Noncoherent spectral optical CDMA system using 1-D subtracted square codes of all transmitters in one optical line terminal

We propose a family of one-dimensional subtracted square codes in the spectral amplitude coding optical code division multiple access system. The proposed codes perform the subtraction and multiplication operations to give one-to-one mappings function, which produces the code sequences of 1-D subtracted square codes. The proposed structure uses one optical line terminal to produce all of the transmitters. This proposed system overcomes the interference from other simultaneous users, known as multiuser interference, and the cross-correlations suppress the phase-induced intensity noise. In numerical simulations using the proposed 1-D subtracted square codes, we show that 83 simultaneous users can be supported at a bit error rate of . This number of simultaneous users in the proposed system using the 1-D subtracted square codes is superior to that in the other systems using the 1-D M sequence codes, 1-D RSQC codes, and 1-D ESP codes. The proposed system using the 1-D subtracted square codes achieves a data transmission rate of 3.2 Gbps.

Computer networks are one of the major slices of the global energy consumption. Since 2009, a couple of standards have been developed for energy conservation in passive optical networks. These standards and most of the researches are based on improvements on optical Network Unit side. In this study, a novel energy efficiency algorithm, which is based on coupling two optical line terminal to reduce energy consumption in central office, is proposed. Our design employs optical switches and amplifiers to create a switch-box, which is under control of both optical line terminal pairs.

This paper proposes a resilient, bandwidth scalable and energy efficient WDM-TDM passive optical network (PON) architecture that provides network access services to the end user at very high data rates and reduces the power consumption of access network significantly in the presence of low traffic/underutilized network. The proposed power saving technique includes the efficient use of proper line cards (LC) and adaptive link rate (ALR) mechanism at optical line terminal located at the central office. In the presence of low traffic, ALR switches link rate from 10 to 1 Gbps depending on the particular threshold value of traffic load. In the presence of narrowband traffic, a significant amount of energy is saved. Proposed architecture also saves capital expenditure (CAPEX) at remote node and reduces significant CAPEX for larger networks. This architecture also provides network resiliency against LC/TRx or module failure and bandwidth scalability to support future generation PON architectures without any service interruption.

The most important challenge in an Ethernet Passive optical Network (EPON) is bandwidth allocation. This is because it is a mandatory service to satisfy the end users' service level agreement (SLA). Dynamic allocation of bandwidth on the diversified characteristics of services such as high definition video, audio cloud computing resource sharing, and virtual reality games is required, especially in point-to-point and multipoint-to-point architectures. Hence, we propose an integrated Unified Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Scheme (UDBAS) framework for wired and wireless network devices. Our proposed UDBAS framework can provide superior execution of the process of bandwidth partitioning with regard to the acceptance probability and bandwidth utilization, particularly when short-term variations in bandwidth requirements occur. More specifically, owing to the requirement of bandwidth at each customer premises, the present scheme is not efficient for scheduling bandwidth management. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a UDBAS scheme that is based on the predictive user's bandwidth requirement and regulates bandwidth resources. We show both analytically and by simulation that the proposed scheme can be efficiently applied to an EPON network.

Ethernet passive optical network-long-term evolution deployment for a green access network

Access networks contribute a significant portion of the energy consumption of the telecom network. In this study, the authors propose a distributed bandwidth allocation signalling framework for a green hybrid Fibre-Wireless (Fi-Wi) access network, which is based on the convergence of ethernet passive optical network and third-generation partnership project-long-term evolution-advanced technologies. According to the proposed framework, the Fi-Wi network is deployed by pairing joint optical network unit-base station (ONU-BS) nodes. An ONU-BS that is experiencing light load from the end-users sends a SLEEP signal to the optical line terminal (OLT), and switches to the stand-by mode whereas its BS module forwards the traffic to the peer ONU-BS. The peer ONU-BS keeps buffering the requests destined to the sleeping ONU-BS, and sends REPORTs for the corresponding packets to the OLT. Through simulations, the authors generate various traffic profiles, and show that the proposed framework provides significant amount of energy savings at the ONUs when compared with regular operation mode. Furthermore, the simulation results also show that average packet delay and average packet loss do not increase significantly by utilising the active ONU-BS devices whereas their corresponding peers are sleeping.

Wavelength reused upstream transmission scheme for WDM passive optical networks

A novel technique facilitating wavelength reused upstream transmission in a WDM passive optical network, eliminating wavelength source at ONUs, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A subcarrier frequency is used for downstream transmission and the pure optical carrier is filtered and reused for upstream transmission. The scheme requires only simple baseband receivers at both ONU and OLT terminals.

On WDM RoF-EPON link using OSSB transmission with and without DCF plus FBG

A system is presented which uses optical SSB transmission on WDM RoF-EPON link to compensate dispersion and FWM with DCF and FBG. Performance of the system is improved by 8.91% with the use of DCF and FBG for equal spacing between the channels and it is further increased by 9.51% by keeping unequal spacing between the channels. Results are compared for equal and unequal spacing with and without DCF and FBG. BER, Q factor and eye diagrams have been analyzed for evaluating the performance of the system. The tremendous Internet traffic growth has confirmed that the telecommunications back-bone is moving aggressively from a time division multiplexing (TDM) orientation to a focus on Ethernet solution. Ethernet PON, which presents the convergence of low-cost Ethernet and fiber infrastructures, has taken over the market initially dominated by Digital Subscriber line (DSL) and cable modems. It is a new technology that is simple, inexpensive, and scalable, having the ability to deliver massive data services to end-users over a single network. This paper reviewed the evolution of Ethernet Passive optical Network (EPON), with focus on the current development process of the future high-data-rate access networks such as Next-Generation Passive optical Network Stage 2 (NG-PON2), Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) PON, and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) PON. In addition, the recently concluded 100 Gb Ethernet Passive optical Network (100G-EPON) is reviewed with the aim of highlighting the recent developments in the field. With this comprehensive and up-to-date review, we equip network operators and interested practitioners to focus on common priorities and timelines. The authors propose a novel traffic prediction method for the minimisation of packet delay in Ethernet passive optical networks. The method relies on traffic monitoring at the optical network units (ONUs) and utilises readily available traffic information to predict the accumulated burst size of each respective ONU in the following cycle. They demonstrate that a significant delay enhancement can be accomplished by reporting the predicted, rather than the current, burst size to the optical line terminal (OLT). The author's simulation results show that a delay improvement of over 25% can be expected by the proposed method without modifying the well-established interleaved polling scheme with adaptive cycle time dynamic bandwidth assignment scheme at the OLT.

This work proposes a new family of 1-D added length codes for use in spectral amplitude coding optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) networks. The proposed structure uses the proposed optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network units (ONUs) to produce a simple architecture for ease of operation. The OLT transfers the information bits into the code sequences of 1-D added length codes in OCDMA. The ONUs use the code sequences of the 1-D added length codes to perform a modified cross-correlation, which produces the recovered "1" and "0" bits at the photodiodes. The photodiodes remove the interference caused by other simultaneous users, which is called multi-user interference. Additionally, the proposed modified cross-correlation process suppresses the phase-induced intensity noise. The numerical results demonstrate the bit error rate of the proposed system using 1-D added length codes to be better than that of other comparable systems using 1-D M-sequence codes, 1-D composite M-sequence codes, 1-D Hadamard codes, and 1-D MQC codes. The data transmission rate using the 1-D added length codes can reach 2.5 Gbps.
