Solving the inverse problem of an SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion model by optimal control methods

In this contribution, a novel inverse problem on an SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion model is investigated by employing the optimal control methods. By setting a proper regular cost functional and choosing the coefficients to be identified as control variables, we embed the original inverse problem which is very difficult to solve into an optimal control problem. The existence of the optimal controls and the first order necessary optimality condition satisfied by the optimal controls are established, respectively. In particular, the local uniqueness and stability of the identification of the coefficients are proved by using analytical techniques. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The design of an efficient electricity market for developing countries is a challenging task. The policy makers in these markets face challenges of poor investor interest, low consumer access, poor government structures, etc. There is also a need to meet global trends in reducing greenhouse emissions while improving electricity access and meeting social goals. These objectives can be conflicting especially in the early stages of development of green technologies for electricity generation. This dissertation is divided into four main sections; (1) the design of a privatized market structure with a serious entrant firm, (2) optimal Taxing Strategy to Increase Competitiveness of Green Utility Supplier, and (3) Measuring the effects of competition and privatization in electricity *** first study focuses on electricity markets in developing economies. Electricity utilities in developing economies face the challenge of increasing their network size while facing regulatory instruments like emission taxes in an underdeveloped network. The main challenge is the appropriate pricing strategy to implement to maximize long run profits for the incumbent. While for the entrant, there is a need to maximize long run profits and stay in the market. In addition, developing economies often have a monopolistic electricity market and low levels of electricity access. To address these challenges, this work identifies the pricing strategy for the utility players in a newly established competitive market. The pricing and network dynamics of a rational profit maximization entrant utility competing with a profit maximizing dominant incumbent is investigated. Each utility seeks to identify a pricing path that maximizes its long run profits. The analysis presented consist of nine distinct cases. While there are many numerical solution methods for different problem classes, identifying the most efficient approach for a specific problem with defined parameter values entails conducting numerous comparative experiments. Usually, end users face difficulties when undertaking such experiments, which entail understanding the domain of applicability of diverse numerical methods and involve conducting a thorough comparative analysis of the results, which is time-consuming. We carry out the analysis of techniques and algorithms for managing a computational process to solve difficult or complex optimization problems with the use of computer systems. This research puts forward two approaches to streamline the utilization of existing applied software packages on modern multi-processor and/or multicore computer systems for multivariate optimization problems. One of the approaches entails the user actively interacting with the optimization program package in a dialogue mode. In contrast, the other approach entails packet control through a dedicated control program operating in automatic mode. The manuscript provides the protocols and outcomes of computer-based experiments conducted for unconstrained optimization problems using the developed software package

Reaction monitoring using hyperpolarized NMR with scaling of heteronuclear couplings by optimal tracking

Off-resonance decoupling using the method of Scaling of Heteronuclear Couplings by optimal Tracking (SHOT) enables determination of heteronuclear correlations of chemical shifts in single scan NMR spectra. Through modulation of J-coupling evolution by shaped radio frequency pulses, off resonance decoupling using SHOT pulses causes a user-defined dependence of the observed J-splitting, such as the splitting of C-13 peaks, on the chemical shift offset of coupled nuclei, such as H-1. Because a decoupling experiment requires only a single scan, this method is suitable for characterizing on-going chemical reactions using hyperpolarization by dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (D-DNP). We demonstrate the calculation of [C-13, H-1] chemical shift correlations of the carbanionic active sites from hyperpolarized styrene polymerized using sodium naphthalene as an initiator. While off resonance decoupling by SHOT pulses does not enhance the resolution in the same way as a 2D NMR spectrum would, the ability to obtain the correlations in single scans makes this method ideal for determination of chemical shifts in on-going reactions on the second time scale. In addition, we present a novel SHOT pulse that allows to scale J-splittings 50% larger than the respective J-coupling constant. This feature can be used to enhance the resolution of the indirectly detected chemical shift and reduce peak overlap, as demonstrated in a model reaction between p-anisaldehyde and isobutylamine. For both pulses, the accuracy is evaluated under changing signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the peaks from reactants and reaction products, with an overall standard deviation of chemical shift differences compared to reference spectra of 0.02 ppm when measured on a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer. Notably, the appearance of decoupling side-bands, which scale with peak intensity, appears to be of secondary importance. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

General approach for the calculation and optimal control of the extended-reach limit in horizontal drilling based on the mud weight window

There are two shortcomings in the previous open-hole extended-reach limit model: 1) only the drilling process is analysed, while the whole processes should also include the tripping process;2) the optimal control methods have not been fully considered. To overcome these shortcomings, a set of calculation and optimal control methods of the open-hole extended-reach limit in horizontal drilling are presented in this paper. First, the horizontal section limit expressions of a horizontal extended-reach well (ERW) for different drilling processes are obtained. A modified mud weight window (MWW) for a horizontal ERW is determined according to those expressions, and the modified MWW can be used to solve the problem that the conventional MWW may fail to satisfy the operation window of horizontal extended-reach drilling (ERD). Second, the horizontal section limit values of the drilling process (sliding drilling mode and rotating drilling mode) and the tripping in and tripping out processes are calculated, and the minimum of these values is taken as the maximum horizontal section limit. Finally, several optimal control methods of obtaining the greater horizontal section limit are also provided from three aspects: drilling modes, drilling parameters and mud performance parameters. The results of the case study show that the modified MWW can change with the different operating parameters, rather than remain constant range. Moreover, the modified MWW is narrower than the conventional one. The maximum horizontal section limit should be simultaneously determined by the processes of drilling, tripping in and tripping out. The tripping velocity has little effect on the optimal mud density, whereas the maximum horizontal section limit decreases with the increase in tripping velocity. In addition, both the optimal mud density and the maximum horizontal section limit decrease with the increase in drill string rotation speed. Deep reinforcement-learning-based driving policy for autonomous road vehicles

In this work, the problem of path planning for an autonomous vehicle that moves on a freeway is considered. The most common approaches that are used to address this problem are based on optimal control methods, which make assumptions about the model of the environment and the system dynamics. On the contrary, this work proposes the development of a driving policy based on reinforcement learning. In this way, the proposed driving policy makes minimal or no assumptions about the environment, since a priori knowledge about the system dynamics is not required. Driving scenarios where the road is occupied both by autonomous and manual driving vehicles are considered. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first approaches that propose a reinforcement learning driving policy for mixed driving environments. The derived reinforcement learning policy, firstly, is compared against an optimal policy derived via dynamic programming, and, secondly, its efficiency is evaluated under realistic scenarios generated by the established SUMO microscopic traffic flow simulator. Finally, some initial results regarding the effect of autonomous vehicles' behaviour on the overall traffic flow are presented.

In this note we discuss the existence and stability of an inverse problem arising from the determination of the reaction coefficients for an SIS model. The study is motivated by a remark regarding the final discussion of the recent paper by Xiang and Liu (2015). The weak assumption of the work of H. Xiang and B. Liu is that the proofs of existence and stability results are valid only for the one-dimensional case. We consider general shape optimization problems governed by Dirichlet boundary value problems. The proposed approach may be extended to other boundary conditions as well. It is based on a recent representation result for implicitly defined manifolds, due to the authors, and it is formulated as an optimal control problem. The discretized approximating problem is introduced and we give an explicit construction of the associated discrete gradient. Some numerical examples are also indicated.

Gearshift optimal control of a hybrid powertrain with a lumped/decoupled transmission model and backlash dynamics in the driveline is studied. A model is used for a heavy duty powertrain including a validated mean value diesel engine model with electric generator, transmission dynamics representing the dynamics of the automated manual transmission system and driveshaft flexibilities. Backlash dynamics are also included in the driveline model by introducing a switching function. By applying numerical optimal control methods and dividing the gearshift process into separate phases, optimization problems are solved to investigate the minimum time and low Jerk gearshift transients. The controls are also calculated with fuel penalties added to the minimum Jerk optimization and the transients are analyzed. © 2016
