Lidars are becoming very attractive for autonomous vehicles or robots combined with other sensors. However, in the specific case of autonomous car driving (ADAS), the requirements from vehicle suppliers are very stricts and become critical for the 1st generation of Lidars based on micro-optics. The required size, the performances to allow fast and accurate detection of obstacle over long distance as well as a limited cost are requiring a new generation of Lidars based on new technologies to realize the beam steering device. This was taken into account for several years by developing solid state optical steering devices (optical phase array, OPA) using conventional silicon photonic. The second step come from the complete integration of these devices in the Lidar system. The conventional packaging technology based on wire bonding appears limited in size, density as well as cost and new approaches using collective manufacturing must be evaluated. The work reported here is based on the introduction of advanced 3D & Packaging solutions such as Through Silicon Vias (TSV) and fine pitch flip chip. These solutions are similar to the one chosen for advanced 3D integration for electronic devices and their adaptation to photonic integration with electronics will bring an additional flexibility for heterogeneous integration.

A multi-stage Mach-Zehnder based integrated continuously tunable optical delay line with a large tunability range, increasing transmission bandwidth and the significant delay bandwidth product has recently been proposed in our previous work. However, as photonic devices are larger compared to wavelength, a slight variation in device geometry (due to stochastic uncertainties) can have significant impact on phase, particularly for devices dependent on interferometers such as Mach-Zehnder. Stochastic uncertainties affect the functional parameter of the fabricated circuit, and it is important to predict the performance of devices. In this work, we first review the proposed multi-stage Mach-Zehnder based photonics integrated delay line and then we analyze the performance variability caused by stochastic uncertainty in the delay line. We have analyzed the most crucial functional parameters that are the transmission, the group delay, 3-dB bandwidth, linear group delay and bandwidth delay product around operating frequency in presence of stochastic uncertainties

A multi-stage Mach-Zehnder based integrated continuously tunable optical delay line with a large tunability range, increase transmission bandwidth and the vast delay-bandwidth product is demonstrated. The proposed non-resonant delay line is based on cascaded lattice Mach-Zehnder. With the proposed generalized, hitless, and simple control strategy, the delay tunability and delay bandwidth product of the delay line increases with increasing order of Mach-Zehnder based stage. In this paper, we have reported the results of delay line up to order 10 using the proposed control strategy. We have also shown the comparison between single and multiple stage delay lines over various characteristics. We demonstrated that using the proposed control strategy, the four-stage Mach-Zehnder delay line has transmission bandwidth, delay tunability, and delay-bandwidth product that is 12%, 4x, and 10x larger, respectively compared to one-stage Mach-Zehnder delay line. We have also demonstrated that the bandwidth-delay product is almost increasing linearly with an increase in the number of stages of Mach-Zehnder stages.

Scalable Switched Slab Coupler Based optical phased array on Silicon Nitride

A two-dimensional optical-phased array is demonstrated by using a multiple-input star coupler, compatible with FMCW LiDAR. Previous approach using a single-input design achieves two-dimensional beam-steering by relying on a tunable laser source, taking advantage of grating coupler radiation angle wavelength dependance and variation of the waveguide refractive index. While implementing a convenient way to distribute power in a single step, star coupler architecture is inefficient in terms of employed waveguide length and thus, optical loss and footprint. Multi-input approach partially alleviates this by condensing several single-input devices into one, permitting to reduce the footprint proportionally to the employed number of inputs. We fabricated in silicon nitride technology a proof of concept steerer with beam waist 0.36 degrees x0.17.5 degrees addressing a field of view of 15 degrees x2.8 degrees. A new design iteration is also reported with and 0.24 degrees X0.16 degrees beam waist and 15 degrees x11.2 degrees field of view. Implications of this optical-phased array chips from a LiDAR system perspective are also presented.

A novel approach based on the isomerous structure is proposed to improve the performances of liquid crystal optical phased array. Inspired by a space-variant structure, a series of kinoforms are sent to the spatial light modulator to produce space-variant beam steering. The mathematical model of the proposed is deduced and the key parameters are studied. Simulations and experiments are carried out to test the models. Simulations agree well with the experiments, which shows the correctness of the theory. The results are of interested to the integrated, low-cost, and stable beam steering system.

The low resolution of APD array is the limitation of three-dimensional imaging based on APD array. A method of beam array scanning with liquid crystal phase space light modulator is proposed to realize high-resolution three dimension imaging by low resolution APD array. The Dammann grating is used to generate a beam array, and then the beam array is deflected by a liquid crystal phase space light modulator. Since the divergence angle of sub-beam in the beam array is smaller than the field of view of the pixel in the APD array, the pixels of the APD arrays only respond to the three-dimensional information of the position illuminated by the sub-beam., the pixel collects the three-dimensional information of the target multiple times by the scanning of the beam array. In this way, it improves the resolution of the APD array. It simulates this method in the Matlab based on two-dimensional scalar diffraction theory, which realizes the division and scanning with a resolution of 5 x 5. And finally the feasibility of this method is verified by experiment.
