Currently available very large-scale integrations (VLSIs) are vulnerable to radiation, as measured in terms of soft error and total-ionizing-dose. Therefore, by following a repairable VLSI concept, we have been developing a radiation-hardened optical reconfigurable gate array VLSI that can support a use of a partially damaged VLSI. Earlier development efforts have fabricated a 1 Grad total-ionizing-dose tolerant radiation-hardened optical reconfigurable gate array VLSI using the repairable VLSI concept. However, since stabilized power supply units are also vulnerable to radiation, a radiation-hardened optical reconfigurable gate array VLSI with no stabilized function must be used with a battery in intense radiation environments such as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This paper presents the operating voltage range of a radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate array VLSI. These findings confirm that a battery direct drive is possible for a radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate array VLSI.

Liquid crystal composite-based holographic memory possesses a self-forming function induced by light irradiation, facilitating the creation of intricate three-dimensional structures. These features are applicable for recording and reconstructing circuit information in optically reconfigurable gate arrays (ORGAs). Introducing holographic memory to ORGAs paves the way for parallel processing techniques based on a spatial light wiring process. This becomes crucial for fabricating radiation-hardened devices where utmost reliability is imperative. The development of interference exposure optics, employing various laser wavelengths, including a short-wavelength blue laser, is a critical aspect of enhancing the capacity of holographic memory through miniaturizing its internal structure. Consequently, we diligently undertook the construction of an interference exposure optical setup comprising a laser combiner with multiple laser wavelengths, as well as the establishment of a holographic memory system for ORGAs. © 2024 IEEE.

Space systems require radiation-hardened devices with high soft-error tolerance and high total-ionizing-dose tolerance. An optically reconfigurable gate array (ORGA) with over 400 Mrad total-ionizing-dose has been developed. The total-ionizing-dose tolerance of the ORGA is 400 times higher than currently available radiation-hardened devices. Moreover, the ORGAs can support high-speed scrubbing of configuration memory so that soft errors on configuration memory can be ignored during operations. However, soft-errors that arise on the programmable gate array side must be removed. Therefore, this paper presents a new ORGA VLSI with a triple modular redundancy gate array structure that can completely remove soft-errors on its programmable gate array.

Currently, research of optically reconfigurable gate arrays (ORGAs), a type of multi-context field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), has progressed rapidly. ORGAs offer important benefits of high-speed reconfiguration, numerous reconfiguration contexts, and robust configuration. Such ORGAs always consist of a single-wavelength laser array to address configuration contexts. However, for this architecture, concerns related to its package size often arise. The laser array is large because of the large space between lasers. For that reason, the ORGA also tends to be large. Therefore, we have introduced some wavelength lasers inside a laser array of an ORGA to decrease the laser array size. Results show that the ORGA package can be smaller. However, the dependability of color configuration has never been discussed up to now. This paper therefore presents a demonstration of the radiation tolerance of color configuration on an optically reconfigurable gate array.

We have been developing radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate arrays able to operate in severe radiation environments such as nuclear power plants. To ensure the radiation tolerance of radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate arrays, total-ionizing-dose experiments for radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate arrays must be executed frequently. The necessary condition for the total-ionizing-dose experiments is to activate the radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate array under a strong Cobalt-60 Gamma radiation environment. For this purpose, we've developed a remote monitoring system for radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate arrays located in a strong radiation environment. This paper presents test results for a radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate array using a remote monitoring system. © 2024 IEEE.

Space systems and robots used at nuclear power plants require radiation-hardened image sensors that can function for long periods in an environment with intense radiation. This paper presents a radiation-hardened image sensor from which the on-chip control circuit has been removed. The image sensor can therefore be controlled entirely from outside of the environment. This paper clarifies the total-ionizing-dose tolerance of the radiation-hardened image sensor.

Since space embedded systems used for space rockets, space stations, and space satellites are constantly affected by radiation, high soft-error tolerant devices are absolutely necessary. Currently, although field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are used widely for such space systems, the configuration memory is extremely vulnerable to radiation. Therefore, scrubbing methods are applied frequently for the FPGA configuration memory to increase their soft-error tolerance. This paper presents a proposal of a multicontext scrubbing method applicable for sequential circuits on a radiation-hardened optically reconfigurable gate array. The scrubbing operation can be executed within a 1 m s period, which is about 100,000 times faster than that of existing FPGAs. Moreover, a system protected by the scrubbing operation can function with no termination, even after some flip-flops are permanently ruined by radiation.

Recently, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are anticipated for use in high-radiation environments such as that of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. According to recently reported news, an area with 650 Sv/h radiation intensity has been confirmed outside of a containment vessel at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. For uses under such extremely high radiation environments, high-speed scrubbing operations must be applied for FPGAs. A highspeed optical scrubbing method that can be used on optically reconfigurable gate arrays has been proposed in recent reports of the literature. Such optically reconfigurable gate arrays using optical high-speed scrubbing can be used in environments with intense radiation. In addition, to increase the optical scrubbing operation speed, this paper demonstrates a high-speed optical scrubbing method with a simpler sequence for use on an optically reconfigurable gate array. The 50 ns period high-speed scrubbing operation could be confirmed on the fabricated optically reconfigurable gate array VLSI.

Recently, fiber networks and undersea fiber optic cables have become widely used throughout the world. Because of its much lower attenuation and interference, optical fiber is superior to copper wires for long-distance applications. Such fibers' transfer rates and distances reach GHz-order and over 100 km. Up to now, a remote configurable FPGA system using current fiber networks was reported. However, since its configuration speed was very low, dynamic highspeed reconfiguration was impossible. This paper therefore presents a high-speed remote reconfiguration experiment using a bundle of fiber networks and an optically reconfigurable gate array. Such architecture presents the possibility of a remote high-speed dynamic reconfigurable hardware system.
