Side-channel analysis against ANSSI's protected AES implementation on ARM: end-to-end attacks with multi-task learning

In 2019, ANSSI released a protected software implementation of AES running on an STM32 platform with ARM Cortex-M architecture, publicly available on Github. The release of the code was shortly followed by a first paper written by Bronchain and Standaert at Ches 2020, analyzing the security of the implementation and proposing some attacks. In order to propose fair comparisons for future attacks on this target device, this paper aims at presenting a new publicly available dataset, called ASCADv2 based on this implementation. Along with the dataset, we also provide a benchmark of deep learning based side-channel attacks, thereby extending the works of Bronchain and Standaert. Our attacks revisit and leverage the multi-task learning approach, introduced by Maghrebi in 2020, in order to efficiently target several intermediate computations at the same time. We hope that this work will draw the community's interest toward the evaluation of highly protected software AES, whereas some of the current public SCA datasets are nowadays reputed to be less and less challenging.

From "Think Like a Vertex" to "Think Like a Graph"

To meet the challenge of processing rapidly growing graph and network data created by modern applications, a number of distributed graph processing systems have emerged, such as Pregel and GraphLab. All these systems divide input graphs into partitions, and employ a "think like a vertex" programming model to support iterative graph computation. This vertex-centric model is easy to program and has been proved useful for many graph algorithms. However, this model hides the partitioning information from the users, thus prevents many algorithm-specific optimizations. This often results in longer execution time due to excessive network messages (e.g. in Pregel) or heavy scheduling overhead to ensure data consistency (e.g. in GraphLab). To address this limitation, we propose a new "think like a graph" programming paradigm. Under this graph-centric model, the partition structure is opened up to the users, and can be utilized so that communication within a partition can bypass the heavy message passing or scheduling machinery. We implemented this model in a new system, called Giraph++, based on Apache Giraph, an open source implementation of Pregel. We explore the applicability of the graph-centric model to three categories of graph algorithms, and demonstrate its flexibility and superior performance, especially on well-partitioned data. For example, on a web graph with 118 million vertices and 855 million edges, the graph-centric version of connected component detection algorithm runs 63X faster and uses 204X fewer network messages than its vertex- centric counterpart.

epiC: an Extensible and Scalable System for Processing Big Data

The Big Data problem is characterized by the so-called 3V features: volume - a huge amount of data, velocity - a high data ingestion rate, and variety - a mix of structured data, semi-structured data, and unstructured data. The state-of-the-art solutions to the Big Data problem are largely based on the MapReduce framework (aka its open source implementation Hadoop). Although Hadoop handles the data volume challenge successfully, it does not deal with the data variety well since the programming interfaces and its associated data processing model are inconvenient and inefficient for handling structured data and graph data. This paper presents epiC, an extensible system to tackle the Big Datas data variety challenge. epiC introduces a general Actor-like concurrent programming model, independent of the data processing models, for specifying parallel computations. Users process multi-structured datasets with appropriate epiC extensions, and the implementation of a data processing model best suited for the data type and auxiliary code for mapping that data processing model into epiCs concurrent programming model. Like Hadoop, programs written in this way can be automatically parallelized and the runtime system takes care of fault tolerance and inter-machine communications. We present the design and implementation of epiCs concurrent programming model. We also present two customized data processing models, an optimized MapReduce extension and a relational model, on top of epiC. We show how users can leverage epiC to process heterogeneous data by linking different types of operators together. To improve the performance of complex analytic jobs, epiC supports a partition-based optimization technique where data are streamed between the operators to avoid the high I/O overheads. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed epiC.

Block Condensing for Fast Nonlinear MPC with the Dual Newton Strategy

A recently proposed quadratic programming (QP) solver dedicated to bandstructured optimal control problems as they may arise in the field of model predictive control (MPC) is the dual Newton strategy, as implemented in the publicly available software qpDUNES. Such a structure-exploiting solver is often preferable over the use of condensing for problems with long horizons. In this paper, we propose an effcient and exible algorithm for real-time nonlinear MPC which tries to combine the advantages of the two approaches by means of a block condensing technique. Using a nontrivial benchmarking problem, we show that this approach can improve the performance of the dual Newton strategy by a factor of 10 in terms of total computation times while reducing the delay between state estimate and feedback even further. Additionally, an open-source implementation of the resulting scheme is provided as part of the ACADO code generation tool. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents the description and experimental results of a versatile Visual Marker based Multi-Sensor Fusion State Estimation that allows to combine a variable optional number of sensors and positioning algorithms in a loosely-coupling fashion, incorporating visual markers to increase its performances. This technique allows an aerial robot to navigate in different environments and carrying out different missions with the same state estimation architecture, exploiting the best from every sensor. The state estimation algorithm has been successfully tested controlling a quadrotor equipped with an extra IMU and a RGB camera used only to detect visual markers. The entire framework runs on an onboard computer, including the controllers and the proposed state estimator. The whole software is made publicly available to the scientific community through an open source implementation. © 2017

Cooperative communications is an innovative technique that is expected to change the behavior of wireless networks in the near feature. In the MAC layer, this technique defines new protocols by enabling additional collaboration from stations that otherwise will not directly participate in the transmission. A typical example of such a protocol is CoopMAC [1], a cooperative MAC protocol that involves an intermediate station or helper in the communication between a transmitter and a receiver. Under this scheme, the transmitter sends its packets to the receiver by forwarding them through the helper. In this way the protocol takes advantage of spatial diversity and faster two-hop transmission, significantly improving the performance of the network. In such an environment, where the sender relies on an intermediate helper to forward its packets to the original destination, numerous security issues may arise. The present security schemes need to be adapted in order to support end-to-end security in the source-helper-destination communication model. In this paper we discuss the potential security issues that cooperation may raise and propose two new security schemes to address those concerns. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed algorithms, we implement them using open source drivers platform, which is explained in the paper in detail. Moreover, the paper also discusses the design challenges encounterd and share the experience and insights gained during implementation. Our implementations of the suggested techniques allow the WEP, WPA and WPA2 (802.11i) security protocols to successfully operate in the new cooperative environment.(1).

Recognizing handwritten mathematical content in classroom videos poses a range of interesting challenges. In this paper, we focus on improving the character recognition accuracy in such videos using a combination of video and audio based text recognizers. We propose a two step assembly consisting of a video text recognizer (VTR) as the primary character recognizer and an audio text recognizer (ATR) for disambiguating, if needed, the output of the VTR. We propose techniques for (1) detecting ambiguity in the output of the VTR so that a combination with the ATR may be triggered only for ambiguous characters, (2) synchronizing the output of the two recognizers for enabling combination, and (3) combining the options generated by the two recognizers using measurement and rank based methods. We have implemented the system using an open source implementation of a character recognizer and a commercially available phonetic word-spotter. Through experiments conducted using video recorded in a classroom-like environment, we demonstrate the improvement in the character recognition accuracy that can be achieved using our approach.

Educational remote laboratories are software and hardware tools that allow students to remotely access real equipment located in universities as if they were in a hands-on-lab session. Federations of these remote laboratories have existed for years, focused on allowing two universities to share their equipment. Additionally, the integration of remote laboratories in Learning Tools - LT- (Learning Management Systems, Content Management Systems or Personal Learning Environments) has been achieved in the past in order to integrate remote laboratories as part of the learning curricula, being part of the practice exercises or even as a tool of evaluation. An cross-institutional initiative called gateway4labs has been created to perform this integration through federation protocols. In this contribution, this initiative adds support for openSocial as a new protocol for Learning Tools (in particular, for EPFL Graasp), as well as for the iLab Shared Architecture (in addition to WebLab-Deusto and UNR FCEIA laboratories already supported). Supporting openSocial opens a number of new technical and organizational challenges since public labs should be supported without registering students, teachers or schools. The focus of this contribution is to show these challenges and how they are tackled in the proposed open source implementation.
