The authors discuss shift-connected SIMD arrays that use optical space-invariant data movement among simple processing elements configured in large, rectangular arrays to realize a large variety of arithmetic and global data movement operations on arrays of numbers. Matrix-vector multiplications, iterative procedures for the numerical solution of PDEs, and fast numerical transforms can all be efficiently performed. They show that the shift-connected SIMD architecture compares favorably with other highly parallel architectures with respect to several standard metrics.

A method for monitoring the in-band signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of an opticaldata channel using narrow band RF analysis was demonstrated. The technique which utilizes an inherent symmetry present in the RF spectrum at half the data clock frequency, is highly sensitive and potentially low cost. In order to effectively monitor the performance of WDM optical networks, it was observed that it is useful to have a measurement of the SNR of each wavelength channel at various points throughout the network prior to the end terminal. The results show that the technique is well suited for monitoring conventional broadband degradation such as amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise.

Have demonstrated a single free space opticaldata link using GaAs MQWMs as the output ports and Si CMOS integrated photodetectors as the input ports. The modulators can be operated at 1 GHz with no noticeable drop in modulation depth. The detector circuit operates at 150 MHz with a 100 μW optical input power. When the two components are put together in a system, the operating frequency is 10 MHz with less than 100 μW optical power. The experimental results serve as proof of principle for the development of fully integrated optical interchip communication.

The paper presents five distinct methods to extend the functionality of the differential pair of optical thyristors with a Si integrated electronic control cell. This converts the incoming optical signals into TTL- or CMOS compatible electronic signals and vice versa. The addition of the digital logic and memory to the thyristor control cells had obtained smart pixels for multiple instruction multiple data (MIMD) optoelectronic processors. A new approach to optical MIMD computing by revising and implementing the Tse concept is introduced. These principles aim to execute different programs on different image elements while letting the programs exchange results. Compatibility of the optoelectronic Tse MIMD concept with the classic SISD operation of an electronic personal computer can be achieved if the format of the registers of the CPU of the computer under consideration.

In this paper we present a new technique for accomplishing the Fourier transformation of interferograms via total optical means. The technique involves: (1) obtaining interferograms of input optical signals through the scanning by Michelson interferometer;(2) accomplishing the time-to-space coordinate transformation of the interferograms by linearly recording on proper medium through a temporal-spatial transducer, namely KDP;(3) completing the Fourier transformation of the spatial interferogram by using a coherent optical spectrum analyzing system and then obtaining the spectrum of the input optical signal at the output plane of the system.

Research directed towards the development of a data preprocessor for earth resources satellites is reported. We present here results from a uniquely designed InP modulator chip combined with advanced packaging concepts, which enables high-end applications in opticaldata communications. An electroabsorption (EA) modulator, with a strained InGaAsP or InGaAlAs multiple quantum well structure, is monolithically integrated with a semiconductor optical amplifier. This design offers broad wavelength tunability while maintaining high extinction ratio, high optical output power, and high dispersion tolerance. The amplified EA modulator chip is co-packaged with a distributed feed back (DFB) laser ensuring separate optimization of the laser and modulator sections. The optical isolator, placed between the laser and modulator, completely eliminates adiabatic chirp. This Telcordia-qualified laser integrated modulator platform enables superior performance previously not thought possible for InP absorption based modulators. 11 dB of dynamic extinction ratio, 5dBm of modulated output power, and ±1200ps/nm or +1600ps/nm dispersion tolerance can be simultaneously achieved in un-amplified 10Gb/s data transmission. Full C-band tunability using a single device is also demonstrated with the LIM module. Extensive simulations and transmission system evaluations shows that with the controllable chirp, the cost-effective LIM performs as well as a Mach-Zehnder modulator in dispersion managed and amplified long-haul WDM systems. Lastly, the first uncooled 10Gb/s long-reach operation at 1550nm was demonstrated with LIM packages. Using a simple control algorithm, a constant modulated output power of IdBm with less than IdB dispersion penalty over 1600ps/nm single mode fiber is achieved in an 80 degrees environmental temperature range without any module temperature control. Utilizing the Al-based material system, also allows a reduced variation of the extinction ratio.
