Risk Factors and Practices for the development of open source software From Developers' Perspective

open source software (OSS) has achieved popularity, however there are various software product quality problems, security issues and certain challenges confronting the OSS growth that need to be identified and addressed. The main focus of this research is to identify the risk factors associated with open-source software and the practices for those risks which will help software development companies and individuals to mitigate the risks. A systematic literature review (SLR) is employed for the identification of potential risk factors in OSS whereas questionnaire survey is used to validate the findings of the SLR from the relevant expert community. In the second round another SLR is carried out to identify the practices for softening the effect of risk-factors in OSS development. A total of 14 risk factors from the developers' perspective are identified via SLR in OSS. Amid the risk factors identified bugs, insufficient product documentation, and lack of communication and coordination among developers are considered the most important Further, we performed a secondary SLR to identify the practices for mitigating the effects of the risk factors in OSS. Therefore, a total of 31 practices for mitigating and addressing the risk factors in OSS were identified. In this work, we identified 14 risk factors and 31 practices for mitigating the critical risk factors, through SLR for adapting OSS development from developers' perspectives. We argue that focusing on the identified risk factors would minimize the risks associated with OSS. We also recommend that OSS developers should diligently consider all the risk factors that have been identified in the study for increased software productivity and distribution of reliable and robust source code.

opening up firms to open source has changed professional programmers' work in software development. In their work practice they must cope with two modes of software production: one based on proprietary, closed work situations, the other built around open source community ways of cooperation and knowledge sharing. In this article we present a study of how programmers cope with the co-existence of an industrial/commercial and a community/commons based mode of production. We analyze how they develop strategies to handle tensions that arise from contradictions between these two modes, and how it changes programmers' approach towards open source software development in the company. The study covers proprietary companies that have gradually incorporated open source software (hybrid companies) and SMEs entirely built around open source business concepts (pure-play companies). Four strategies are elaborated and discussed in-depth: Engineering in the lab, Market driven tailoring. Developing the community consortium and Peer-production. At a more general level, the study contributes to our understanding of how the transformation of proprietary production processes into a more open mode of knowledge work is not only associated with company strategies, but also with tensions and new demands on how work is strategically handled by knowledge workers. This paper discusses the development and release of an open source real time motion capture system for character animation, the openMoCap. The software carries out the entire pipeline for acquisition of motion data and its output in appropriate formats to modeling and animation software. openMoCap uses the passive optical capture technique to follow markers positions in a scene across the time, and its development is based on digital image analysis techniques. The defined architecture is designed for real time motion recording and is flexible and modular. It allows the addition of new optimized modules for specific functions, as an interface to virtual and augmented reality headsets, different cameras sets and markerless motion capture, taking advantage of the existing ones. In order to obtain quantitative results to assess the software and the created motion capture workflow, openMoCap was compared with a commercial optical motion capture system. The performance of the three most used trackers was also evaluated with openMoCap The present version of the software is available to download at GitHub. In this paper, the architecture, construction modules and performance comparison are discussed with the scope to present the software as a choice to input motion data to virtual and augmented reality applications.

open source software development (OSSD) projects is a collaborative process among developers and volunteers with common interests. OSSD is increasingly becoming a trend and many successful OSSD projects have contributed software packages which have been widely adopted. Unfortunately, there is Pareto principle in OSSD projects, and a large number of OSSD projects have little influence, many projects a re unable to attract user interest. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors affecting OSSD project success as measured by project popularity. While technical factors such as license and compatibility with certain operating systems have a direct influence on the popularity of OSSD projects, development-related factors also have latent impacts on the popularity of OSSD projects. Therefore, we collect data on 445 projects and successfully build a structural equation model (SEM) which depicts the inherent relationships between development-related factors and OSSD project popularity. The steps to build the SEM and the implications of this model are discussed in detail in this paper.

This article comprises two sub–areas: first, the trend in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software development based on the review of literature; and second, it has been observed that, particularly for the small-scale sector, there is a dire necessity for open source ERP systems. The small-scale sector is growing at rapid rate and becoming a vital element in manufacturing as well as economy in any country. This article reviews the research works in published literature on the functional impact of ERP software development for the small-scale businesses from January 2002 to April 2012. A total of 68 articles from 38 journals are reviewed, where this present work exploits particularly the conventional practices in open source software modelling. This work attempts to serve two major goals. First, it will be useful for the researchers interested in determining the research questions in the area of functional impact of ERP software development for small-scale businesses. Second, it serves as a comprehensive reference on the subject till date providing useful information for ERP developers.

Understanding group maintenance behavior in Free/Libre open-source software projects: The case of Fire and Gaim

In this paper, we investigate group maintenance behavior in community-based Free/Libre open-source software (FLOSS) development teams. Adopting a sociolinguistic perspective, we conceptualize group maintenance behavior as interpersonal communication tactics specifically, social presence and politeness tactics that help maintain relationships among group members. Developer email messages were collected from two FLOSS projects with different development statuses, and their content was analyzed to identify frequently used group maintenance tactics. We then compared the group maintenance tactics used in the two projects, finding differences that reflect changes in the project work practices. Our work theoretically contributes to FLOSS research and has practical implications for FLOSS practitioners. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Participatory design in OSS development: interpretive case studies in company and community OSS development contexts

This article examines distributed participatory design in open source software (OSS) development. User participation is becoming a relevant topic of research in the OSS development context. Though it has not been examined much to date, the OSS development context has been argued to advocate a particular type of participatory design, which can now be scrutinised in its natural setting as it evolves. Two interpretive case studies on user participation in OSS development are included in this article. The first examines a traditional community OSS development project;the second concentrates on the company OSS development context, the case being a software development unit of a global corporation involved in OSS development. Through analysis of the cases, different forms of participatory design (PD), especially of distributed PD, are identified. Distributed PD is interpreted to include gaining an understanding of users' current practices, redesigning them together with users and gathering feedback from users related to the solutions. Different kinds of roles are available to users, as well as to for intermediaries 'representing users'. Especially, the importance of online forum-based and intermediary-driven PD is emphasised in this article. Implications for PD and OSS research and practice are considered.

A revised open source usability defect classification taxonomy

Context: : Reporting usability defects is a critical part of improving software. Accurately classifying these reported usability defects is critical for reporting, understanding, triaging, prioritizing and ultimately fixing such defects. However, existing usability defect classification taxonomies have several limitations when used for open source software (OSS) development. This includes incomplete coverage of usability defect problems, unclear criticality of defects, lack of formal usability training of most OSS defect reporters and developers, and inconsistent terminology and descriptions. Objective: : To address this gap, as part of our wider usability defect reporting research, we have developed a new usability defect taxonomy specifically designed for use on OSS projects. Method: : We used Usability Problem Taxonomy (UPT) to classify 377 usability defect reports from Mozilla Thunderbird, Firefox for Android, and the Eclipse Platform. At the same time, we also used the card-sorting technique to group defects that could not be classified using UPT. We looked for commonalities and similarities to further group the defects within each category as well as across categories. Results: : We constructed a new taxonomy for classifying OSS usability defects, called open source Usability Defect Classification (OSUDC). OSUDC was developed by incorporating software engineering and usability engineering needs to make it feasible to be used in open source software development. The use of the taxonomy has been validated on five real cases of usability defects. However, evaluation results using the OSUDC were only moderately successful. Conclusion: : The OSUDC serves as a common vocabulary to describe and classify usability defects with respect to graphical user interface issues. It may help software developers to better understand usability defects and prioritize them accordingly. The open source software development model is a highly complex activity among voluntary software developers. This model of development has led to the availability of software repositories in the public domain. Bug repositories are part of software repositories. They maintain and store bug reports that arise after software has been deployed. Bug triaging, typically is a recommendation problem in a volatile environment. Bug triaging systems use the past history of bug re-assignments and information present in the bug report summary to make new recommendations. Any recommendation system needs positive and negative feedback on the recommendation made so as to fine tune its performance and to remain relevant. Ant colony optimisation is a stochastic technique that has pheromone trail deposit as positive feedback and pheromones evaporation as negative feedback. This paper presents a framework for automated bug triaging system based on ant colony optimisation. The performance of the proposed framework is validated with the bug reports of Eclipse Project. The parameters including: 1) path length;2) precision;3) recall;4) path similarity are considered. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed framework is better than the existing weighted breadth first search (WBFS) system.

What are the factors affecting the handover process in open source development?

Background: Handover is common in open source software (OSS) development, which could have a negative impact on software quality and progress. Objective: We aim to identify factors associated with the handover process for future improvements. Method: We first propose a metric, i.e. Active Days Coverage (abbr. ADC) together with an algorithm, i.e., Handover Duration Identification (abbr. HDI) to identify the handover processes in open software projects automatically. To evaluate our method, we selected two sample sets (i.e. sample set A and sample set B) from Github. With the sample set A, an automatic identification (to identify possible handover processes) together with an email inquiry (to identify actual handover processes) have been conducted. With the sample set B, we analyze fourteen potential factors impacting a handover process using the stepwise regression method. Results: The precision, recall and accuracy of our identification method reach 0.67, 0.73 and 0.65 respectively. The rate of correct identification of HDI algorithm is over 0.5 on average. Six factors were identified as the major factors impacting a handover process as well as seven combinations of these six factors were tested by stepwise regression method to explore possible correlation with the corresponding handover duration, among which five combinations show R-2 greater than 0.4 with one reaches 0.493. Conclusion: This study implies that handover can be identified automatically. Developers usually follow a common handover process under various context. Moreover, although a significant correlation between the duration of a handover process and the combination of certain factors could be observed, there is no single factor that has a significant correlation with the duration of a handover process.
