An open-source framework for the multi-objective optimization of passive micromixer based on RSM and MOEA/D

Balancing the mixing index, pressure drop and mixing energy consumption is crucial for enhancing the performance of passive micromixers. In this paper, a T-shaped micromixer scheme integrating cylindrical obstacles and contraction-expansion parts is proposed and the geometric parameters are studied in order to achieve multi-objective optimization. The geometry of the micromixer is optimized by selecting three design variables (L1, L2 and Dcy), where L1 and L2 are used to adjust the changes in the cross section of the flow channel and Dcy controls the diameter of the cylindrical obstacle. For different Reynolds numbers (0.1 and 100), COMSOL simulation and Box-Behnken experiment design are used to evaluate the effects of each design variable on the mixing evaluation indicators. The findings indicate that L2 exerts the most substantial influence on the performance of the micromixer. It can effectively modify the width of the flow channel, thereby optimizing the fluid velocity and concentration gradient, and consequently having a significant impact on mixing evaluation indicators. Regarding multi-objective optimization, the decomposition based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA/D) is used to construct the Pareto optimal solution. This algorithm offers a balanced scheme between different mixing evaluation indicators. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimized micromixer can not only enhances the mixing index but also remarkably reduces the pressure drop. It can achieve a complete mixing effect while reducing the pressure drop by nearly 41% compared to the passive micromixer using two-layer serpentine crossing channels when Re = 100, which is especially suitable for microfluidic applications such as biochemical detection. Furthermore, this study makes the MATLAB program source code used in the calculation process publicly available, which provides a strong support for the subsequent research and application.

With increased human mobility and the introduction of NPIs, the complex, dynamic spread of COVID-19 has diverged significantly from SEIR's single, static assumption. At the same time, the ability to obtain front-line data also limits the modeling capabilities of SEIR. For researchers who cannot program, they must find suitable collaborators to implement their research. Even for researchers who can program, they need to repeat the principle and application process of the infectious disease model. LibEpidemic provide an open-source framework for modeling infectious disease, especially COVID-19, with bigdata. Researchers can implement subdivided, multi-stage or even metapopulation with the support of LibEpidemic.

"shortCardiac"- An open-source framework for fast and standardized assessment of cardiac function

In medicine, especially in radiology, artificial intelligence has sparked a growing interest in automated systems, image analysis, and acquisition standardization. In the wake of this standardization, the research field of "radiomics"has gained importance. Using computer-aided analysis, image data and contours can be evaluated to determine numerical values for shape, size, and gray-scale texture, which can then be examined in a clinical context. Especially in cardiovascular imaging, data acquisition and analysis in different cardiac and respiratory phases are of great interest. However, most research studies use parameters that have been laboriously calculated by hand. "ShortCardiac"is a Python-based framework with a user-friendly GUI for the quantitative determination of cardiac MR parameters. This allows researchers to utilize quantitative MR research for their studies without programming knowledge, with just a few clicks. All calculated parameters can be displayed graphically. "shortCar-diac"allows the visualization of segmentation contours, the angle-dependent length measurement, the center of gravity and much more, in addition, the background can be hidden, and the images can be cropped automatically. In addition, "shortCardiac"can also be called via python and due to the object-oriented design, it is possible to integrate new segmentation frameworks with little effort in the future as well as to determine additional parameters. However, "ShortCardiac"comes with certain limitations. It only assesses cardiac short-axis data and functions merely as a post -processing framework for determining surrogate parameters based on segmentation and image information. Manual segmentations or usage of fully automated segmentations, such as Circle cvi42, require additional software tools. Digital real time simulators (DRTS) are increasingly being used for the evaluation of power hardware and controller hardware in the laboratory prior to field deployment. Although DRTS are capable of simulating large models in real-time, it is challenging to visualize the results of large models without overdrawing or confounding the viewer. This paper provides an open-source framework for users to visualize their DRTS-based hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental results in real-time. This proposed framework can be used by experimental test beds that can push data through an internet protocol based network. The proposed framework includes three main components. First, it includes the DRTS that generates and pushes the data to a relay. Second, it includes an application that serves multiple purposes, from data storage, testing, and translation of the data to a publisher/subscriber protocol. Finally, it includes libraries and applications that can be used to visualize the data by subscribing to the relay. This framework is available in open source, and it is tested using the HIL platform developed for testing advanced distribution management systems.

Regional seismic damage simulation of buildings provides decision-makers with important information for earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation. Utilizing nonlinear time history analysis using multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) models for buildings, and the next-generation performance-based earthquake engineering, an open-source general-purpose scientific workflow for seismic damage simulation and loss prediction of urban buildings (referred to as SimCenter Workflow) is presented in this study. To introduce the SimCenter Workflow process in detail and demonstrate its advantages, a seismic damage simulation and loss prediction for 1.8 million buildings in the San Francisco Bay Area were performed using the SimCenter Workflow. The open nature and modularization of the SimCenter Workflow facilitate its extensibility and make it practical for researchers to apply to seismic damage simulations in other regions.

The application of machine and deep learning algorithms in Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has shown great potential for monitoring various professional and daily life activities, benefiting different research areas such as healthcare, well-being and industrial automation. HAR can enable the development of various services and applications to empower technical performance and enable risk prevention in working places, to support education and training, and, more in general, to monitor the biopsychosocial status of people. However, we still lack a baseline framework for easily implementing the data processing pipeline that must be designed to setup and configure HAR workflows. This makes challenging to estimate the effectiveness, efficiency, and the overall quality of HAR solutions, thus hindering the comparison among different approaches. This also increases the likelihood that researchers introduce errors, which negatively affect the accuracy of the obtained results. To fill in the gap, this paper introduces B-HAR, an open-source framework to automatically implement baseline HAR workflows.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) plays a pivotal role in diverse fields such as healthcare, performance monitoring, and risk prevention, employing Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms. This paper introduces B-HAR (Baseline-HAR), an open-source framework based on Service-Oriented Architecture to facilitate the engineering and evaluation of different ML/DL-based HAR methodologies. By automating the creation and implementation of a baseline workflow, B-HAR enables researchers to assess and compare HAR methods effectively. It integrates prevalent data-processing techniques and popular machine and deep learning models, ensuring consistency in data preprocessing while allowing for custom model integration. The framework's efficacy is demonstrated across nine prominent HAR datasets, encompassing various sensor types and placements, showcasing its utility in engineering applications, particularly in healthcare, where it aids in diagnosis, rehabilitation, and treatment optimization for neurological and physiatric disorders, as well as assisting individuals with special needs.

Building the executive system of autonomous aerial robots using the Aerostack open-source framework

A variety of open-source software tools are currently available to help building autonomous mobile robots. These tools have proven their effectiveness in developing different types of robotic systems, but there are still needs related to safety and efficiency that are not sufficiently covered. This article describes recent advances in the Aerostack software framework to address part of these needs, which may become critical in the case of aerial robots. The article describes a software tool that helps to develop the executive system, an important component of the control architecture whose characteristics significantly affect the quality of the final autonomous robotic system. The presented tool uses an original solution for execution control that aims at simplifying mission specification and protecting against errors, considering also the efficiency needs of aerial robots. The effectiveness of the tool was evaluated by building an experimental autonomous robot. The results of the evaluation show that it provides significant benefits about usability and reliability with acceptable development effort and computational cost. The tool is based on Robot Operating System and it is publicly available as part of the last release of the Aerostack software framework (version 3.0).

Creating the Internet of Augmented Things: An open-source framework to Make IoT Devices and Augmented and Mixed Reality Systems Talk to Each Other

Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) devices have evolved significantly in the last years, providing immersive AR/MR experiences that allow users to interact with virtual elements placed on the real-world. However, to make AR/MR devices reach their full potential, it is necessary to go further and let them collaborate with the physical elements around them, including the objects that belong to the Internet of Things (IoT). Unfortunately, AR/MR and IoT devices usually make use of heterogeneous technologies that complicate their intercommunication. Moreover, the implementation of the intercommunication mechanisms requires involving specialized developers with have experience on the necessary technologies. To tackle such problems, this article proposes the use of a framework that makes it easy to integrate AR/MR and IoT devices, allowing them to communicate dynamically and in real time. The presented AR/MR-IoT framework makes use of standard and open-source protocols and tools like MQTT, HTTPS or Node-RED. After detailing the inner workings of the framework, it is illustrated its potential through a practical use case: a smart power socket that can be monitored and controlled through Microsoft HoloLens AR/MR glasses. The performance of such a practical use case is evaluated and it is demonstrated that the proposed framework, under normal operation conditions, enables to respond in less than 100 ms to interaction and data update requests.

In the past decade, the number of always-connected mobile devices exploded. Smartphones are always with the user and host a large number of applications and services that use notifications to gain the user's attention. These notifications and their effects on users have been extensively researched in the context of human-computer interaction. In a body of prior work, numerous small-and large-scale studies were conducted to understand notifications as well as their effects. A common theme in these studies is the need for accessing users' notifications, often for logging purposes. In this paper, we present an open-source framework for notification research on mobile devices. The framework has been used as the foundation of multiple in-the-wild and in-lab studies, and has been downloaded by over 60,000 users. We explain the requirements, the architecture, and past application scenarios of the framework. The scenarios range from enabling reflection on mobile notifications to rich experiences in multi-device environments.
