The relative sensor-emitter geometry has a great impact on the localisation accuracy. In this study, optimal deployments of hybrid time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) and angle-of-arrival (AOA) localisation are studied. The explicit expression of the determinant of the Fisher information matrix is acquired and chosen as the criterion to determine optimal sensor deployments with the assumption of Gaussian measurement noise. The analytic solutions of the optimal sensor geometries are derived in both general and co-located scenarios. Finally, the theoretical developments are corroborated by simulation examples of unmanned aerial vehicles path planning problem.

Deploying feeder remote terminal units (FRTUs) in the distribution network and then integrating them into existing manual switches (MSs) can facilitate automatic locating of faulted sections and rapid isolation from faults to improve the power supply reliability. However, the fault management process, including fault location, fault isolation, and service restoration, is usually simplified in traditional FRTUs deployment methods. In particular, the fault isolation and service restoration operations are usually modeled individually without considering the FRTUs operation during the whole fault management process in these traditional methods. In this paper, the FRTUs in the potential service restoration paths for the customers are ruled out to avoid unnecessary power outage, and the effect of FRTUs operation on the fault management process is analyzed and discussed in branched distribution networks. Secondly, a quantification analysis model considering FRTUs operation is built to obtain the accurate interruption time of the distribution network. Thirdly, the quantification model is used to obtain the revenue generated by interruption cost reduction for the deployed FRTUs. Finally, an optimal deployment model of FRTUs in mixed-integer nonlinear format is constructed and solved efficiently by the software LocalSolver, which combines heuristic techniques and stochastic search algorithms. The new method is compared with the traditional FRTUs deployment method in the CSG 53-node test system, and the results show that the proposed method can achieve greater return on investment and higher power supply reliability. New propagation techniques using magnetic induction (MI) waveguide solves the problems of traditional techniques in many challenged environments, such as underground, mines/tunnels, and oil reservoirs. However, deploying MI waveguides to connect the wireless nodes in such networks is challenging due to the high deployment cost, the complex shape of the communication range of the MI waveguides, and the significant impacts of the node failure and relay coil displacement. To date, the deployment problems in the MI-based networks have not been addressed. In this paper, the optimal MI waveguide deployment strategies are investigated in both one and two dimensional MI-based networks where the nodes are distributed either randomly or according to a regular lattice. Validated by both theoretical deduction and simulations, the proposed deployment strategies can construct a reliable MI-based network that is robust to node failure and relay coil displacement with minimum cost.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently received a significant interest to assist terrestrial wireless networks thanks to their strong line-of-sight links and flexible/instant deployment. However, UAVs' assistance is limited by their battery lifetime and wireless backhaul link capacity. At the expense of limited mobility, tethered UAVs (T-UAVs) can be a viable alternative to provide seamless service over a cable that simultaneously supplies power and data from a ground station (GS). Accordingly, this paper presents a comparative performance analysis of T-UAV and regular/untethered UAV (U-UAV)-assisted cellular traffic offloading from a geographical area that undergoes heavy traffic conditions. By using stochastic geometry tools, we first derive joint distance distributions between the hot-spot users, the terrestrial base station (TBS), and the UAV. To maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio, a user association policy is developed, and corresponding association regions are analytically identified. Then, the overall coverage probability of the U-UAV/T-UAV-assisted system is derived for given locations of the TBS and the U-UAV/T-UAV. Moreover, we analytically prove that optimal UAV location falls within a partial surface of the spherical cone centered at the GS. Numerical results show that T-UAV outperforms U-UAV given that sufficient GS locations accessibility and tether length are provided.

How to optimally construct belt barrier coverage to blanket the field of interest (FoI) is a critical and essential issue in wireless sensor networks. To solve this issue, an optimization method is proposed in this paper for deploying multistatic radar. The proposed method utilizes multiple unequal-width barriers consisting of different deployment sequences. First, the structure of the sequence consists of different deployment patterns, and it is challenging to determine it directly. We prove the mutual relations among different patterns and propose an optimization principle to simplify the sequence structure. In addition, one barrier coverage is usually inadequate to cover the whole FoI, thus multiple unequal-width barrier coverages are adopted. Then, we model the issue as a linear programming problem. To solve this model, integer linear programming (ILP) and exhaustive methods are jointly exploited to determine the sequence structure on one deployment line by minimizing the deployment cost. Subsequently, the ILP is adopted to explore the number of varied barriers and the corresponding minimum cost. Meanwhile, the optimal deployment parameters, such as the number of deployment lines, receivers, and transmitters, can be determined. Some numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate that, compared with the existing method, the proposed method requires a lower deployment cost and fewer transmitters.

Configurable processes are increasingly being adopted by enterprises that seek experience sharing and best practice adoption. A configurable process is a customizable model that specifies how different enterprises perform similar processes. At the modeling level, a configurable process model provides for flexible business process (BP) reuse by (de) selecting the (ir) relevant parts to derive a particular process variant. At the exploitation level, it offers flexibility and agility to an enterprise looking to outsource its BP to different providers cooperating in a cloud federation. More specifically, an enterprise can use a configurable process model to derive particular process variants that it outsources depending on its objectives. In particular, it may opt for outsourcing the variant that results in the optimal deployment, e.g., having the minimal cost of allocated cloud services that fulfill the user quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, identifying the optimal deployment variants is a complex problem because of the heterogeneity of services within a cloud federation and the number of possible variants that can be derived from a configurable process model. In addition, the complexity of this problem increases for variable user QoS requirements. In this paper, we propose an approach to derive, from a configurable process model, the variant that has the optimal deployment in a cloud federation. We propose a linear programming approach that accounts for the variability of both the BP model and the user QoS requirements, and that ensures an optimal time-aware cloud service allocation. We experimentally show the effectiveness and flexibility of our approach on a generated testbed.

This paper addresses issues relevant to thruster-aided deployment of spin-stabilized tethered formations in a circular orbit. The dynamics of the tethered formation are first established by treating the parent satellite as a finite-sized body with respect to its spinning motion. To achieve the minimum-power trajectories for formation deployment, the optimal deployment problem is analytically formulated using Pontryagin's minimum principle. Physical constraints on tether tension, thrust amplitude, and libration angle are also considered. To handle nonlinearities, the problem is solved numerically using a direct method based on the Gauss pseudospectral approach, in which the optimal deployment profiles are obtained and all of the solutions are proven to be within a feasible range. Finally, based on a variety of simulations, the optimal solution's sensitivity to certain parameters is also analyzed.

In the sense of minimum concentration ellipse, the optimal deployment of multiple passive sensors in bearing-only location system is studied in terms of cut angle. It is found that the optimum cut angle depends only on l, the ratio of the distance between target and the baseline of the two sensors to the baseline length. When l is greater than 0.5, the optimum cut angle can be obtained if the deployment of the target and the two passive sensors is an isosceles triangle with the baseline length as its base side. When l is less than 0.5, the optimum cut angle can be obtained if the target and the two passive sensors are located on the circle with the baseline length as its diameter, that is, the deployment of the target and the two passive sensors being a right triangle. When l equals 0.5, the optimum cut angle can be obtained if the target and the two passive sensors are deployed on an isosceles right triangle. The global minimum value of concentration ellipse can be asymptotically reached by decreasing the ratio l to zero based on these properties of the optimum cut angle.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are resource-scarce networks and the optimization of the resources is challenging. As far as random deployment is concerned, the optimization of these resources becomes even more difficult In this paper, a novel framework is proposed for solving optimal deployment problems for randomly deployed and clustered WSNs. In several existing approaches to solve these problems, either only partial-coverage is considered or only connectivity is analyzed when full-coverage is assured. Through this study, we aim to contribute to the better understanding of partial connected coverage. For this purpose, we introduce cluster size formulations which provide network designers with estimating partial-coverage easily. While the proposed framework facilitates our cluster size formulations for coverage estimations, it also adopts the percolation theory to analyze the degree of connectivity when the targeted degree of partial-coverage is achieved. As the partial connected coverage approach reflects real-life deployment scenarios, the use of percolation theory results in generic solutions of optimal deployment problems, which indeed makes the solution independent from any routing algorithms. Moreover, a practical optimal deployment problem is formulated to find the cheapest WSN application that satisfies the targeted degree of partial connected coverage. Further, in this paper, the cost effectiveness of the node heterogeneity is investigated through comparing the heterogeneous WSNs with their homogeneous counterparts. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Remote-controlled switch (RCS) placement problem is used to optimally deploy the switches in distribution networks to enhance system reliability. The candidate locations of RCSs are usually assumed at the main feeder while the possible locations on the laterals are ignored. This study studies the impact of considering laterals as potential switch locations and demonstrates that deploying RCSs in laterals would change the optimal number and location of the switches. To do so, this study proposes a mathematical model for the switch deployment problem by taking into account the laterals. The proposed model is formulated in mixed integer linear programming format which can be solved via commercial solver in an effective runtime. The effectiveness of the model is scrutinised through simulating a sample radial distribution feeder, a standard test system, and a practical distribution network. Also, to illustrate the superiority of the proposed model, the results are compared with those achieved via previous models.
