Context: During the implementation of issues filed in open source software projects, programmers engage and interact in discussions on how to implement them. These discussions provide evidence to investigate emotionally loaded practices embraced by programmers. They interact to explain their point of view regarding the project and the issue under analysis. Objective: Analyze programmers sentiment polarity in an open source software project having releases as a reference for the analysis. Methods: We conducted an exploratory study to characterize the sentiment polarity of comments registered in issues associated with releases of the Moby open source software project. Results: The quantitative analysis identified sentiment polarity variations throughout consecutive releases in line with specific functionalities. Based on a qualitative analysis, we identified these functionalities and specific group of programmers that contributed to those results. Conclusions: We identified initial evidence to contribute for the understanding of the causes underlying the influence of the sentiments of the developers in the context of releases of open source software projects.

We apply survival analysis methods to a dataset of publicly-available software projects in order to examine the attributes that might lead to their inactivity over time. We ran a Kaplan-Meier analysis and fit a Cox Proportional-Hazards model to a subset of software Heritage Graph Dataset, consisting of 3052 popular Python projects hosted on GitLab/GitHub, Debian, and PyPI, over a period of 165 months. We show that projects with repositories on multiple hosting services, a timeline of publishing major releases, and a good network of developers, remain healthy over time and should be worthy of the effort put in by developers and contributors.

In globally distributed software development, many software developers have to collaborate and deal with issues of collaboration. Although collaboration is challenging, collaborative development produces better software than any developer could produce alone. Unlike previous work which focuses on the proposal and evaluation of models and tools to support collaborative work, this paper presents an interview study aiming to understand (i) the motivations, (ii) how collaboration happens, and (iii) the challenges and barriers of collaborative software development. After interviewing twelve experienced software developers from GitHub, we found different types of collaborative contributions, such as in the management of requests for changes. Our analysis also indicates that the main barriers for collaboration are related to non-technical, rather than technical issues.

software size measurement and effort estimation methodologies in use today usually take the detailed requirements of software to be developed as the primary input and a certain amount of time and expertise is needed for size measurement. This paper analyzes the open source projects' correlations between the problem domain measures (the number of nouns and verbs) and solution domain measures (the number of software classes and methods). In this paper, 27 open source software projects are analyzed. Linear regression and cross validation techniques are applied to investigate the relation between the sizes of problem domain (i.e., conceptual) and solution domain (i.e., design) measures. The results reveal a strong correlation between the problem domain measures and the solution domain measures constituting the corresponding software. The results suggest that it is possible to use problem domain descriptions in the early stages of software development projects to make plausible predictions for the size and effort of the software.

software usage by end-users is one of the factors used to evaluate the success of software projects. In the context of open source software, there is no single and non-controversial measure of usage, though. Still, one of the most used and readily available measure is data about projects downloads. Nevertheless, download counts and averages do not convey as much information as the patterns in the original downloads time series. In this research, we propose a method to increase the expressiveness of mere download rates by considering download patterns against software releases. We apply experimentally our method to the most downloaded projects of source Forge's history crawled through the FLOSSMole repository. Findings show that projects with similar usage can have indeed different levels of sensitivity to releases, revealing different behaviors of users. Future research will develop further the pattern recognition approach to automatically categorize open source projects according to their download patterns.

The success of open source software (OSS) projects heavily depends on sustained participation of project members. However, turnover of members and the ensuing instability have become very common. To better understand the turnover of members in OSS projects, we base our study on Herzberg's two-factor theory to investigate whether hygiene factors will lead to members' dissatisfaction. At the same time, we draw on Mobley's model of withdrawal decision process to hypothesize the relationship between dissatisfaction and perceived turnover. We develop a research model and present hypotheses that should be tested in the future. To empirically assess this model, we intend to survey OSS project members through the largest development platform sourceforge. This study will provide a new insight into how the turnover of members emerges in OSS projects. The findings of this progressive research will have implications for both practice and theory.

Context: The need to accelerate software delivery, supporting faster time-to-market and frequent community developer/user feedback are issues that have led to relevant changes in software development practices. One example is the adoption of Rapid Release (RR) by several open source software projects (OSS). This raises the need to know how these projects deal with software release approaches. Goal: Identify the main characteristics of software release initiatives in OSS projects, the motivations behind their adoption, strategies applied, as well as advantages and difficulties found. Method: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to reach the stated goal. Results: The SLR includes 33 publications from January 2006 to July 2016 and reveals nine advantages that characterize software release approaches in OSS projects;four challenge issues;three possibilities of implementation and two main motivations towards the adoption of RR;and finally four main strategies to implement it. Conclusion: This study provides an up-to-date and structured understanding of the software release approaches in the context of OSS projects based on findings systematically collected from a list of relevant references in the last decade.

Knowledge sharing in open source software communities: motivations and management

Purpose - This paper aims to add to the understanding of knowledge sharing in online communities through an investigation of the relationship between individual participant's motivations and management in open source software (OSS) communities. Drawing on a review of literature concerning knowledge sharing in organisations, the factors that motivate participants to share their knowledge in OSS communities, and the management of such communities, it is hypothesised that the quality of management influences the extent to which the motivations of members actually result in knowledge sharing. Design/methodology/approach - To test the hypothesis, quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire survey of OSS web developers with the aim of gathering respondents' opinions concerning knowledge sharing, motivations to share knowledge and satisfaction with the management of OSS projects. Factor analysis, descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to explore the survey data. Findings - The analysis of the data reveals that the individual participant's satisfaction with the management of an OSS project is an important factor influencing the extent of their personal contribution to a community. Originality/value - Little attention has been devoted to understanding the impact of management in OSS communities. Focused on OSS developers specialising in web development, the findings of this paper offer an important original contribution to understanding the connections between individual members' satisfaction with management and their motivations to contribute to an OSS project. The findings reveal that motivations to share knowledge in online communities are influenced by the quality of management. Consequently, the findings suggest that appropriate management can enhance knowledge sharing in OSS projects and online communities, and organisations more generally.

An empirical study of FOSS developers patterns of contribution: Challenges for data linkage and analysis

The majority of Free and open source software (FOSS) developers are mobile and often use different identities in the projects or communities they participate in. These characteristics pose challenges for researchers studying the presence and contributions of developers across multiple repositories. In this paper, we present a methodology, employ various statistical measures, and leverage Bayesian networks to study the patterns of contribution of 502 developers in both Version Control System (VCS) and mailing list repositories in 20 GNOME projects. Our findings shows that only a small percentage of developers are contributing to both repositories and this cohort is making more commits than they are posting messages to mailing lists. The implications of these findings for understanding the patterns of contribution in FOSS projects and on the quality of the final product are discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
