Research on design of unattended intelligent pharmacy system

An unattended intelligent pharmacy system which can automatically and efficiently send all kinds of boxed medicines is researched and developed in this paper. The storage and distribution of boxed medicines of the pharmacy system are realised through a newly designed automatic medicines rack. On this basis, a new matrix medicine storage tank control mechanism is developed. The distribution of medicines in a pharmacy is realised by AGV car with optimised path strategy, and the software of medicines taking report/call point inspection is compiled. The experimental results show that the unattended intelligent pharmacy system can achieve rapid medicines dispensing and significantly shorten the waiting time of patients. The patients' average waiting time of the unattended intelligent pharmacy system is shortened by 66.51% compared with that of manual dispensing. At the same time, its high-density storage and AGV delivery also significantly reduce the operation and maintenance costs and pharmacy area.

Demand-side management using a distributed initialisation-free optimisation in a smart grid

Due to the integration of the renewable generation and the distributed load that inherently uncertain and unpredictable, developing an efficient distributed management structure of such a complex system remains a challenging issue. Most of the existing works on the demand-side management concentrate on the centralised methods or need a proper initialisation process. This study proposed a demand-side management strategy that can solve the optimisation problem in a distributed manner without initialisation. The objective of the designed demand management system is to maximise the social welfare of a smart grid by controlling the active power economically. The proposed optimisation strategy that generates the optimal power references uses the neighbouring information while considering the local feasible constraints by using a projection operation. Furthermore, the optimisation algorithm is initialisation free, which avoids any initialisation process when plugging-in new customers or plugging-out power units, such as demand loads, battery energy storage systems and distributed generators. The proposed strategy only uses the neighbouring information, so that the proposed approach is scalable and potentially applicable to large-scale smart grids. The effectiveness and scalability of the proposed algorithm are established and verified through case studies.

optimisation of MG operation considering effects of power electronic converters

A prominent issue in microgrid (MG) cost optimisation is the consideration of variable parameters such as demand, wind speed, sun radiation intensity etc. This study deals with mitigating substantial deviation between study results and actual MG operation indices. The deviation is the result of ignoring the effects of power electronics devices in the optimisation algorithm. A new optimisation model is proposed to involve the main converter's restrictions in the optimisation process. For connecting renewable sources with uncertain outputs such as photovoltaic, wind, and also loads to a MG, using power electronic converters is inevitable. This study proposes an operation cost optimisation development by foreseeing the effects and limitations of power electronic devices, disregarding of which would undoubtedly lead to a notable deviation in optimisation results.

The growing attention in reducing the risk of collisions or groundings during the approach to a harbour or while navigating in narrow fairways, makes the escort activities of paramount importance for a safe navigation in different scenarios. To this end, since early-design stage, Classification Societies prescribe to evaluate the maximum steering and braking force the tug is capable to provide. The analysis is usually performed adopting simplified methods, grouping all propulsive devices together to solve the equilibrium on horizontal plane. In this work, an advanced equilibrium resolution method is proposed considering each propulsive device as an independent actuator. This method allows to simulate the behaviour of a steerable thruster, by means of a 4-quadrant modelling of a ducted propeller, considering cross-flow effect as well. The adoption of such enhanced method makes the estimate of escort performances more reliable. To this aim, the performance prediction obtained with simplified and advanced method are here compared for a reference escort tug.

Mix-model for optimisation of textural features applied to multiple sclerosis lesion-tumour segmentation

Segmentation of biomedical images plays an important role in many applications especially in medical imaging, forming an important step in enabling qualification in the field of medical research as well as clinical practices. Magnetic resonance imaging is normally used to distinguish and enumerate multiple sclerosis lesions in the brain. Recently multiple sclerosis lesion of segmentation is the challenging issue due to special variation, low size and unclear boundaries. Since usual technique for brain MRI tumour detection and classification is manual investigation but it is varied from person to person and also very time consuming. Many new methods have been proposed to segment lesions automatically. This paper proposed segmentation of MRI brain tumour using cellular automata and classification of tumour by pointing kernel classifier (PKC). The utilisation of modified Cuckoo search with the priority values and the PKC in proposed mix model for optimisation of textural features (M-MOTF) provides the significant improvement in classification performance with low dimensionality. The proposed system has been validated with the support of real time data set from Frederick National Laboratory and the experimental results showed improved performance.

Optimising the load path of compression-only thrust networks through independent sets

This paper presents network load path optimisation for the weight minimisation of compression-only thrust networks, allowing for the design of material efficient surface structures. A hybrid evolutionary and function-gradient optimisation process finds the optimal internal force state of the network, by manipulating the force densities of a selected number of edges based on the network indeterminacy. These selected edges are the independent sets, and are found through the Reduced Row Echelon form of the network's equilibrium matrix. It was found that networks can have certain independent sets that have a significant influence on both the stability of the optimisation algorithm, and in the final load path/volume of the structure. Finding the most effective independent sets was handled by data-driven methods, applied to many thousands of independent set trials. This provided insight into the behaviour of the underlying network and dramatically increased the rate of finding successful independent sets. The importance and weights of the network edges highlighted key areas of the network that allowed structural judgement and improvements to be made.

Remanufacturing has gained increasing attention due to its economic, environmental and societal benefits as well as its contribution to the sustainability of natural resources. Disassembly is the first and usually the most difficult process in remanufacturing a product. Disassembly sequence planning, which aims to find the optimal disassembly sequence, is required to improve efficiency and reduce cost. There have been many investigations in this field and several disassembly sequence planning methods have been developed. This article reviews the main existing disassembly sequence planning methods from the perspectives of disassembly mode, disassembly modelling and planning method. The characteristics of different methods are analysed and summarised from those perspectives. Future trends in disassembly sequence planning are also discussed to reveal gaps in existing research.

In this paper, the semi-empirical coefficients and exponents of an ice resistance prediction method, i.e. refined Lindqvist formula, are investigated. Thereby, the coefficients and exponents which are not fully based on analytical considerations or geometrical properties are substituted by variables. By means of a computer algorithm these variables are optimised within specific boundary limits with regard to the total resistance in ice. Furthermore, the state of the art ranges for the ice resistance portions induced at the water line and below the water line are considered. The optimisation is based on a set of scaled model tests with several ice breaking ship models under different conditions, i.e. ship speed and level ice thickness. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Fast algorithm for HEVC intra-coding implemented by preprocessing

Compared to previous video compression standards H.264/AVC, high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) introduces a recursive quad-tree structure in intra-coding and adds intra-mode from 9 to 35 to achieve higher coding efficiency. The update significantly improves the performance of intra-coding. However, it greatly increases the amount of computation, and this will increase the need for the fast algorithm and hardware design that can satisfy the real-time encoding of HEVC encoder. In this study, the authors propose a fast intra-coding algorithm based on analysis of original pixel gradient texture. The algorithm consists of two steps, fast coding unit size decision and reduction of candidate modes. The experimental results show that compared with the HM16.7 encoder, the optimisation algorithm can obtain 50.7% time reduction on average with 1.32% Bjontegaard distortion (BD)-rate increase and 0.07 dB BD-peak-signal-to-noise ratio loss. Meanwhile, this study designs a pre-processing hardware structure based on original pixels. With TSMC 90 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology, the proposed structure can achieve 625 MHz working frequency at the cost of 2094 gates, which can fulfil the throughput requirement of 8K x 4K@46 fps real-time encoding.

Cuckoo search algorithm with different distribution strategy

Cuckoo search (CS) is a new meta-heuristic search algorithm based on the obligate nest parasitism of cuckoos and combining the characteristic flight of some birds and fruit flies. In order to study the influence of distribution strategy on cuckoo search algorithm, in the paper, introduces Cauchy distribution, Gaussian distribution, Uniform distribution and Levy distribution, analysis the performance of cuckoo search algorithm by the method of pair combination. In order to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, 28 typical test functions proposed by CEC2013 were taken as examples for testing, and the experimental results showed the effectiveness of the algorithm. Simulation results show that the hybrid distribution of Levy distribution and Cauchy distribution can make the cuckoo search algorithm perform better.
