This paper describes a notion of substitutions in food recipes and their ontology design pattern. We build upon state-of-the-art models for food and process. We also present scenarios and examples for the design pattern. Finally, the pattern is mapped to available and relevant domain ontologies and made publicly available at the *** portal.

Critical systems require continuous collection and integration of knowledge from the environment. The challenge is effective integration of knowledge in a dynamic environment. This work proposes a knowledge model that is adaptable to changes. However, there is a lack of ontology structure and reasoning that reacts immediately to availability of a new piece of information in real-time. This paper presents a novel ontology design pattern that facilitates automatic integration of knowledge through event detection and context analysis. Theoretical analysis and a use case are used to assess the model. The work claims a contribution towards developing mechanism for ontology pragmatics and addressing challenges of the smart computing.

An ontology design pattern and its use case for modeling material transformation

In this work we introduce a content ontology design pattern (ODP) to model and reason about material transformations, a concept that occurs in many different domains ranging from computational chemistry, biology, and industrial ecology to architecture. We model the relationships between inputs, outputs, and catalysts in the transformation process as well as the spatial and temporal constraints necessary for a transformation to occur. Both a graphical illustration and a formal axiomatization are provided, and the commonalities and differences to similar ontologies and patterns are discussed. Usage of the pattern is illustrated by applying it to an intuitive and familiar example and by discussing how the pattern is able to address a set of competency questions. Additionally, we present a detailed use case from the domain of sustainable construction that leverages the material transformation pattern in combination with the already-existing semantic trajectory ontology design pattern.

Ontologies are an important tool in knowledge representation. Currently, one of the most popular languages to model ontologies is the Web ontology Language (OWL). Such language is in its second version (OWL 2), which was designed to overcome some issues in expressivity, syntax, semantics and other practical aspects of the previous version. However, it still lacks some constructs that would be useful in some domains and situations. One of such constructs is what could be called "universal relationship" (i.e. a relationship with maximal degree of universality, so that, if established between two classes, states that every individual of a class is related to every individual of the other by this particular relationship). Therefore, this work brings an ontology design patteru to address such modeling issue. It requires OWL 2 features to be implemented, but dispenses any other external resources to handle the problem. The article presents the structure of the pattern and its implementation steps, as well as an example from the biomedical field.

Two ontology design patterns in the domain of collections

Collections are objects used to arrange, into a single unit, multiple data items that forma natural group. Different types of collections exist, due to different constraints based on whether or not they impose an order on their elements and whether or not they allow repetition of elements. Any of them are easily found in several domains of our everyday life. For instance, a deck of cards, the prime divisors of a number or the teams that compete in a championship can be seen as a collection. Thus, an effective modeling of collections is a recurring issue in information management. In the ontology design field, recurring modeling problems can be addressed by the use of ontology design patterns (ODPs). In the case of collections, ODPs have been proposed for representing sequences, lists, sets and bags. However, none of these patterns are completely adequate for representing collections of ordered elements without repetition. In this paper we present an ODP for representing that notion, which we have named Permutation. Moreover, another ODP named ListOfPermutations is also introduced, which allows to represent how the order of a Permutation varies along time. Because not all constraints required by these ODPs can be represented in OWL 2, SHACL shapes have been used in their definitions.

A modular ontology modeling approach to developing digital product passports to promote circular economy in the built environment

The significant impact of the built environment on resource consumption and waste production has led to calls for a shift towards a circular economy model that maximizes the efficient use of resources. This study explores the use of digital product passports (DPPs) to improve how we manage products throughout their lifecycle. However, dealing with the complexity and large volume of data in DPPs can be challenging in terms of effective information management and utilization. We address this issue by adopting a modular ontological approach to systematically capture product lifecycle information from its origin to its end -of -life phase. To ensure interoperability and reusability of the ontology, we annotate key concepts and relationships using International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards that promote circular economy. Our research led to the development of several ontology modules derived from literature reviews and interviews conducted with industry and academia experts who specialize in sustainability. These modules were then integrated to create a digital product passport ontology. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using a modular ontology approach to manage the complex information inherent in DPPs paving the way for more sustainable management practices in the built environment sector.

Background The exploration of cancer vaccines has yielded a multitude of studies, resulting in a diverse collection of information. The heterogeneity of cancer vaccine data significantly impedes effective integration and analysis. While CanVaxKB serves as a pioneering database for over 670 manually annotated cancer vaccines, it is important to distinguish that a database, on its own, does not offer the structured relationships and standardized definitions found in an ontology. Recognizing this, we expanded the Vaccine ontology (VO) to include those cancer vaccines present in CanVaxKB that were not initially covered, enhancing VO's capacity to systematically define and interrelate cancer *** An ontology design pattern (ODP) was first developed and applied to semantically represent various cancer vaccines, capturing their associated entities and relations. By applying the ODP, we generated a cancer vaccine template in a tabular format and converted it into the RDF/OWL format for generation of cancer vaccine terms in the VO. '12MP vaccine' was used as an example of cancer vaccines to demonstrate the application of the ODP. VO also reuses reference ontology terms to represent entities such as cancer diseases and vaccine hosts. Description Logic (DL) and SPARQL query scripts were developed and used to query for cancer vaccines based on different vaccine's features and to demonstrate the versatility of the VO representation. Additionally, ontological modeling was applied to illustrate cancer vaccine related concepts and studies for in-depth cancer vaccine analysis. Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) of aircraft components is a complex and critical process with high product and process variability. To ensure the safety and reliability of aircraft, it is crucial to have accurate and up-todate information about components throughout their lifecycle. However, this information is often scattered across various systems and stakeholders, resulting in data fragmentation and inconsistency. Data integration is needed to create a unified and comprehensive view of the components lifecycle. The Product-Process-Resource (PPR) modeling framework is a cross-industry framework that provides a comprehensive view of the various dimensions involved. The framework is applied to the MRO service provider domain. This paper explores the use of standards and norms to formalize an information model based on the PPR approach to improve data integration and ensure a high level of reuse. The proposed model integrates several community-maintained standards such as VDI/VDE 3682, EASA Part 145, EASA Part M, DIN 13306, DIN EN 61512, and IATA's ONE Record to provide a standardized and consistent representation of component MRO data.

Narrative Cartography with Knowledge Graphs

Narrative cartography is a discipline which studies the interwoven nature of stories and maps. However, conventional geovisualization techniques of narratives often encounter several prominent challenges, including the data acquisition & integration challenge and the semantic challenge. To tackle these challenges, in this paper, we propose the idea of narrative cartography with knowledge graphs (KGs). Firstly, to tackle the data acquisition & integration challenge, we develop a set of KG-based GeoEnrichment toolboxes to allow users to search and retrieve relevant data from integrated cross-domain knowledge graphs for narrative mapping from within a GISystem. With the help of this tool, the retrieved data from KGs are directly materialized in a GIS format which is ready for spatial analysis and mapping. Two use cases - Magellan's expedition and World War II - are presented to show the effectiveness of this approach. In the meantime, several limitations are identified from this approach, such as data incompleteness, semantic incompatibility, and the semantic challenge in geovisualization. For the later two limitations, we propose a modular ontology for narrative cartography, which formalizes both the map content (Map Content Module) and the geovisualization process (Cartography Module). We demonstrate that, by representing both the map content and the geovisualization process in KGs (an ontology), we can realize both data reusability and map reproducibility for narrative cartography.

Wikibase - which is the software underlying Wikidata - is a powerful platform for knowledge graph creation and management. However, it has been developed with a crowd -sourced knowledge graph creation scenario in mind, which in particular means that it has not been designed for use case scenarios in which a tightly controlled high -quality schema, in the form of an ontology, is to be imposed, and indeed, independently developed ontologies do not necessarily map seamlessly to the Wikibase approach. In this paper, we provide the key ingredients needed in order to combine traditional ontology modeling with use of the Wikibase platform, namely a set of axiom patterns that bridge the paradigm gap, together with usage instructions and a worked example for historical data.
