Hull geometry optimisation of wave energy converters: On the choice of the optimisation algorithm and the geometry definition

It is key in the development of wave energy systems to aim at designing economically competitive solutions that enable maximal annual energy production. Previous studies identify the Wave Energy Converter (WEC) structure, i.e. the hull, to have one of the largest cost reduction potentials. Due to this potential, geometry optimisation of WECs has been previously considered, however, most of these studies have been limited by the simplicity of the employed geometrical shapes and the lack of accurate cost models. It is, therefore, important to include an adaptable geometry definition capable of generating diverse WEC shapes, and to account for other factors that can have an effect on costs. These considerations result in a more challenging optimisation problem, and a more complex objective function. The goal of this study is to address the challenge of finding a suitable and efficient optimisation method for WEC geometry design. In this paper, different geometry definitions, such as using simple shapes or B-spline surfaces, and different meta-heuristic optimisation algorithms, such as genetic algorithms or particle swarm optimisation are applied to this problem to find the most suitable choices. Results show an improvement in final objective function values of up to 224% when using an adaptable geometry definition and up to 11% when employing the most suitable optimisation algorithm compared to previous results. In conclusion, the choice of the different elements of the optimisation formulation have a large impact on the quality of the optimisation results and should be based on preliminary studies as presented here.

Robust lane-detection algorithm based on improved symmetrical local threshold for feature extraction and inverse perspective mapping

Here, an extended version of the symmetrical local threshold (SLT) algorithm is introduced for lane feature extraction and used in a novel lane-detection system. The introduced feature map extractor utilises parallel lane border features as well as the dark-light-dark (DLD) pattern of the lane marking used in SLT. Hence, compared to the SLT, the true positive to positive rate of the calculated feature maps is increased from 69% to 86% on the ROMA dataset. In addition, the proposed algorithm supplies orientation information for the estimated feature points, which can be useful for many optimisation algorithms. Consequently, based on the estimated lane feature orientations, a global lane orientation is calculated and used for both enhancing the feature map and estimating a one-dimensional (1D) lateral offset likelihood function. Then, the estimated 1D functions are filtered temporally and up to two linear lane candidates are detected. For increased flexibility, robust fitting is applied to the feature points in the region of interest (ROI). Finally, based on the detection of the previous frame, a mask is created and applied to the next frame. When tested on 2301 road images, mean error in lateral offset is calculated as 4.1 pixel on the IPM images.

Time-constant control analysis of microwave differentiators

A model describing the time constant of a wide-band microwave differentiator is presented. The time constant combined with the amplitude response dictates the circuit behaviour of a microwave differentiator. By representing the formulations of differentiators in the discrete-time (or Z) domain, the authors implement the differentiators with equal-length transmission lines. The approach method consists of discrete signal processing techniques, transfer functions in the Z domain and optimisation algorithms. Three differentiators with different time constants and frequency bands are built and tested. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical values.

OPTIMIZING ACCELERATOR FOR CAD WORKSTATION

Sequential versions of those optimisation algorithms which are based on random search heuristics are often too slow to be of value to the interactive user of a CAD workstation. A significant gain in speed can be achieved by using concurrent algorithms to drive an optimising accelerator attached to the workstation. The paper discusses the design and performance of a hardware accelerator which incorporates INMOS transputers. Concurrent versions of two algorithms are described, one relevant to combinatorial optimisation and the other to global optimisation. The mapping of these algorithms on to the transputer hardware is discussed. The application and performance of each algorithm is illustrated by means of a representative problem from the field of electronic engineering.

An evolutionary algorithm for pure fuzzy flowshop scheduling problems

The pure flowshop scheduling problem is here investigated from a perspective considering me uncertainty associated with the execution of shop floor activities. Being the flowshop problem is NP complete, a large number of heuristic algorithms have been proposed in literature to determine an optimal solution. Unfortunately, these algorithms usually assume a simplifying hypothesis: the problem data are assumed as deterministic, i.e. job processing times and the due dates are expressed through a unique value, which does not reflect the real process variability. For this reason, some authors have recently proposed the use of a fuzzy set theory to model the uncertainty in scheduling problems. In this paper, a proper genetic algorithm has been developed for solving the fuzzy flowshop scheduling problem. The optimisation involves two different objectives: the completion time minimisation and the due date fulfilment;both the single and multi-objective configurations have been considered. A new ranking criterion has been proposed and its performance has been tested through a set of test problems. A numerical analysis confirms the efficiency of the proposed optimisation procedure.

Stochastic optimisation-based methods for the identification of the physical parameters of a metal hydride tank

In this paper, three optimisation methods are used to determine the parameters of a commercial metal hydride hydrogen tank, considered as a grey box in which the thermophysical parameters are unknown. These parameters are essential for the development of energy management strategies and the study of tank ageing. A model of the hydride tank containing an AB5 intermetallic was developed and experimentally validated. An absorption test campaign of the studied tank was carried out to collect data necessary for the optimisation algorithms. A comparative study was carried out in accordance with the speed of convergence and precision between the three stochastic optimisation methods: Particle Swarm optimisation (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution (DE). The results of the simulation of the storage system using the parameters determined by the algorithms show a remarkably close agreement with the experimental data, with a maximum error of 2.1%.(c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Partial discharge localisation methodology for power transformers based on improved acoustic propagation route search algorithm

The localisation of partial discharge (PD) sources using the acoustic emission (AE) technique has attracted increasing research attention. The complicated propagation routes and wave-type conversion in power transformer can induce considerable localisation error. In this paper, the catadioptric phenomenon of AE wave propagation is explained in detail. With the incident angle varying, the wave type of the direct wave in tank wall could convert and the velocity will change accordingly. A transformer model is established in which each node refers to a suspected PD position and a shortest route search algorithm is proposed to calculate the shortest path between two nodes in this model. However, the fastest route is most significant to PD localisation rather than the shortest route when TDOA method is used. As a result, an improved propagation route search (IPRS) algorithm, which can recreate the propagation process and calculate the fastest AE routes, is proposed to localise the PD origin. To verify the feasibility of the IPRS algorithm, localisation experiments were performed in 35 and 110 kV transformers, respectively. Compared with other present localisation methods, such as the Chan algorithm, the genetic algorithm and the imperial competitive algorithm, the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce localisation error.

An energy-efficient predictive control for HVAC systems applied to tertiary buildings based on regression techniques

Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems represent an important amount of the total energy use in office buildings, accounting for near 30%. Moreover, in countries affected by extreme climates HVAC systems' contribution to energy demand increases up to 50%. Therefore, the automation of energy efficient strategies that act on the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) in order to improve building energy use becomes increasingly relevant. This paper delves into the devising of a novel HVAC optimization framework, coined as Next24h-Energy, which consists on a two-way communication system, an enhanced database management system and a set of machine learning algorithms based on random forest (RF) regression techniques mainly focused on providing an energy-efficient predictive control of the HVAC system. Therefore, the proposed framework achieves optimal HVAC ON/OFF and mechanical ventilation (MV) schedule operation that minimizes the energy consumption while keeps the building between a predefined indoor temperature margins. Simulation results assess the performance of the proposed Next 24 h-Energy framework at a real office building named Mikeletegi 1 (M1) in Donostia-San Sebastian (Spain) yielding to excellent results and significant energy savings by virtue of its capability of adapting the parameters that control the HVAC schedule in a daily basis without affecting user comfort conditions. Specifically, the energy reduction for the test period is estimated in 48% for the heating and 39% for the cooling consumption. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged in various applications due to their outstanding characteristics. The most common technique for producing CNTs with high yield and quality is known as chemical vapour deposition (CVD). However, manufacturers rely on conventional experimental studies to produce CNTs, which raise issues such as time, cost, and dealing with toxic materials. Alternatively, modelling and optimisation using metaheuristic algorithms are suggested to address these issues. This paper uses response surface methodology (RSM) for modelling work, while four metaheuristic algorithms are employed for optimisation. The regression and mathematical models, correlations, and significant CNTs process parameters are identified, analysed, and validated using RSM. The optimisation process and result are validated using different performance measure metrics and supported by other researchers. The CNTs yield and quality values improvement percentages in this paper are up to 36.45% compared to the referred original work.

Appraisal of water quality indices for service reservoirs in water distribution networks

The use of water quality indices to aggregate pollution loads in rivers has been widely studied, with researchers using various sub-indices and aggregation methods. These have been used to combine various quality variables at a sampling point in a river into an overall water quality index to compare the state of water quality in different river reaches. Service reservoirs in a water distribution network, like rivers, have complex mixing mechanisms, are subjected to various water quality variables and are variably sized and sited. Water quality indices and the relevant sub-indices are formulated here and applied to service reservoirs within a water distribution network. This is in an attempt to compare holistically the performance of service reservoirs in solutions of optimisation algorithms with regards to water quality.
