creating a flexible queue of suitable observing blocks to be executed. It will be also possible to run a version of the OQS for extended periods of time to provide guidance on the longer-term planning of WEAVE surveys.

The steady improvement in telescope performance at UKIRT and the increase in data acquisition rates led to a strong desire for an integrated observing framework that would meet the needs of future instrumentation, as well as providing some support for existing instrumentation. Thus the observatory Reduction and Acquisition control (ORAC) project was created in 1997 with the goals of improving the scientific productivity of the telescope, reducing the overall ongoing support requirements, and eventually supporting the use of more flexibly scheduled observing. The project was also expected to achieve this within a tight resource allocation. In October 1999 the ORAC system was commissioned at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). ORAC took a systems level approach to its overall design in creating an advance Preparation system, an observatory control system and a pipelined on-line Data Reduction system. Much of the system was designed and implemented using Object Oriented techniques and current software technologies, and attempts were made to re-use software from other projects where possible and appropriate. The design implemented is highly modular allowing future upgrading if necessary. The opportunity was also taken to implement the use of software "instrument apertures" on UKIRT. We describe the ORAC system, some of the design methods and comment on some of the issues to be tackled when attempting to use other people's software and in managing a distributed project.
