Revisiting design principles and guidelines for online makerspace services and programming in public libraries

Purpose- The purpose of this paper is to revisit previous design principles and guidelines for online makerspaces in public libraries (Kim et al., 2020) and expand the design principles with more updated implications and examples from the literature published during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach - The authors reviewed recently published papers about online transitions of makerspaces, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, summarized their implications and deduced applicable design principles and guidelines. Findings - This paper proposes updated design principles and guidelines based on four key areas: Program and service design;Tools and materials;Facilitation;and Logistic support. These updated design principles considered a wider range of patrons that public library makerspaces may serve, the digital divide issues and logistic concerns that should be addressed beyond the scope of a single makerspace. Originality/value - This paper compiles various lessons learned and strategies regarding online makerspaces and maker programming for public libraries and provides helpful design principles and guidelines for the continued use of online components for makerspace services and programs.

Web Environment for programming and Control of a Mobile Robot in a Remote Laboratory

Remote robotics laboratories have been successfully used for engineering education. However, few of them use mobile robots to to teach computer science. This article describes a mobile robot Control and programming Environment (CPE) and its pedagogical applications. The system comprises a remote laboratory for robotics, an online programming tool, and a virtual learning environment. It allows experiments with a mobile robot to be carried out, tested and validated remotely, using a simple graphic interface via web browser, without additional software installation on the user's computer. Students can control and manipulate the robot with simple commands without worrying about hardware details or use C/C++ programming language to develop complex programs. The robot has been built with inexpensive components and has sensors that enable its use in several experiments. CPE can be used in contextualized teaching in various subjects of computer science, both in class and at distance. A practical application of the whole system using CPE, introducing programming concepts, is also described in this paper. The initial assessment of the environment as an educational tool shows high levels of interest among our students, an improvement in their academic scores, and potential for application in the context of computing education, when properly introduced as a learning tool.

Although an automated flexible production cell is an intriguing prospect for small to median enterprises (SMEs) in current global market conditions, the complexity of programming remains one of the major hurdles preventing automation using industrial robots for SMEs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent research progresses on the programming methods for industrial robots, including online programming, offline programming (OLP), and programming using Augmented Reality (AR). With the development of more powerful 3D CAD/PLM software, computer vision, sensor technology, etc. new programming methods suitable for SMEs are expected to grow in years to come. Straight-line programs in geometric elimination theory

We present a new method for solving symbolically zero-dimensional polynomial equation systems in the affine and toric case. The main feature of our method is the use of problem adapted data structures. arithmetic networks and straight-line programs. For sequential time complexity measured by network size we obtain the following result: it is possible to solve any affine or toric zero-dimensional equation system in nonuniform sequential time which is polynomial in the length of the input description and the "geometric degree" of the equation system. Here, the input is thought to be given by a straight-line program (or alternatively in sparse representation), and the length of the input is measured by number of variables, degree of equations and size of the program (or sparsity of the equations). The geometric degree of the input system has to be adequately defined. It is always bounded by the algebraic-combinatoric "Bezout number" of the system which is given by the Hilbert function of a suitable homogeneous ideal. However, in many important cases, the value of the geometric degree of the system is much smaller than its Bezout number since this geometric degree does not take into account multiplicities or degrees of extraneous components (which may appear at infinity in the affine case or may be contained in some coordinate hyperplane in the tonic case). Our method contains a new application of a classic tool to symbolic computation: we use Newton iteration in order to simplify straight-line programs occurring in elimination procedures. Our new technique allows for practical implementations, a meaningful characterization of the intrinsic algebraic complexity of typic elimination problems and reduces the still unanswered question of their intrinsic bit complexity to algorithmic arithmetics. In this paper we describe a TSPC (True Single-Phase-Clock) barrel shifter for high-speed, real time applications, The circuit consists of a shift and rotate array and a control unit, both having a pipeline Structure, which allows on-line programming, Using 1.5 mu m CMOS technology, a full custom prototype for 16-b data shift and rotate array has been implemented, with a simplified control unit, and testing circuitry, Worst case HSPICE simulations indicate a maximum operating frequency of over 100 MHz, both for the barrel with on-line programming acid for the barrel implemented, The full functionality of the prototype has been tested up to 25 MHz, although each bit path has been tested at 100 MHz.

We present Elicel, an online CS (computer science) education platform, and Elivate, a system for (i) taking student learning data from Elice, (ii) inferring their progress through an educational taxonomy tailored for programming education, and (iii) generating the real-time assistance for students and lecturers. online courses suffer from high average attrition rates, and early prediction can enable early personalized feedback to motivate and assist students who may be having difficulties. Elice captures detailed student learning activities including intermediate revisions of code as students make progress toward completing their programming exercises and timestamps of student logins and submissions. Elivate then takes those data to analyze each student's progress and estimate the time to completion. In doing so, Elivate uses a learning taxonomy and automatic clustering of source code revisions. Using more than 240,000 code revisions generated by 1,000 students, we demonstrate how Elivate processes large-scale student data and generates appropriate real-time feedback for students.

During pandemic period educational institution were challenged will many issues how to achieve their goal continuing with online teaching. In some fields it was difficult to conduct effective teaching and learning and one of this field was computer programming teaching. In the field of programming, the use of online compilers was seen as an important challenge. The use of online compilers was seen by some students as a solution (especially during pandemic lockdown) when they did not have a computer to install an IDE but used a tablet/smartphone simply connected to the Internet, or they founded difficult to install/configure different compilers. The aim of this paper is to study and explore online compilers by making a comparison between them. A sample of 10 online compilers that were fully or partially open-source was selected. The comparison of compilers was done in 2 aspects, the first in the services they provide and the second in their performance in executing programs. Finally, a ranking of the three best compilers is given based on comparisons of the two aspects.

How Interested Are Planetarium Visitors in Astronomy? Comparing online and In-person Audiences

During the COVID-19 pandemic, informal learning environments (ILEs) were forced to move programming online for the safety of staff and visitors. The Big Astronomy Project responded to the pandemic by releasing a planetarium show as a virtual YouTube 360 stream. This project was also utilized in the late stages of the pandemic in-person at planetarium theaters, offering an opportunity for comparison between two modalities of showing a planetarium program. In general, ILEs often have a clear ambition to spark interest and support existing interest in order to support continued engagement after a visit. We use the four-phase interest model to characterize and compare audience's prior interest levels between a virtual and in-person environment. We used focus groups and interviews with audience members consisting of 46 individuals across the 2 modalities. We found that the individuals who watched the show virtually tended toward later phases of interest compared to those who watched the show in-person. We also explore how different audiences rated their level of interest. Based on these results we suggest that the virtual and in-person activities may need to be targeted to different audience interest levels.

Matlab is a mathematics software, which is the industry leader in numerical calculation, but this software takes up a lot of system memory and is extremely cumbersome to install. As various types of modeling rise and the intensity and frequency of discipline penetration are deepened and accelerate gradually, Matlab has gradually entered more people's field of vision. In order to simplify the programming environment and improve the convenience, a Matlab programming environment based on Web is proposed in this paper. Compared with the traditional Matlab programming environment, the main features of the system are that it does not need to deploy any development environment locally, and users can write and run Matlab code through the browser of mobile phone, tablet, computer;at the same time, the system also supports standard input, parameter input, and image output. Through the research and testing of the system, the programming environment has strong feasibility, excellent user experience, good concurrency and stability.

Purpose - In the process of the implementation of the eBologna program and the recent change of the university system, curricula at German universities have been redesigned;courses have been condensed and learning content has been re-structured into modules, each of which requires an evaluation. Simultaneously, skills required for working in research and development changed;knowledge of mathematical or numerical algorithms and programming skills play an increasingly important role in the daily job routine of the working engineer. The purpose of this paper is to describe, implement and test a new course on numerical simulations along with a new software infrastructure, addressing this predicament. Design/methodology/approach - To support learning by practical exercises, engineering faculties, the faculties of mathematics and physics, and the Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart setup a project for implementing an online programming lab for teaching the required skills. The focus of this project is to provide easy access to the necessary software tools, to avoid the overhead of installation and maintenance, and to seamlessly integrate these tools into the e-learning infrastructure of the university. Findings - Student evaluations showed a high acceptance of the project and the developed software is now well-accepted and taken as a self-evident part of the homework routine. Originality/value - An online programming lab that integrates seamlessly into the e-learning infrastructure of the university and is platform and system independent by following the established SCORM standard.
