This paper investigates the problem of robust observer-based stabilization for a class of one-sided nonlinear discrete-time systems subjected to unknown inputs. We propose a simple simultaneous state and input estimator. A nonlinear controller is then proposed to compensate for the effects of unknown inputs and to ensure asymptotic stability in a closed loop. Several mathematical artifacts are used to deduce stability conditions expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. To show high performances of the proposed technique, a relevant example is provided with comparisons to recent results.

Subsynchronous resonance mitigation using variable-speed wind energy conversion systems

This work proposes a strategy to mitigate subsynchronous resonance (SSR) in synchronous generators using variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) based on full converter wind turbines. A supplementary active and reactive power to be delivered by WECSs located near synchronous generators is designed to reduce the SSR phenomenon. These supplementary signals are calculated using an observer-based controller tuned through an optimal quadratic technique which allows to minimise the WECS control effort, whereas a good torsional oscillation damping is accomplished. The power ratio between the WECS and the synchronous generator, impact on the power quality and communication time-delay requirements are also discussed. The authors compare two control approaches: the first one uses mechanical measurements of the synchronous generator (measures which have high observability of torsional modes), whereas the second one uses voltage measurements at the wind farm connection point. In this way, two control schemes using remote and local measurements are proposed, and advantages and disadvantages of both schemes are presented. The proposed scheme can provide satisfactory torsional damping under a wide range of operating points, avoiding to include dedicated SSR damping equipment, and using the new wind farms installed in the network. Eigenvalue analysis and non-linear time-domain simulations confirm the good performance of the WECS-based SSR damping controller.

Network-based H_∞ feedback control for uncertain stochastic systems

This paper investigates the problem of network-based Floc, output feedback control for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems. A novel model is proposed to describe the systems taken into two sides of communication channels in the network environment, which is more general than one side of communication channel. The design procedure of observer-based controller is presented, which, guarantees the asymptotic stability in the mean square of the resulting closed-loop system with an H-infinity performance. Robust tracking control for a class of electrically driven flexible-joint robots without velocity measurements

This article addresses the motion tracking control for a class of flexible-joint robotic manipulators actuated by brushed direct current motors. This class of electrically driven flexible-joint robots is perturbed by time-varying parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. A novel observer-based robust dynamic feedback tracking controller without velocity measurements will be developed such that the resulting closed-loop system is locally stable, all the states and signals are bounded and the trajectory tracking errors can be made as small as possible. Only the measurements of link position and armature current are required for feedback and so the number of sensors in the practical implementation of the developed control scheme can be greatly reduced. The observer structure is of reduced order in the sense that the observer is constructed only to estimate the velocity signals and whose dimension is half of the dimension of flexible-joint robots. Especially, for the set-point regulation problem, the developed controller is simplified to a linear time-invariant controller. Consequently, the robust tracking control scheme developed in this study can be extended to handle a broader class of uncertain electrically driven flexible-joint robots and the developed robust control schemes possess the properties of computational simplicity and easy implementation. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithms.

The problem of guaranteed cost observer-based controller design for a class of singular systems time-delay with uncertainties is investigated. The design method of guaranteed cost observer-based controller is given. based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, sufficient conditions for the existence of guaranteed cost observer-based state feedback control law and corresponding guaranteed cost performance index are obtained by constructing generalized Lyapunov function. It makes that the closed-loop system is robust stable.

On the geometric and dynamic structures of the H₂ optimal and H_∞ central controllers

In this paper, the geometric structure of observer-based controllers is investigated in order to characterize the controllable and unobservable subspaces of the H-2 optimal and the H-infinity central controllers. It is shown that the controllable and unobservable subspaces of the H-2 optimal and the H-infinity central controllers can be characterized by the kernel and image subspaces of the solutions of two Lyapunov equations. Under this characterization, the connection between the geometric subspaces and the dynamic behavior of the plant and those of the H-2 optimal and H-infinity controllers is derived. It is also shown that the H-2 optimal and the H-infinity central controllers inherit a certain part of the given plant dynamics in the geometric sense. In this paper, an observer-based controller for the basic DC-DC power converters is given. The DC-DC converters are represented in a general form which belong to the class of state affine systems. Passivity based Control (PBC) is used in order to regulate the output voltage. However, the corresponding feedback law requires the knowledge of the state of the converter, therefore, the estimation problem is solved by designing a Kalman-like observer. The corresponding analysis of stability for the closed-loop system (observer plus control law) is also given. Simulation and experimental results are shown in order to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

Anaerobic reactors are a typical example of processes that exhibit non-linear behavior and, also time varying parameters;hence their operation is known to be difficult to model and control. In contrast to modeling approaches, in practice linear controllers are widely employed for industrial processes because of their easy implementation and manipulation by plant operators;nevertheless linear approaches are not robust when the operating conditions change suddenly and/or strong disturbances are present. In order to introduce robust controllers to these processes, this paper addresses the tracking problem for the substrate (sulphate) control in a class of continuous bioreactors. An experimentally corroborated bioreactor model serves as benchmark problem for advanced non-linear analysis and control techniques;taking into account system non-linearities, stability and performance objectives over large operating regions. It is considered that, as it is common in practice, the rate of substrate consumption exhibits uncertainty. Results show that the proposed controller exhibits better dynamic performance than a classical Proportional-Integral control tuned using the methodology suggested by Internal Model Control.

An Iterative Method for the Output-Feedback Mixed H2/H∞Control Problem

This paper is concerned with the mixed H2/H∞ control problem with output-feedback. To propose a new iterative method for the problem we firstly construct a controller sequence which converges to the unconstrained globally optimal H2 controller. After then, using this sequence, we propose an iterative method for the mixed H2/H∞ control problem. The advantage of our method is to guarantee that the obtained solution is either the globally optimal solution or a feasible solution in the neighborhood of the boundary of the H∞ norm constraint. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our method.

In this paper, an active queue management (AQM) controller is designed for the problem of congestion control. In TCP networks, the packet-dropping probability function is considered as a control input. Thus, a TCP/AQM controller is modeled as a time-varying delay system with a saturated input. The objective of the work described here is to design robust controller capable of achieving the desired queue size and guaranteeing asymptotic stability of the operating point. To achieve this aim, we have proposed an observer-based controller. For the particular TCP mode, applying the Lyapunov-Krasovskii function defined, the system can be stabilize with the obtained observer and the state feedback control law by using linear matrix inequality (LMI). Simulation results show that the derived control strategy is validated.
