In order to adapt to a rapid changes of manufacturing orders, flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) advances into the direction that machines become further versatile functionally and that tools are controlled by fast tool delivery device. Versatile machine can perform a variety of operations when it is supplied with the required tools. Tool management is among the essential elements in the successful operation of the FMS studied in this research. In this research, we propose an integrated model that performs operation sequence and tool selection simultaneously into the direction that minimizes tool waiting time when the tool is absent. The effectiveness of the model is demonstrated through a series of simulation experiments, and interpretations of the results are also presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reconfigurable manufacturing system is characterized by rapid and cost effective adaptation to the unscheduled and un-predictable changes in the market requirements through changeable functionality and scalable capacity around a part family. The design of RMS layout for catering to the product family requires an effective approach to group the parts based on operation sequence. In past the developed similarity coefficients suffer from the drawbacks. In the present work authors propose a BMIM (by passing moves and idle machines) similarity coefficient based on longest operation sequence. The superiority of the developed similarity coefficient is demonstrated through an illustration.

Cell formation is a crucial problem in the design of cellular manufacturing systems and has a decisive effect on productivity and cost. The similarity coefficient method is the most widely used to solve this problem because of its flexibility and computational efficiency. Although various similarity coefficient methods have been developed in the literature, few of these methods consider the factor of operation sequence with repeated operations, which may cause more material intercell movements. To fill this research gap, this study presents an improved similarity coefficient method for designing machine groups in the first stage. Subsequently, a modified part assignment strategy is proposed for forming cells to achieve a higher compatibility with the improved similarity coefficient method. Finally, problems from previous studies are employed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method. Comparison results testify that the proposed method is sensitive and efficient for solving the cell formation problem.

An energy-responsive optimization method for machine tool selection and operation sequence in flexible machining job shops

The environmental burden caused by energy consumption during the use phase of machine tool systems is widely acknowledged and hence ways must be found to use energy more efficiently. There is potentially a significant amount of energy savings that could be realized by selecting alternative machine tools and reducing the idle energy consumption through better scheduling. This paper proposes an energy-saving optimization method that considers machine tool selection and operation sequence for flexible job shops. The former seeks to reduce the energy consumption for machining operations, and the latter aims to reduce the idle energy consumption of machine tools. A mathematical model is formulated using mixed integer programming and the energy consumption objective is combined with a classical objective, the makespan. A Nested Partitions algorithm, which has proved to be robust for NP-hard problems, is utilized to solve the model. The proposed method is evaluated in a test case by two scenarios with different energy optimization schemes as well as the classical makespan objective. The results show that the proposed method is effective at realizing energy-savings for a flexible machining job shop. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The industrial sector of the twenty-first century faces a highly volatile market in which manufacturing systems must be capable of responding rapidly to the market changes, while fully exploiting resources. The reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a state of the art technology offering the exact functionality and capacity needed, which is built around a part family. The configuration of an RMS evolves over a period to justify the needs of upcoming part families. The foundation for the success of an RMS, therefore, lies in the recognition of appropriate sets of part families. In the present work the authors have developed a novel operation sequence based BMIM (bypassing moves and idle machines) similarity coefficient using longest common subsequence (LCS) and the minimum number of bypassing moves and the quantity of idle machines. The effectiveness of the developed similarity coefficient has been compared with the existing best similarity/dissimilarity coefficients available in the existing literature. An example set of parts has been classified using the developed similarity coefficient and average linkage hierarchical clustering algorithm. The developed approach can also be used very effectively for part family formation in the cellular manufacturing system.

Enhancing the performance of a zeolite 13X/CaCl₂-water adsorption cooling system by improving adsorber design and operation sequence

In this study, a compact dual adsorber adsorption cooling system (ACS) prototype was built using the zeolite 13X/CaCl2 composite adsorbent with water as the adsorbate. The adsorbers were constructed by directly coating the composite adsorbent on parallel flow finned heat exchangers to enhance the heat and mass transfer performance. The compactness of the ACS is of great concern for use in buildings, where space is always limited. Through a better adsorber design, the specific cooling power (SCP) is largely improved from 106 W/kg to 377 W/kg (256% improvement) under the same desorption temperature, 85 degrees C, and chilled water inlet temperature, 14 C, even though the cooling water temperature is increased from 22 degrees C to 28 degrees C. Besides, four different operation sequences, namely basic cycle, mass recovery cycle, pre-heating & pre-cooling cycle, and mass recovery with pre-heating & pre-cooling cycle, were studied to optimize the system performance. It is found that performing the pre-heating & pre-cooling cycle can further increase the SCP to 401 W/kg. This promising result shows that the ACS has potential to be installed in buildings to achieve the goals of heating/cooling energy saving. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In binary image segmentation, the choice of the order of the operation sequence may yield to suboptimal results. In this work, we propose to tackle the associated optimization problem via multi-objective approach. Given the original image, in combination with a list of morphological, logical and stacking operations, the goal is to obtain the ideal output at the lowest computational cost. We compared the performance of two Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs): the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) and the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2). NSGA-II has better results in most cases, but the difference does not reach statistical significance. The results show that the similarity measure and the computational cost are objective functions in conflict, while the number of operations available and type of input images impact on the quality of Pareto set.

To date, similarity of parts in group technology research has been defined and operationalized primarily on the basis of the machine requirements of parts. In this paper, a similarity coefficient based on the similarity of operation sequences is presented, and its use for parts grouping is discussed. It is also illustrated that such a coefficient, augmented with an advanced clustering algorithm, can improve production effectiveness by identifying part families that allow machines to interleave between identical operations of different parts.

As the foremost step for designing a cellular manufacturing system, cell formation is a hard optimization problem. It is necessary and significant to develop methods to find near-optimal solutions in a reasonable time. In this paper, the first hybrid discrete Cuckoo Search (HDCS) algorithm is designed to address the cell formation problem. Alternative process routings and operation sequence of parts are considered. The number of cells is not known as a priori. In HDCS, Levy flights are redefined to perform the evolution of discrete solutions. Local search is employed to expand the search scope. Computational experiments on six cell formation problems available in the literature are also presented. The results reveal that HDCS outperforms the genetic algorithm-based and particle swarm optimization based approaches. HDCS is more robust, effective and efficient.

In this paper, aiming to achieve minimal energy consumption in context-aware device control in a smart-home, we propose a tool called PathSim which derives a minimal cost sequence of device operations for moving between two arbitrary contexts. PathSim properly divides the domain of each constituent smart-space context variable into a finite number of ranges, so that a finite discrete context space (finite number of contexts) is obtained. PathSim simulates the context move (range movement of a context variable) by every available event (device operation) at current context, and derives a minimal cost path (event sequence) using the proposed cost functions for events and derived contexts, from the current context into the intended one. To find a minimal cost path, PathSim adopts A* algorithm. PathSim prototype that we implemented can simulate the context moves for the events such as device attributes, temperature, humidity and user location, taking into account the size and structure of the smart-space, performance and power consumption of each device, and so on. Through a case study supposing a typical requirements specification in a smart-home, we confirmed that PathSim's device operations consume about 72% less energy than the conventional method based on intuitive device operations.
