Optimised blind image watermarking method based on firefly algorithm in DWT-QR transform domain

Firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the newly developed nature inspired optimisation algorithm, inspired by the flashing behaviour of fireflies that a firefly tends to be attracted towards other fireflies with higher brightness. Thus FA has two advantages: local attractions and automatic regrouping. Based on these good properties, a novel image watermarking method based on FA in discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-QR transform domain is proposed in this study. Structural similarity index measure and bit error rate are used in the objective function to trade-off invisibility and robustness. The experiment results show that the proposed image watermarking method not only meet the need of invisibility, but also has better or comparable robustness as compared with some related methods.

The aim of this study is to improve the performance of a wire fault diagnosis approach based on time-domain reflectometry (TDR). In this approach, the TDR response collected from measurements for a given (faulty) coaxial cable network is used as a reference for the cable network model response computed by an accurate analytical transmission line (ATL) method. The ATL model is iteratively tuned according to the outcome of the optimisation algorithm proposed. The advantage of the proposed ATL method over the more classic finite difference time-domain method is the extremely faster computational time which represents a significant factor for the diagnosis of faults in wiring networks. The proposed ATL method accurately provides the features of the resistance-inductance-conductance-capacitance-based model of a RG-58 coaxial cable employed as a device under test. The ATL model has been validated by comparison with measurement based and circuit simulations. Furthermore, seven experiments have been investigated in order to evaluate the performance of the ATL method for the diagnosis of wiring networks. The obtained results reveal that the ATL method together with the efficient optimisation algorithm is a reliable, efficient and fast method for the diagnosis of wiring networks.

Effective prediction model for Hungarian small-scale solar power output

Owing to critical role of photovoltaic (PV) power in oncoming energy market, an accurate PV power forecasting model is demanded. In this paper, an effective solar power prediction model composed of variational mode decomposition, information-theoretic feature selection, and forecasting engine with high learning capability is proposed. The feature selection method is based on information-theoretic criteria and an optimisation algorithm. The forecasting engine is multilayer perceptron neural network equipped with modified Levenberg-Marquardt learning algorithm. An evolutionary algorithm is also incorporated into the training mechanism of the forecasting engine to enhance its learning capability. Effectiveness of the proposed PV prediction model is illustrated on a Hungarian solar power plant.

In this study, the design approach for wireless power systems in the application of charging wristband wearable devices is studied. As the power transfer efficiency relates to the system parameters, the design approach includes an analytical model for available wireless power in planar circular coils with lateral and angular misalignments, which is typically the case in these applications. The model is then utilised in an optimisation algorithm to design the wireless power system such that maximum available power is transferred through the system. The practicality of the proposed wireless power transfer (WPT) system design is analysed in terms of positioning the power transmitter coil on a bed, while performing the power transfer during a sleeping period of the wearer. Experimental results validate the analytical model of mutual inductance variations and demonstrate the performance of the WPT system for this application.

Dynamical modelling and emulation of Li-ion batteries-supercapacitors hybrid power supply for electric vehicle applications

Modelling dynamic behaviours of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery and supercapacitor in electric vehicle applications is a key aspect for the emulation of the hybrid power supply. In this study, a dynamical model based on two non-linear equivalent circuits is developed to describe the characteristics of the battery and supercapacitor during both steady-state and transient conditions. The necessary parameters for the proposed model are extracted from measurement data in time and frequency domain using an optimisation algorithm. The developed model is coupled to power electronics devices fed by DC power supply to carry out a laboratory emulator of the hybrid power supply. This tool is mainly used for testing and verification of the electric vehicle performances with convenient and reproducible way. The proposed emulator avoids time-consuming preconditioning and safety problems generally caused by the misuse of electrochemical components such as the Li-ion battery. The modelling and experimental results show a good performance of the hybrid power supply emulator and confirm their feasibility over a wide range of operating points.

An approach to construction of a beam-type simplified model of a horizontal axis wind turbine composite blade based on the finite element method is proposed. The model allows effective and accurate description of low vibration bending modes taking into account the effects of coupling between flapwise and lead-lag modes of vibration transpiring due to the non-uniform distribution of twist angle in the blade geometry along its length. The identification of model parameters is carried out on the basis of modal data obtained by more detailed finite element simulations and subsequent adoption of the 'DIRECT' optimisation algorithm. Stable identification results were obtained using absolute deviations in frequencies and in modal displacements in the objective function and additional a priori information (boundedness and monotony) on the solution properties.

This study illustrates the aerodynamic and mechatronic design of a 1/75 scaled model of the DTU 10MW wind turbine to perform wind tunnel tests in floating offshore configuration. Due to the strong discrepancy of the Reynolds number between full and model scale (up to 150), a dedicated low-Reynolds airfoil (SD7032) was chosen for the aerodynamic design of the blades, and the final shape was defined based on a dedicated optimisation algorithm which had as target the matching of the scaled thrust force and the first flap-wise bending frequency, as it is thoroughly explained in the study. Furthermore, the mechatronic design is reported in terms of the design choices adopted to get the best target-oriented functionalities to the model (i.e. individual pitch control, bandwidth) and to reduce as much as possible the weights, greatly affecting the aero-elastic scaling. The results gathered during experimental campaigns at Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel, are reported confirming the validity of the design and manufacturing choices.

This paper investigates the potential impact of a fleet of electric vehicles charging on the cost of electricity generation, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and power system demand through low voltage residential demand-side management (DSM). The proposed optimisation algorithm is used to shift electric vehicles charging loads to minimize the combined impact of three key parameters: financial, environmental, and demand variability. The results show that it is effective to reshape the power demand and reduce electricity cost and GHG emissions without affecting people's driving patterns.
