ontology-based data access: An application to intermodal logistics

In this paper, we investigate ontology-based data access (OBDA) to build information systems whose purposes are (i) gathering data from a network of intermodal terminals, and (ii) computing performance indicators of the network. This application domain is characterized by large amounts of data and relatively simple data models, making it a natural challenge for logic-based knowledge representation and reasoning techniques. Considering relational database (RDB) technology as a yardstick, we show that careful engineering of OBDA can achieve RDB-like scalability even in demanding applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the potential of OBDA in a typical business-size application.

Process mining aims at discovering, monitoring, and improving business processes by extracting knowledge from event logs. In this respect, process mining can be applied only if there are proper event logs that are compatible with accepted standards, such as extensible event stream (XES). Unfortunately, in many real world set-ups, such event logs are not explicitly given, but instead are implicitly represented in legacy information systems. In this work, we exploit a framework and associated methodology for the extraction of XES event logs from relational data sources that we have recently introduced. Our approach is based on describing logs by means of suitable annotations of a conceptual model of the available data, and builds on the ontology-based data access (OBDA) paradigm for the actual log extraction. Making use of a real-world case study in the services domain, we compare our novel approach with a more traditional extract-transform-load based one, and are able to illustrate its added value. We also present a set of tools that we have developed and that support the OBDA-based log extraction framework. The tools are integrated as plugins of the ProM process mining suite.

We present an ontology-based data access technique for the integration of geospatial data from different sources and different formats using ontologies and mappings. Our technique is implemented in the system Ontop-spatial, which enables the execution of GeoSPARQL queries over geospatial relational databases storing vector or raster data by performing on-the-fly GeoSPARQL-to-SQL translation using ontologies and mappings. Ontop-spatial is generally more efficient than traditional geospatial RDF stores. Linked geospatial data can then be visualised on the map using Sextant, an online tool for browsing and visualisation of linked geospatial data.

ontology-based data access is an approach to organizing access to a database augmented with a logical theory. In this approach query answering proceeds through a reformulation of a given query into a new one that can be answered without any use of theory. Thus the problem reduces to the standard database setting. However, the size of the query may increase substantially during the reformulation. In this survey we review a recently developed framework on proving lower and upper bounds on the size of this reformulation by employing methods and results from Boolean Circuit Complexity. The survey does not assume from the reader any prior knowledge on ontology-based data access.

Inconsistency-tolerant query answering in ontology-based data access

ontology-based data access (OBDA) is receiving great attention as a new paradigm for managing information systems through semantic technologies. According to this paradigm, a Description Logic ontology provides an abstract and formal representation of the domain of interest to the information system, and is used as a sophisticated schema for accessing the data and formulating queries over them. In this paper, we address the problem of dealing with inconsistencies in OBDA. Our general goal is both to study DL semantical frameworks that are inconsistency-tolerant, and to devise techniques for answering unions of conjunctive queries under such inconsistency-tolerant semantics. Our work is inspired by the approaches to consistent query answering in databases, which are based on the idea of living with inconsistencies in the database, but trying to obtain only consistent information during query answering, by relying on the notion of database repair. We first adapt the notion of database repair to our context, and show that, according to such a notion, inconsistency-tolerant query answering is intractable, even for very simple DLs. Therefore, we propose a different repair-based semantics, with the goal of reaching a good compromise between the expressive power of the semantics and the computational complexity of inconsistency-tolerant query answering. Indeed, we show that query answering under the new semantics is first-order rewritable in OBDA, even if the ontology is expressed in one of the most expressive members of the DL-Lite family. We present Plato, a novel semantic data cube system leveraging ontology-based data access technologies. The concept of semantic data cubes, pioneered by Augustin et al., offers a novel approach to managing Earth Observation data, intertwining symbolic high-level concepts with raw numerical values. While data cube infrastructures have gained prominence, Plato stands out by bridging the gap between ontology-driven semantics and multidimensional data storage, enabling users to glean insights from data in a more intuitive and integrated manner. By employing ontology-based data access methodologies, Plato establishes connections between ontologies capturing geospatial knowledge and underlying data sources, facilitating seamless querying and interpretation. In this paper we describe the software architecture of Plato, we discuss its applications in the context of the DeepCube project and we evaluate its performance with real data from these applications.

Foundations of ontology-based data access under bag semantics

ontology-based data access (OBDA) is a popular approach for integrating and querying multiple data sources by means of a shared ontology. The ontology is linked to the sources using mappings, which assign to ontology predicates views over the data. The conventional semantics of OBDA is set-based that is, the extension of the views defined by the mappings does not contain duplicate tuples. This treatment is, however, in disagreement with the standard semantics of database views and database management systems in general, which is based on bags and where duplicate tuples are retained by default. The distinction between set and bag semantics in databases is very significant in practice, and it influences the evaluation of aggregate queries. In this article, we propose and study a bag semantics for OBDA which provides a solid foundation for the future study of aggregate and analytic queries. Our semantics is compatible with both the bag semantics of database views and the set-based conventional semantics of OBDA. Furthermore, it is compatible with existing bag-based semantics for data exchange recently proposed in the literature. We show that adopting a bag semantics makes conjunctive query answering in OBDA coNP-hard in data complexity. To regain tractability of query answering, we consider suitable restrictions along three dimensions, namely, the query language, the ontology language, and the adoption of the unique name assumption. Our investigation shows a complete picture of the computational properties of query answering under bag semantics over ontologies in the DL-Lite family. (C) 2019 The Authors. Performance model's development: a novel approach encompassing ontology-based data access and visual analytics

The quantitative evaluation of research is currently carried out by means of indicators calculated on data extracted and integrated by analysts who elaborate them by creating illustrative tables and plots of results. In this approach, the robustness of the metrics used and the possibility for users of the metrics to intervene in the evaluation process are completely neglected. We propose a new approach which is able to move forward, from indicators' development to an interactive performance model's development. It combines the advantages of the ontology-based data access paradigm with the flexibility and robustness of a visual analytics environment putting the consumer/stakeholder at the centre of the evaluation. A detailed description of such an approach is presented in the paper. The approach is illustrated and evaluated trough a comprehensive user's study that proves the added capabilities and the benefits that a user of performance models can have by using this approach.

The MASTRO system for ontology-based data access

In this paper we present MASTRO, a Java tool for ontology-based data access (OBDA) developed at Sapienza Universita di Roma and at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. MASTRO manages OBDA systems in which the ontology is specified in DL-Lite(A, id), a logic of the DL-Lite family of tractable Description Logics specifically tailored to ontology-based data access, and is connected to external JDBC enabled data management systems through semantic mappings that associate SQL queries over the external data to the elements of the ontology. Advanced forms of integrity constraints, which turned out to be very useful in practical applications, are also enabled over the ontologies. Optimized algorithms for answering expressive queries are provided, as well as features for intensional reasoning and consistency checking. MASTRO provides a proprietary API, an OWLAPI compatible interface, and a plugin for the Protege 4 ontology editor. It has been successfully used in several projects carried out in collaboration with important organizations, on which we briefly comment in this paper.

The gap between legacy data sources and semantic web technologies can be bridged with the ontology-based data access (OBDA) methodology by providing protocols and tools for translating old data into ontologies. Querying modern ontologies in OWL/RDF files and understood as networks of objects having describing properties and inter-linked by relations requires writing SPARQL queries, where it is essential to have a technical proficiency not usually in the hands of lay users. For studying this problem, we developed a prototype tool called GF to capable of executing arbitrary SPARQL queries posed against OWL/RDF ontologies obtained by OBDA from H2 relational databases as well as Excel and CSV spreadsheets. The tool allows to visually specify a subset of SPARQL selection and construction queries using a Query-By-Example approach. Our research shows that, given an OWL/RDF ontology obtained from any suitable data source, our implementation can express an important proper subset of queries and translate them into executable SPARQL queries.
