Developers in open source projects must make decisions on contributions from other community members, such as whether or not to accept a pull request. However, secondary factors-beyond the code itself-can influence those decisions. For example, signals from GitHub profiles, such as a number of followers, activity, names, or gender can also be considered when developers make decisions. In this paper, we examine how developers use these signals (or not) when making decisions about code contributions. To evaluate this question, we evaluate how signals related to perceived gender identity and code quality influenced decisions on accepting pull requests. Unlike previous work, we analyze this decision process with data collected from an eye-tracker. We analyzed differences in what signals developers said are important for themselves versus what signals they actually used to make decisions about others. We found that after the code snippet ((x) over bar = 57%), the second place programmers spent their time fixating is on supplemental technical signals ((x) over bar = 32%), such as previous contributions and popular repositories. Diverging from what participants reported themselves, we also found that programmers fixated on social signals more than recalled.

This WIP describes the challenges faced by the SoftHum (Student Participation in the Community of open source software for Humanity) project in incorporating undergraduates in Humanitarian Free and open source software (H-FOSS) projects. The goal of SoftHum is to develop course-level support for the use of H-FOSS as a foundation for software engineering education. Such support will take the form of course materials and a process to support student success in a community-based software experience using H-FOSS, and the documentation of a classroom environment that supports student open source experience. We present a brief overview of the project, discuss the challenges we face in involving students in H-FOSS projects, and present our current progress.

People write more code than they ever share online. They also copy and tweak code more often than they contribute their modifications back to the public. These situations can lead to widespread duplication of effort. However, the copy-modify-publish feedback loop which could solve the problem is inhibited by the effort required to publish code online. In this paper we present our preliminary, ongoing effort to create Ditty, a programming environment that attacks the problem by sharing changes immediately, making all code public by default. Ditty tracks the changes users make to code they find and exposes the modified versions alongside the original so that commonly-used derivatives can eventually become canonical. Our work will examine mechanical and social methods to consolidate global effort on common code snippets, and the effects of designing a programming interface that inspires a feeling of the whole world programming together.

The process by which norms are developed to become policies, the normative decision-making process, is not often explicit to stakeholders of open source software (OSS) projects. Understanding the normative decision-making process is crucial for members if such projects are to evolve and succeed. In this paper, we investigated aspects of the normative decision-making processes of OSS development through the use of Python Enhancement Proposals (PEPs). We compared extracted process models with those that are advertised by the Python community to evaluate the extent to which those processes overlap. In addition, we assess members' involvement and contribution to these processes. Our work used structural and behavioral analysis techniques, and social network analysis metrics. We found that there were differences between the extracted processes and Python's advertised process, with the extracted processes being significantly more complex. These differences also extended to granular models used for managing social and technical aspects of the Python project. Furthermore, some key members were largely responsible for PEPs' success. Our extracted models could go a far way in helping the Python community to quickly understand decision-making processes in Python.

The identification and management of users' requirements have been a persistent challenge confronting software development projects for decades. Complicating this challenge, research on requirements engineering processes has failed to keep pace with significant changes in the lived practice of software development. In this paper, we consider requirements-oriented processes as a socio-technical computational task in which diverse individuals and artifacts collaboratively "compute" the requirements for an envisioned software resource. Through the perspective of distributed cognition, we analyze the distributed requirements activities of three information systems development projects, each representing a distinct development methodology - structured development, agile development, and open source software development. We construct models of the computational structures of these projects to support a novel analytical basis for comparison and contrast of requirements-oriented efforts in these development methodologies.

open source software (OSS) has gained high amount of popularity during the last few years. It is becoming used by public and private institutions, even companies release portions of their code to obtain feedback from the community of voluntary developers. As OSS is based on the voluntary contributions of developers, the number of participants represents one of the key elements that impact the quality of the software. In order to understand how the the population of contributors evolve over time, we propose a methodology that adapts Lotka-Volterra-based biological models used for describing host-parasite interactions. Experiments based on data from the Github collaborative platform showed that the proposed approach performs effectively in terms of providing an estimation of the population of developers for each project over time.

open source software (OSS) has been studied as a popular example of open innovation. Models used in open software development are innovative in several ways, to the point that they are only recognized as valid models at all since they have actually produced mature and stable software more in a swift fashion. Some studies attempt to answer the OSS's development model, way to produce the quality products and distributed development model driven by motivated voluntary developers found in OSS. However, they are usually focused on handful projects and often miss to represent the whole world of OSS development. We analyze FLOSSMetrics database and sourceForge repository. By examining these, we attempt to identify 1) factual landscape of OSS projects, 2) correlation between different measures including developers' activities and consumers' interests. This analysis is also supplemented by empirical research on world re-known OSS projects to identify the implication of vendor-led OSS projects. We find that OSS projects are hardly to be seen as loci of future open innovation in several ways. We also conclude that prior belief which altruistic developers donating time and effort for the common good is highly romanticized view of open source software.

This paper introduces a tool called CCT (Code Clone Tracer) which is designed to help practitioners and researchers analyze the impacts of human/social factors on software quality in creating and reusing code clones. CCT tracks a history of created and reused code clones for all the revisions in a distributed version control system such as Git. The tool also has features to analyze the relationship between bug-inducing changes and developers, working together with a bug tracking system such as Bugzilla and JIRA. This paper reports our pilot case study where CCT is applied to three open source projects (RxJava, c:geo, and Jackson databind). The results of the case study indicated that a small number of particular developers were involved in many of clone changes to resolve issues.

Anonymous course evaluation is an important instrument for assessing teaching effectiveness and maintaining the quality of academic programs. At many universities a significant amount of resources and staff time is spent on preparation, distribution and collection of confidential end-of-semester evaluations. To minimize manual processing and improve the speed, accuracy, and effectiveness of this task, the authors have developed an open-source;web-based electronic course evaluation system called IU-EVAL. The system was tested by approximately 19,500 students between August 1, 2004, and May 30, 2006. In this paper we describe some of the design principles and strategies behind the development of IU-EVAL as open-source software.

Context: Contributors to open source software (OSS) development projects use social media to discuss personal and work-related issues. While there has been some interest in studying social media posts of developers, the investigation of the use of this medium by core contributors has not received much attention. Such an investigation could be useful given the technical and social insights such members bring to their team's development. Objective: To bridge this gap, we have investigated Python core developers' posts on Twitter. Method: We systematically collected 27,805 tweets from 80 core developers' Twitter accounts of which 3,282 (11.8%) were relevant to Python development. We performed multiple forms of analyses on these tweets, involving bottom-up thematic analysis on three levels (topics, questions and answers, and decision-making). We also conducted social network analysis of the topics of interest of core developers. Results: Core developers' Python-related tweets fall under 23 different topics (in 5 higher-level topic categories). The top two categories were software-related and community-related tweets. Core developers also used Twitter as a medium to discuss technical issues related to Python software development in the form of questions and answers (Q&As) to a large extent (45% of the tweets). Moreover, this informal medium is also used for decision-making 2% of the time, supplementing the formal channels of decision-making (i.e., mailing lists). Additionally, we have identified five different groups of core developers based on their topic interests. Conclusion: Although informal in nature, social media platforms provide another window, beyond formal project repositories, for understanding OSS ecosystems. Consequently, informal sources must be integrated with formal sources to obtain a comprehensive view of OSS development activities.
