This qualitative case study employed Wittrock's Generative Learning Model to examine in-depth one kindergarten child's comprehension when reading considerate and inconsiderate CD-ROM talking books in a classroom computer center. A CD-ROM talking book consists of a story told through multimedia modes of information that has been digitized on a CD. Considerate CD-ROM talking books are those that include multimedia effects that are congruent with and integral to the story Inconsiderate CD-ROM talking books are those that include multimedia effects that are incongruent with or incidental to the story. Findings indicate that considerate CD-R OM talking books supported the child's understanding and retelling of the story and involved meaning-making processes that wove together affective responses, cognitive processes, and metacognitive activity;however inconsiderate CD-ROM talking books resulted in the child's inability to retell the story in a cohesive way and fostered passive viewing. Implications for research and practice are drawn.

A self-selected sample of 4695 university and college students participated in a short-term evaluation of an interactive CD-ROM addressing harm reduction for alcohol use. The CD-ROM (Alcohol 101) uses a mix of video, text, music, graphics, and animation elements to present behavioral change strategies for safe and responsible use of alcohol. Student learning about alcohol as measured by self-report was generally in the desired direction and supportive of the impact of the CD-ROM on understanding of the physiological impact of alcohol and the range of behavioral options for pacing consumption and helping friends in potential peril.

Multimedia software combining video, sound, pictures, text and feedback in an interactive environment is ideally suited for developing a foreign language skill, but is costly and time-consuming to produce. This paper describes the production and the learning rationale of a series of six multimedia CD-ROMs that develop the listening skills of learners of Business English. The problems of cost, time, and quality which were encountered in the production of multiple courseware are described. The programming solution to these problems is put forward. This involved the creation of tools which enabled the subject expert to have complete and direct control over the language learning material. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article investigates the nature of language learning using CD-ROM packages. The research explores cognitive processes and alternative learning experiences which contrast with conventional delivery modes in foreign language teaching. The article concludes that CD-ROM can promote vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation and independent learning and has a major contribution to make to the development of language teaching and learning.

Eighty 11-year-old pupils (40 males and 40 females) from an urban primary school were assessed for cognitive style by means of the Cognitive Styles Analysis which indicated their positions on each of the two style dimensions, the Wholist-Analytic and the Verbal-Imagery. They then studied parts of three CD-ROM multi-media packages on science topics and after each, completed a multiple choice recall test, An indication of their performance on traditionally taught science was taken to be the performance on science SATs at 11 years. A comparison between multi-media and traditional work indicated that, (a) in terms of overall science performance (traditional and multi-media), Wholist-Imagers and Analytic-Verbalisers were superior to Wholist-Verbalisers and Analytic-Imagers, and (b) Analytics did better on traditional work than multimedia, with the reverse for the Wholists. With the multi-media materials there were three modes of presentation-picture and sound (PS), picture and text (PT), and picture, text and sound (PTS), Female Wholist-Imagers and Analytic-Verbalisers were better with PS than PT, with the reverse for Wholist-Verbalisers and Analytic-Imagers, while the opposite applied for males. For all style and gender groups performance was best with PTS. The findings are discussed in terms of their practical implications and further research.

Modern technologies can provide language students with authentic content and contextualized, collaborative learning situations. This article illustrates how e-mail exchanges, Web exercises, and CD-ROM development between students in the United States and organizations in Ecuador can promote contextualized and authentic practice of Spanish language and culture as well as the design of mutually beneficial practical applications.

Considers two CD-Rom narratives as examples of high quality, interactive multimedia texts currently available. Looks at how verbal and visual texts draw the reader into an interactive response and the extent to which multimedia elements shape the reader's experience of the text. Bases findings loosely on fieldwork involving responses of four readers (ages 4, 6, 9, and 14). (RS)
