controller performance and behavior are key to the operation of an SDN network. Therefore, choosing the right controller implementation and corresponding set of applications is essential. In order to facilitate this decision we previously introduced a tool for controller performance analysis called "OFCBenchmark". In this paper, we present "OFCProbe" a platform-independent and extended re-design of our original approach. We describe the new architecture and explain the implemented features. Finally, we provide some sample results to illustrate the kind of investigations that can be performed using the tool.

openflow, as an open-source protocol with prominent performance of networking virtualization and programmability, has been gradually introduced to act as a control plane technology in optical networks. However, with the increasing of the complexity of the network architecture and the service kinds, a centralized Opel-flow-based software-defined networking (SDN) control plane has a major drawback that its capacity is limited for processing the service requests in the scenario with high traffic intensity. In this paper, we propose a control plane architecture implemented with dual-PCE and openflow controller to serve the dynamic services from a twofold computation abilities in flexi-grid optical network. We demonstrate the performance of this architecture by introducing the work procedures and coordination mechanisms of our control plane. Our numeric results show that when the traffic intensity is over 400 Erlang, the blocking probability declines about 45% comparing with the control plane integrated one PCE.

Modern computer networks' increasing complexity and scale need serious attention towards network anomaly detection. Software-defined networking (SDN) and graph neural networks (GNN) have emerged as promising approaches for anomaly detection due to their ability to capture dynamic network behavior and learn complex patterns from large-scale network data. The amalgamation of SDN and GNN for network anomaly detection presents promising opportunities for improving the accuracy and efficiency of network anomaly detection. This paper focuses on various trends, issues, and challenges by integrating GNN on the top of SDN for network anomaly detection. The article highlights the advantages of using SDN for providing fine-grained control and programmability in network monitoring. At the same time, GNN can model network behavior as a graph and learn representations from graph-structured data. The authors also discuss the limitations of traditional anomaly detection methods in SDN, such as rule-based approaches, and the potential of GNN to overcome these limitations by leveraging their ability to capture non-linear and dynamic patterns in network data. This paper also presents a case study of DoS attack detection using SDN. The result shows that SDN based approach helps to detect attacks with an accuracy of 97% with future research directions.

In search of cluster-based routing protocol for WSN using consensus algorithm

The wireless sensor network (WSN) is a resource-constrained network type with two important challenges: energy consumption and network management. The goal of our design is to research and develop the WSN routing protocol, which is based on clusters and Open Flow controllers, in order to improve overall network performance. The results reveal that the proposed protocol is extensible and substantially more streamlined than standard soft computing-based implementations. These developments enable sensor networks to have a higher level of flexibility and programmability when placing sensors to the target. Our simulation results demonstrate that SDN extends network life by 20% when compared to traditional clustered-based routing by sending fewer control messages and using less processing resources once the initial processing is complete. The controller performs route computations rather than usual routing sensor nodes, which saves energy and extends the network's total lifetime.

The openflow architecture is a proposal from the Clean Slate initiative to define a new Internet architecture where the network devices are simple, and the control and management plane is performed by a centralized controller. The simplicity and centralization architecture makes it reliable and inexpensive, but the centralization causes problems concerning controller scalability. An openflow controller has two operations paradigm: reactive and proactive. This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate openflow controller performance. The performances of both paradigms were analyzed in different known controllers. The performance evaluation was done in a real environment and emulation. It was tested distinct openflow controller and using a different amount of openflow devices. Finally, we will present some conclusions about the controller scalability.

Using the openflow protocol, the virtual network technology SDN (Software Defined Network) is now widely used. In recent years, the number of DDoS attacks has been increasing year by year. To detect DDoS attacks in SDN, data recorded in the flow table in openflow switch is analyzed and various detection methods are submitted. However, SDN centrally manages communication within the network, when detecting DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. This creates a heavy processing load, and the processing load of the openflow controller must be considered. In this paper, in order to reduce the processing load of the controller, we do not collect data of the flow table, extract three features from the Packet In message for communication between the controller and the switch, and perform real-time attack detection. Furthermore, to avoid stringent detection time intervals, triggers will be added before detection to realize light and dynamic DDoS attacks detection.

Software-defined networks (SDNs) detach the forwarding plane from the control plane and communicate instruction sets between the separated planes via the openflow protocol. This arrangement solves some current challenges. However, it introduces challenges of its own that cut across security, scalability and lack of well-defined standards for northbound Application Programming Interfaces (API). This paper studies selected periodic control overheads exhibited by an operational openflow network, and makes comparisons with selected distributed protocols running on legacy network architectures. Results from our simulations show openflow generates significantly higher periodic control traffic (byte and packet count) when determining network state.

Mission-critical networks now interconnect datacenters, enterprise, customer sites and mobile entities. They thus must be resilient, adaptable and easily extensible. The emergence of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) protocols, which enables to decouple the control plane from the data plane, opens up new ways to architect such networks. In this paper, we propose DISCO, an extensible DIstributed SDN COntrol plane able to cope with the distributed and heterogeneous nature of modern mission-critical networks. DISCO controllers manage their own network domain and communicate with each others to provide end-to-end network services. This inter-controller communication is based on a lightweight and highly manageable pub-sub mechanism used by agents to self-adaptively share aggregated local and network-wide information. We implemented DISCO on top of Floodlight, an openflow controller, and the AMQP protocol. We demonstrated how DISCO's control plane dynamically adapts to heterogeneous network topologies while being resilient enough to survive to disruptions and attacks and providing classic functionalities such as end-point migration. The experimentation results we present are organized around two use cases: inter-domain connectivity disruption and migration of a virtual machine.

Software Defined Network (SDN) may significantly enhance network and service management by enabling separated control and data planes. The centralized openflow controller with a global vision of network states offers a promising approach to realizing flow-based admission control for supporting Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in SDN. However, per-flow process brings in challenges to scalability of openflow-based SDN. Flow aggregation has been explored as an effective method to address this issue. In this paper, we investigate admission control with flow aggregation for QoS provisioning in SDN. Specifically we propose a model for admission control with flow aggregation and develop the analysis techniques for determining the required amounts of bandwidth and buffer space at openflow-enabled switches for meeting performance requirements in delay and packet loss. Network calculus is applied in our modeling and analysis;which makes our method applicable to general openflow-based SDNs with various implementations. Numerical experiment results are also provided to evaluate effectiveness of the developed modeling and analysis techniques.
