With the emergence of cloud computing and Big Data, many companies are increasingly relying on the cloud to store and retrieve tremendous amounts of data to leverage the scalability and performance offered by cloud storage services. As a result, data retrieval time has become of a paramount importance for cloud users especially. However, current data management systems are still not optimized to reduce such time. In this paper, we present a deadline-aware data request scheduling scheme, called DA-Resch, that aims at scheduling data requests in order to minimize data transfer times and to meet the deadlines specified by the users. We show through real experiments using openstack storage system (i.e., swift) that, compared to the traditional swift Client system, DA-Resch significantly increases the percentage of requests meeting their deadlines, reduces data transfer time and maximizes bandwidth usage.

For the purposes of operating and managing complex cloud storage infrastructure, there is a need of monitoring it effectively and efficiently. Data is required to be collected from major components and analyzed for improving system performance and resource utilization. swift is an open source object storage cloud system by openstack, also popularly used by many key commercial cloud providers. In this paper, we present a detailed list of attributes required for monitoring swift storage infrastructure. We see that some of the processes associated with object storage need to be monitored and also resources the storage software utilizes for its working. We note that infrastructure associated with storage and its usage is required to be monitored constantly for providing better services. Accordingly, we categorize infrastructure monitoring into components and list parameters associated with them. Our monitoring list is beneficial for system administrator when selecting monitoring software for their system. During development of any new monitoring software, proposed monitoring list aids developer in selecting functionality in contrast to specifying fresh requirements.

Community Clouds, usually built upon community networks, operate in a more disperse environment compared to a data center Cloud, with lower capacity and less reliable servers separated by a more heterogeneous and less predictable network interconnection. These differences raise challenges when deploying Cloud applications in a community Cloud. openstack swift is an open source distributed storage system, which provides stand alone highly available and scalable storage from openstack Cloud computing components. swift is initially designed as a backend storage system operating in a data center Cloud environment. In this work, we illustrate the performance and sensitivity of openstack swift in a typical community Cloud setup. The evaluation of swift is conducted in a simulated environment, using the most essential environment parameters that distinguish a community Cloud environment from a data center Cloud environment.

The object storage systems are used to store and manage unstructured data. Most object storage systems provide the replication policy (REP) or erasure code policy (EC) to ensure the reliability and availability of data. In this paper, we study the trade-off between performance and storage efficiency of these policies with respect to different data sizes of user requests. To this end, we present a hybrid policy management system that takes advantage of both policies by automatically changing policy based on data size. We have implemented the hybrid system in openstack swift. Our evaluation results show the throughput of GET request increases up to 36% while improving storage efficiency by up to 53% compared to that using the REP policy.

We introduce a novel cloud storage service named Uspace supporting the concept of user-defined collaborative workspace which provides the functionality of inviting unregistered people as group members and assigning appropriate access rights to them. Uspace is developed by extending the swift storage service included in the openstack cloud computing system. In addition, Uspace provides a concurrency control service for coordinating resource accesses which is necessary for collaborative applications. As one of applications utilizing the Uspace service, we also present an Android application UspaceApp equipped with the features of shared whiteboards, group chats and file sharing among group members.

Strategizing secured image storing and efficient image retrieval through a new cloud framework

Nowadays, a major problem in faster page loading through optimizing websites is the absence of having images in their intended sizes. Accordingly, while loading a webpage, most of the time overhead pertains to image-related tasks such as image loading and resizing, which can be optimized substantially through the pre availability of smaller-size images. Therefore, in this study, we propose a strategy to enable faster and efficient image retrieval from a cloud via the necessary pre-processing of images beyond conventional online processing. We also extend the abilities of cloud file sharing from the conventional "only storing images"to pre-processing along with security reinforcing. Here, we perform the first task of resizing images to several dimensions for covering diversified remote user devices available nowadays. Then, we perform encoding and encryption of images using the P-Fibonacci transform of Discrete Cosine Coefficients (PFCC) algorithm. Afterward, we resize images using the Bicubic interpolation method to both JPEG and Progressive-JPEG (PJPEG) formats by adding a new middleware named iBuck for faster and smooth retrieval. We leverage necessary algorithms and image types after careful evaluation of their performances in our intended framework. Our evaluation covers both objective and subjective evaluations including QoE metrics such as MSE, SSIM, etc. Furthermore, we conduct detailed experimentation over real setups to evaluate the performance of our implemented middleware in a cloud file sharing environment with both custom and standard data sets. Our evaluation reveals substantial performance improvement using our proposed framework compared to that using conventional alternatives.

Cloud computing involves provision of computer resources as a service over the internet. This service can be provided to the customer on a leased basis, with the option to be scaled up or down based on the customer's requirements. Cloud Storage is a service, rendered to companies or users that allows data to be stored, maintained and accessed remotely. In this paper, a novel architecture to build an infrastructure of a secure and scalable cloud for a private organization is described. This architecture is designed using open source technologies and tools. This low-cost approach provides secure storage, upload and download of data, in a flexible mode at a reasonable price.

随着时代的发展,非结构化数据呈现爆炸式增长。IDC的一项调查报告中指出:非结构化数据在企业数据中,所占的比重是80%,并且还在以60%的比例增长。所以处理和存储海量的非结构化数据成为急需解决的问题,而云存储技术成为了解决这一问题的热点技术。现有的云存储系统主要是针对大文件设计的,并且没有考虑数据之间的关联性,然而大部分非结构化数据的文件大小小于2M,所以对于非结构化数据的存储效率是比较低下的。本文以非结构化数据为研究对象,基于开源云计算平台openstack的对象存储服务swift,提出了一种基于对象的存储方法,对非结构化数据进行存储设计和读取设计,并将这两种设计整合到swift的存储平台中,实现非结构化数据存储系统的开发,提高非结构化数据的存取性能。针对非结构化数据存储问题,本文研究了数据之间的关联性,然后将关联的数据作为输入,基于BIRCH算法对数据聚类,实现了对数据的分组。测试结果表明,代理节点的内存使用低于18MB,存储节点的内存使用低于15MB,相对于原来的swift系统,内存使用减少了大约86%。处理10KB左右的数据时,请求的响应时间降低大约50%。所以可以表明本文研究的方法可以有效的提高非结构化数据的存储效率。针对非结构化数据读取问题,本文研究数据与分组之间的映射信息,实现三个映射表:数据索引表、索引缓存表、工作集表。然后基于访问历史对数据进行预取操作,将接下来很有可能被访问的数据提前预取到代理节点的缓存中。测试结果表明,用户请求的数量为50个时,命中率达到50%。用户请求的数量超过350个时,命中率超过80%。同时降低了读取数据的响应时间,平均响应请求延迟低于20ms。所以可以表明本文研究的方法可以有效的提高非结构化数据的读取效率。基于上述成果,本文设计并实现基于swift的非结构化数据存储原型系统。该系统结合了非结构化数据的存储技术和读取技术。实验结果表明,该系统能够高效解决海量非结构化数据的存储问题和读取问题。

近几年随着互联网的快速发展以及企业信息化程度地不断提高,企业内部在业务快速增长和多样化的同时,数据也在持续不断地在增长。与此同时,针对企业市场的公有云存储和私有云存储都在蓬勃的发展,为企业的数据存储提供了多样化的选择。在这样一个背景下,选择适合企业内部的数据存储方案,以保证数据的安全稳定存储是企业业务发展的重要保障。公有云存储提供的接口是有限的,并且用户对于企业内部重要数据存储在公有云中心存疑虑,因为用户并不能直接定义数据的安全等级;而私有云存储则需要企业投入相当的成本才能建立起来并保持稳定运行。存储成本高,数据不安全,数据传递不便等都是阻碍企业发展的因素。针对上述问题,本文提出了基于混合云的企业共享存储系统。本文利用公有云存储的低成本和快速接入特点,结合私有云存储的可定制化,设计并实现了基于混合云存储企业内部的文件同步和共享系统。企业可以自定义数据存储的位置,将重要数据存储在私有云存储中以加强数据的安全,也可以根据业务需求的变化将数据在公有云存储和私有云存储之间迁移。企业内部的用户能方便地同步和共享文件,企业管理员以最直观的方式了解系统的运行状态。本文最后通过测试说明了系统在应用中的可行性和性能。
