As a new phenomenon of the software industry, open source software (OSS) development has attracted many research interests. Examining what motivate participants to be involved in OSS projects is one of the recently heated research areas. This study is motivated by the significance but lacking evidence on how personality traits may affect participants' task effort on OSS projects. In particular, we investigate how personality traits namely psychological needs for autonomy and competence, and one's altruism interact with motivations. Following Self-Determination Theory, we differentiate types of motivation in OSS communities. In addition, drawing upon the Affective Event theory, we submit that personality traits moderate the relationships between task effort and both external and identified motivations. The research model is largely supported by data from 204 participants in various OSS projects. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.

Purpose - software development life cycle (SDLC) has always been the core methodology for any software engineer that depicts the entire development process which an organization is bound to utilize to achieve successful software. The purpose of this paper is to bring forth a conceptual model after analysing the best practices in SDLC, and extracting the best out of agile methodologies and the open source software, thereby bringing forward an optimised structure. Design/methodology/approach - The OASDLC is hypothesized specifically for "Brihaspati" project and is formulated keeping in mind the gaps and limitations posed by existing SDLC models. OASDLC is further put to test for achieving lower costs and efforts involved. The tests are further substantiated by means of hypothesis validation through execution of a survey based research. Findings - It has been observed that the present conceptual model further optimizes the efforts involved while adopting such a practice. Originality/value - This paper proposes a novel SDLC model so as to achieve a best practice for a software project. On analysing the issues involved such as tight budget and timelines, it led the authors to formulate a newer concept "open Agile software development Life Cycle model" (OASDLC).

Usability and user experience (UX) issues are often not well emphasized and addressed in open source software (OSS) development. There is an imperative need for supporting OSS communities to collaboratively identify, understand, and fix UX design issues in a distributed environment. In this paper, we provide an initial step towards this effort and report on an exploratory study that investigated how the OSS communities currently reported, discussed, negotiated, and eventually addressed usability and UX issues. We conducted in-depth qualitative analysis of selected issue tracking threads from three OSS projects hosted on GitHub. Our findings indicated that discussions about usability and UX issues in OSS communities were largely influenced by the personal opinions and experiences of the participants. Moreover, the characteristics of the community may have greatly affected the focus of such discussion.

Over the past several years, crowdsourcing has entered software engineering practice. While most work is still done through traditional development, contract development, and outsourcing, software projects today increasingly use crowdsourcing for a variety of purposes, including fixing defects, testing their software, or gathering alternative designs for a new user interface. Through mechanisms such as competition sites, expertise sharing sites, bug bounties, and online labor markets, crowdsourcing has begun to reshape the ways in which developers contribute to software projects. This talk explores the models of crowdsourcing that have been applied to software development to date and outlines some of the opportunities that exist for the future.

Crowdsourcing has had extraordinary success in solving a diverse set of problems, ranging from digitization of libraries and translation of the Internet, to scientific challenges such as classifying elements in the galaxy or determining the 3D shape of an enzyme. By leveraging the power of the masses, it is feasible to complete tasks in mere days and sometimes even hours, and to take on tasks that were previously impossible because of their sheer scale. Underlying the success of crowdsourcing is a common theme - the microtask. By breaking down the overall task at hand into microtasks providing short, self-contained pieces of work, work can be performed independently, quickly, and in parallel - enabling numerous and often untrained participants to chip in. This paper puts forth a research agenda, examining the question of whether the same kinds of successes that microtask crowdsourcing is having in revolutionizing other domains can be brought to software development. That is, we ask whether it is possible to push well beyond the open source paradigm, which still relies on traditional, coarse-grained tasks, to a model in which programming proceeds through microtasks performed by vast numbers of crowd developers.

In this paper we present the development of a collaborative community using exclusively open source software. After the definition of the functional requirements of the project, we focus on finding specific software components to satisfy these requirements. The intention was to minimize the development effort and labor, relying on open source software. As a result, the platform was developed writing less than 10% of the required code and reusing more than 20 software components, not counting the software dependencies. The new components developed form our contribution to the community.

software reliability growth models (SRGMs) proposed on the foundations of Non-Homogenous Poisson Process (NHPP) have been the most accepted way to analyze reliability growth of a software since 1970's. Henceforth, Literature witnesses the evolution of SRGMs in terms of different assumptions, parameters, performance etc. This study is an attempt to model reliability growth phenomenon for open source software (OSS). As the development process followed by OSS significantly differs from proprietary software, traditional software engineering SDLC models can't be followed for its development. OSS development procedure does not incorporate a dedicated testing phase and therefore negligible effort expenditure is done on testing of software prior its release. The volume of volunteer participation in its operational phase thus becomes a significant criterion in the representation of its reliability growth. Also, the impact of sudden changes in fault detection process (change-point) due to several reasons like variations in fault density, irregular team size, volunteer expertise etc is captured in proposed SRGM. This paper suggests a reliability model based on user growth with the concept of change point to better cater the heterogeneity in software failure process. Failure data of GNOME 2.0 is used in this paper reliability growth analysis. Unknown parameters are estimated using Least Square Estimation regression technique. Performance inspection of proposed SRGM is carried out using goodness-of-fit criteria like Mean square error (MSE), Coefficient of Determination (R-2), Predictive Ratio Risk (PRR), and Predictive Power (PP). The study recommends that introduction of the change-point in SRGM improves prediction capability of the model and hence establishes an evidence of its applicability.

The attraction of new developers is a key challenge for initiatives developing Free Libre open source software (FLOSS). While previous evaluations consider status gains and competence evaluations to be key drivers for novices' joining behavior, it is unclear how FLOSS developers' relationships with others affect the attraction of new developers. In this research, we look at FLOSS developers' relationships in terms of positive evaluations given by others. Using this perspective, we examine how FLOSS developers' reputation among members within and beyond the project community affects their projects' ability to attract new developers. We draw on Social Resource Theory (SRT) and hypothesize that developers with a high reputation among others enjoy high visibility and credibility, which in turn helps their projects to attract new members. Finally, we propose an evaluation approach for our research model that examines the reputation and project behavior of more than 1,000 FLOSS developers on a longitudinal base.

Testing plug-in-based systems is challenging due to complex interactions among many different plug-ins, and variations in version and configuration. The objective of this paper is to increase our understanding of what testers and developers think and do when it comes to testing plug-in-based systems. To that end, we conduct a qualitative (grounded theory) study, in which we interview 25 senior practitioners about how they test plug-in applications based on the Eclipse plug-in architecture. The outcome is an overview of the testing practices currently used, a set of identified barriers limiting test adoption, and an explanation of how limited testing is compensated by self-hosting of projects and by involving the community. These results are supported by a structured survey of more than 150 professionals. The study reveals that unit testing plays a key role, whereas plug-in specific integration problems are identified and resolved by the community. Based on our findings, we propose a series of recommendations and areas for future research.

In open source software (OSS) development domain (a largely volunteer driven, geographically distributed, web based form of software development), it is mainly the OSS developers who are responsible for overseeing and managing the developmental activities. Existing OSS literature, based on qualitative analysis of web-based artifacts (e.g. data on discussion forums, issue databases) of a few OSS projects, report that requirements generation in OSS development is largely informal and ad hoc. But there is lack of an empirical study involving the practitioners themselves i.e. the OSS developers. We conducted a web-based survey among OSS developers in order to gain insights in to how they actually practice requirements engineering activities and what are their perceptions about it. For 57 requirements engineering practices obtained from closed source software development (CSSD) literature, the respondents indicated whether they currently used those practices in their OSS projects and whether those practices were useful for OSS development. The analysis of survey responses revealed that OSS developers used requirements engineering practices (from CSSD) significantly less in their developmental activities than what they believed they should have, indicated through usefulness ratings. We also asked participating OSS developers to indicate their perceptions about the usage of five informal requirements generation activities reported in OSS literature (e.g. developers simply asserting the requirements instead of eliciting). Subsequent analysis revealed that OSS developers used informal requirements generation activities significantly more than requirements elicitation practices (from CSSD) in their developmental activities. We use the survey findings to discuss implications for practice and research.
