The pocket-size liquid crystal television (LCTV) has been investigated for its potential as a two-dimensional spatial light modulator. The LCTV can be addressed using both a microcomputer and a TV camera. We have measured various characteristics of this device including transmission control, bipolar modulation capabilities, and have tested its usage as an input device for an optical correlator. optical phase distortions of the device can be compensated by a liquid gate. These results suggest that this device has great potential for optical pattern recognition and optical data processing applications.

Various real-time optical data processing experimentstusing the photo-DKDP spatial light modulator are described. These include the performance of image subtraction and contrast reversal directly on the light valve and their application to practical pattern recognition situations in which the input and reference objects differ. Examples of real-time optical correlation on coded waveforms for signal processing are presented, and the accuracy of the optically produced ambiguity function outputs are compared to the theoretically expected ones. Real-time optical image pattern recognition experiments are also presented, together with comparative data obtained with off-line correlations performed using film.

A design procedure for the optical data processing system is explained systematically with appropriate equations. Further, the equations embody the overall length of the processing system and its back focal length to facilitate the experimental operations and to reduce coherent noise and ghost images. It is evident from the equations that the system can have a unique overall length for a selected set of initial values. The system's aberrations are controlled well below the Rayleigh quarter wave limits in order to get exactly the Fourier spectrum in the filter plane.
