A systematic review of optimal planning and deployment of distributed generation and energy storage systems in power networks

Climate change is encouraging a growing interest worldwide to increase renewable distributed generation (DG) integration into the power grid. DG is free from greenhouse gas emissions and can assist in mitigating the energy crisis and reducing energy costs. However, due to its variable nature and bidirectional power flows, high penetration of such DGs, particularly solar and wind, might create significant problems. Some of the issues could be related to reduced power quality, excessive power loss, and low utilization rate of power equipment. Optimal DG allocation can effectively alleviate these challenges by enhancing voltage stability, relieving the overloads of feeders, and improving the reliability of the power grid. Introducing energy storage systems (ESSs) in the network provide another possible approach to solve the above problems by stabilizing voltage and frequency. Therefore, it is essential to allocate distributed ESSs optimally on the distribution network to fully exploit their advantages. Enormous research effort has been put into these areas over the last decade by industries, utilities, and research communities. This paper presents an extensive review on the optimal planning and deployment of DGs, ESSs, and coordinated DGs and ESSs. This paper also will look at their strengths and weaknesses, the barriers to their implementation, and the associated technologies used in their implementation. Finally, this paper reviews the methods of uncertainty modelling in DG and ESS planning and their merits and drawbacks. This review includes a survey of the deployment planning approaches and investigates challenges with recom-mendations for future deployment. This review will be beneficial for use by utilities, researchers, investors, and stakeholders when considering the future deployment of DGs and ESSs in distribution networks to ensure a reliable and sustainable power system.

The gas permeability of cement mortar is a vital parameter for the reasonable design of relevant buildings. However, due to the large number of influence factors and the complex interaction mechanism, the correct prediction of the gas permeability for cement mortar is always a huge challenge. In this paper, a novel machine learning model was established by combining Mind Evolutionary algorithm (MEA) and the ensemble algorithm of Adaptive Boosting algorithm (ADA)-Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) to predict the stress-dependent gas permeability of cement mortar with different moisture contents based on the results of 1890 laboratory gas permeability experiments. The novel machine learning model combined by MEA and ADA-BPANN is firstly adopted in the prediction of the gas permeability of cement mortar. By comparing with the conventional machine learning algorithms, including Particle Swarm optimisation algorithm (PSO) and Genetic algorithm (GA) tuned ADA-BPANN, MEA tuned Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Random Forest (RF), the superior performance of MEA tuned ADA-BPANN has been validated. This new algorithm is with higher predicting precision, shorter training time, and the avoidance of local optimum and overfitting. Secondly, sensitivity analysis was carried out by adopting this proposed novel model, which indicates that the impact of relative moisture content on the gas permeability is the highest, followed by confining pressure, cyclic time and confining pressure loading/unloading stage. Thirdly, an analytical equation was proposed to assess the gas permeability that allows the usage of machine learning skills for the practitioners with limited machine learning knowledge. The present research highlights the potential of the MEA tuned ADA-BPANN model as a useful tool to assist in preciously estimating the stress-dependent gas permeability of cement mortar with different moisture contents. Evaluation of the Performance Degradation of a Metal Hydride Tank in a Real Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

In a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powered by a metal hydride tank, the performance of the tank is an indicator of the overall health status, which is used to predict its behaviour and make appropriate energy management decisions. The aim of this paper is to investigate how to evaluate the effects of charge/discharge cycles on the performance of a commercial automotive metal hydride hydrogen storage system applied to a real FCEV. For this purpose, a mathematical model is proposed based on uncertain physical parameters that are identified using the stochastic particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm combined with experimental measurements. The variation of these parameters allows an assessment of the degradation level of the tank's performance on both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Simulated results derived from the proposed model and experimental measurements were in good agreement, with a maximum relative error of less than 2%. The validated model was used to establish the correlations between the observed degradations in a hydride tank recovered from a real FCEV. The results obtained show that it is possible to predict tank degradations by developing laws of variation of these parameters as a function of the real conditions of the use of the FCEV (number of charging/discharging cycles, pressures, mass flow rates, temperatures).

A Hilbert transform sensitivity-based model-updating method for damage detection of structures with closely-spaced eigenvalues

In this paper, a novel method is proposed for damage detection of structures with closely-spaced eigenvalues. The proposed method uses a transformed form of the condensed frequency response function matrix each of whose columns is obtained as the sum of the unwrapped instantaneous Hilbert phase of the corresponding decomposed column of the original matrix using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) algorithm. A new sensitivity-based model updating equation is then developed, which uses the constructed new matrix as input. The constructed sensitivity-based equation is solved via the least squares method through iterations to update unknown structural damage indices in a finite element model of the structure. To demonstrate the capability of the proposed method, the problem of damage detection in a composite laminate plate and a spatial truss structure, as examples of structures with closely-spaced eigenvalues, is solved. Moreover, the results obtained from the proposed method are compared against two other methods from the literature. The results show that the proposed method is far more effective at updating damage indices when incomplete highly noisy data is available.

A new optimisation problem is proposed to facilitate a fast and reliable damage detection of structures with closely-spaced eigenvalues. The first stage of the proposed method identifies the most probable defective elements resulting in the elimination of healthy members from further investigation. This will further reduce the computational efforts of computing damage indices regarding the defective elements. The second stage of the proposed method exploits the proposed objective function to update the damage indices of the identified defective elements from the first stage. Two truss structures with multiple damaged elements in different damage scenarios are studied where measurements with different levels of noise are used as input to the proposed algorithm. Numerical results and comparison with previous studies demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in damage detection of structures with closely-spaced eigenvalues.

Parameter estimation of extended Jiles-Atherton hysteresis model based on ISFLA

This study introduces an extended Jiles-Atherton (JA) hysteresis model, which considers dynamic loss and anisotropy. The two considerations facilitate an accurate non-linearity representation of electromagnetic devices, thereby resulting in a precise agreement between the simulated and measured hysteresis loops. To achieve this goal, JA hysteresis model parameters must be estimated by an optimisation algorithm. Therefore, an improved shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (ISFLA) is proposed in this study. Differential evolution (DE) mutation operator, adaptive step size factor, and inertia weight factor are considered. Then, the implementation of the ISFLA is discussed using MATLAB. The proposed ISFLA is verified by the measured hysteresis loops of grain-oriented silicon toroidal core. The comparison between genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, DE, and ISFLA is discussed. Results show that the proposed ISFLA demonstrates better global optimum ability, lower computational burden, and faster convergence rate than the other three methods.

Secure beamforming method for artificial-noise-aided multiuser broadcast system with users of different importance under secrecy outage probability constraint

In this study, the authors proposed the optimal beamforming (BF) design for multiuser broadcast secure transmission under secrecy outage probability constraint with artificial noise technique. Different from former research papers, their model assumes that different users have different priority and importance. Some users are regarded as main users with a stricter constraint, which make the normal BF algorithm not to gain the best performance. For this reason, they proposed a new BF design method for this specific system model. To deal with intractable non-convex problems, they employed a series of optimisation algorithm like Bernstein-type inequality and second-order cone constraints method to transform these problems into solvable functions. After that, they show the feasibility of their new BF algorithm by Monte-Carlo simulation method, and analyse the influence on transmission and security performance caused by different system parameters. Furthermore, they compare the security performance of their method with the normal BF method, which demonstrates the advantage of the new BF method.

Optimal orientation of fibre composites for strength based on Hashin's criteria optimality conditions

The Hashin's strength criteria are usually employed in first ply failure and damage-onset analysis of fibre-reinforced composites. This work presents optimality conditions of local material orientations for these criteria, in terms of principal stresses and material strength parameters. Each criterion (matrix tensile/compressive, fibre tensile/compressive modes) has its conditions separately derived, analytically, based on a fixed stress field assumption. The conditions found show that orientations which coincide and do not coincide with principal stress directions may minimise local failure indices. These solutions are employed in a proposed algorithm, named HA-OCM (Hashin Optimality Criteria Method), which selectively satisfies the matrix failure modes (either tensile or compressive), iteratively and finite element-wise in composites. It is demonstrated that the HA-OCM is able to design single-layer plane structures with improved failure loads in comparison with designs following only maximum (in absolute) principal stress orientations. Results show that the material orientations have a trend to end up either aligned or at 90 degrees with maximum in absolute principal stress directions. Global optima for compliance are, however, not guaranteed. To give an idea of gains in terms of failure loads, some HA-OCM designs show improvements of 71% and 140%, for example, in comparison with principal stress design.

Open-circuit voltage decay: moving to a flexible method of characterisation

Open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) is a method to characterise minority carrier effective lifetime (tau(eff)). It is non-destructive, simple and low-cost. It has been mainly used in silicon p-n junctions. tau(eff) is not only a very important parameter to optimise device design but also to supervise process steps. It is not the only parameter we can obtain by OCVD. Due to the intrinsic space charge region capacitance of a p-n junction, the doping level of the lowest-doped region (N-l) and built-in potential (V-bi) are extractable. Moreover, it is also possible to obtain the shunt resistance (R-sh) value when it has a significant effect on the p-n junction behaviour. The authors first applied the well-established one-diode model in a transient regime to simulate OCVD signal. In a second step, they used an optimisation algorithm to fit the experimental curve of a silicon diode to extract tau(eff), N-l, V-bi and R-sh. These values were compared to those obtained from C-V and I-V. Results are promising and demonstrate for the first time, the flexibility of the OCVD method. It opens up the perspective for the development of add-on features of the method and for measuring short lifetime.

Efficient localisation approach for WSNs using hybrid DA-FA algorithm

Localisation has become a major attraction of research in recent years in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It is required for various applications like monitoring of objects placed in indoors and outdoors environments. The main requirement in localisation is to assign a location to each node, since multiple sensor nodes in WSN are used to retrieve information. The aim of this research is to address a WSN localisation problem using various optimisation techniques. The concept of single anchor node placement at the centre of sensing field with its projection using hexagonal pattern is introduced. In this study, a novel hybrid optimisation technique named as dragonfly-firefly algorithm (DA-FA) is proposed. DA is an optimisation algorithm recently suggested based on the dragonfly's static and dynamic swarming behaviour. The suggested hybrid technique combines the exploration capability of explore DA and Firefly algorithm's to exploit to obtain ideal global solutions. To check the effectiveness of DA-FA CEC 2019 benchmark functions are used for comparison with competitive algorithms. DA-FA converges fast and provide optimum solution for most of the benchmark functions. In addition, DA-FA outperforms well in terms of localisation error in comparison to existing localisation solutions.
