In recent years, compressed sensing (CS) has been applied to the field of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and shows great potential. The existing models are, however, based on application of the sensing matrix acquired by exact observation functions. As a result, the corresponding reconstruction algorithms are much more time consuming than traditional matched filter (MF)-based focusing methods, especially in high resolution and wide swath systems. This paper presents a fast compressed sensing SAR imaging method using omega-k algorithm for stepped frequency waveform. We formulate a new CS-SAR imaging model based on the use of the approximated stepped frequency SAR observation. We incorporate CS and omega-k algorithm within a sparse regularization framework and then solve it by the iterative thresholding algorithm. The proposed method, named CS-omega-k, can be applied to highquality and high-resolution imaging under sub-Nyquist rate sampling, while decreasing the computational cost substantially both in memory and time, resulting in a fast approach. Finally, simulations show that the proposed method can perform stepped frequency SAR imaging effectively below Nyquist sampling rate.

A Novel Approach to Moving Target Screening for UHF-Band SAR GMTI

Due to a long coherent processing interval, moving targets are severely smeared in the UHF-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. This further results in a low signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio, which might lead to an unacceptable false-alarm rate in multichannel ground moving target indication. A method of moving target screening is presented in this letter, which serves to determine whether the target detected by a constant false-alarm rate detector is a real moving target. An inverse omega-k algorithm is implemented, which can recover the Doppler phase history of any isolated target within a clutter-suppressed omega-k SAR image. The recovered data are again processed into a subimage by a simple range-Doppler algorithm. Then, the subimage is refocused by azimuth autofocus processing. The sharpness of the subimage will not change after refocusing if it only contains stationary targets;otherwise, the sharpness will significantly improve. We can eliminate a false moving target by detecting this change. The proposed method is demonstrated on simulated and real multichannel UHF-band SAR data.

Comparison of two-step and one-step motion compensation algorithms for airborne synthetic aperture radar

Airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image quality considerably degrades because of motion errors. High-precision motion compensation (MOCO) is necessary in an advanced SAR data processing scheme. In the case of ultra-high resolution, the conventional two-step MOCO algorithm introduces significant range cell migration correction (RCMC) error which causes a loss to resolution. Another method named one-step MOCO can avoid RCMC error, improving image quality obviously. Meanwhile, one-step MOCO can well integrate with the standard omega-k algorithm succinctly. A comparison of the two MOCO algorithms is demonstrated by analysing the RCMC error. Point targets simulation has validated the proposed research.

Bistatic spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) which uses a separated transmitter and receiver has been studied intensively due to its flexibility. To reconstruct the image for the bistatic SAR in the parallel track configuration, where the transmitter and the receiver have equal velocity, we modify the omega-k algorithm. Specifically, using the extended Taylor approximation (ETA), we convert the parallel track configuration into the single track configuration. Then, using the principle of the stationary phase, we propose an analytical method to increase the image quality of bistatic SAR systems.

For flexibility and cost reduction, the forward-looking bistatic spotlight synthetic aperture radar (FL-BSSAR) which uses the side-looking transmitter and the forward-looking receiver has been studied recently. For the FL-BSSAR imaging, we introduce a modified omega-k algorithm. Specifically, using rotation and shifting of the receiver path and resampling of the transmitter path, we convert the FL-BSSAR into the side-looking BSSAR. Then, we modify the matched filter and Stolt interpolation using the principle of the stationary phase to obtain the SAR image. Simulation results show that the modified omega-k algorithm enhances the image quality.

Bistatic SAR Data Focusing Using an omega-k algorithm Based on Method of Series Reversion

This paper deals with an omega-k algorithm for focusing bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The key of the proposed algorithm is the derivation of a frequency mapping function by using Neo's method of series reversion. The registration of the focused image onto the ground plane is discussed in detail, which is based on a conclusion that the targets whose instantaneous Doppler frequencies at zero azimuth time are the same as that of the reference target at zero azimuth time will all be focused at the reference target's azimuth position in the focused image. The range invariance region size, which the proposed algorithm can process, is also determined in this paper. The proposed algorithm can handle extreme bistatic configurations with wide apertures and large squint angles. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by simulation results. Although developed for the azimuth-invariant case, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to the azimuth-variant case, as long as we divide the SAR data into blocks in the azimuth direction so that each block of SAR data can be assumed quasi-stationary in the azimuth direction.

A novel modified omega-k algorithm for synthetic aperture imaging lidar through the atmosphere

The spatial resolution of a conventional imaging lidar system is constrained by the diffraction limit of the telescope's aperture. The combination of the lidar and synthetic aperture (SA) processing techniques may overcome the diffraction limit and pave the way for a higher resolution air borne or space borne remote sensor. Regarding the lidar transmitting frequency modulation continuous-wave (FMCW) signal, the motion during the transmission of a sweep and the reception of the corresponding echo were expected to be one of the major problems. The given modified omega-k algorithm takes the continuous motion into account, which can compensate for the Doppler shift induced by the continuous motion efficiently and azimuth ambiguity for the low pulse recurrence frequency limited by the tunable laser. And then, simulation of Phase Screen (PS) distorted by atmospheric turbulence following the von karman spectrum by using Fourier Transform is implemented in order to simulate turbulence. Finally, the computer simulation shows the validity of the modified algorithm and if in the turbulence the synthetic aperture length does not exceed the similar coherence length of the atmosphere for SAIL, we can ignore the effect of the turbulence.

Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Using Stepped Frequency Waveform

This paper presents a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system using a stepped frequency waveform. The main problem in stepped frequency SAR is the range difference in one sequence of pulses. This paper analyzes the influence of range difference in one sequence of pulses in detail and proposes a method to compensate this influence in the Doppler domain. A Stolt interpolation for the stepped frequency signal is used to focus the data accurately. The parameters for the stepped frequency SAR are analyzed, and some criteria are proposed for system design. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. The experimental data are collected by using a stepped frequency radar mounted on a rail.

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data simulator is an important tool for testing the system parameters and the imaging algorithms. In this paper, a scene raw data simulator based on an inverse omega-k algorithm for bistatic SAR of a translational invariant case is proposed. The differences between simulations of monostatic and bistatic SAR are also described. The algorithm proposed has high precision and can be used in long-baseline configuration and for single-pass interferometry. Implementation details are described, and plenty of simulation results are provided to validate the algorithm.
