Confocal techniques allow the user to achieve optically sectioned images with significantly enhanced axial and improved lateral resolution compared to widefield methods. Unfortunately, as one images more deeply within a sample, sample induced aberrations lead to a significant reduction in image resolution and contrast. Using adaptive optic techniques, we report on the effectiveness of a number of algorithms for removing sample induced aberrations. The viability and efficiency at a number of fitness parameters used in the optimisation routines is also considered.

An evolutionary algorithm for pure fuzzy flowshop scheduling problems

The pure flowshop scheduling problem is here investigated from a perspective considering me uncertainty associated with the execution of shop floor activities. Being the flowshop problem is NP complete, a large number of heuristic algorithms have been proposed in literature to determine an optimal solution. Unfortunately, these algorithms usually assume a simplifying hypothesis: the problem data are assumed as deterministic, i.e. job processing times and the due dates are expressed through a unique value, which does not reflect the real process variability. For this reason, some authors have recently proposed the use of a fuzzy set theory to model the uncertainty in scheduling problems. In this paper, a proper genetic algorithm has been developed for solving the fuzzy flowshop scheduling problem. The optimisation involves two different objectives: the completion time minimisation and the due date fulfilment;both the single and multi-objective configurations have been considered. A new ranking criterion has been proposed and its performance has been tested through a set of test problems. A numerical analysis confirms the efficiency of the proposed optimisation procedure.

Path planning in construction sites: performance evaluation of the Dijkstra, A*, and GA search algorithms

This paper presents the application of path planning in construction sites according to multiple objectives. It quantitatively evaluates the performance of three optimisation algorithms namely: Dijkstra, A*, and Genetic algorithms that are used to find multi-criteria paths in construction sites based on transportation and safety-related cost. During a construction project, site planners need to select paths for site operatives and vehicles, which are characterised by short distance, low risks and high visibility. These path evaluation criteria are combined using a multi-objective approach. The criteria can be optimised to present site planners with the shortest path, the safest path, the most visible path or a path that reflects a combination of short distance, low risk and high visibility. The accuracy of the path solutions and the time complexities of the optimisation algorithms are compared and critically analysed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a mathematical formulation for the optimum design of a new activated sludge WWTP. The WWTP optimum design problem has been formulated as a Mathematical Programming problem, which is solved through a nonlinear optimisation method. The plant model has been based on the ASM 1. The minimum volume of the biological reactors and the minimum total cost (including construction and exploitation costs) have been considered as optimisation criteria. Some practical results are also included, using as a case study the design of the second stage of the Galindo-Bilbao WWTP.

Current-mode group-delay equalisation using pole-zero mirroring technique

The authors describe an efficient method for designing current-mode group-delay equalisers, The method is based on introducing zeros into the right-hand s-plane by mirroring the Doles of an LC ladder network. This is achieved by developing a current-mode model capable of implementing the pole-zero mirroring technique. Using multiple-output OTAs and grounded capacitors, the model is used to derive an nth-order active group-delay equaliser structure which is simpler, has better correction accuracy and is less sensitive when compared to cascade approach based equalisers. The equaliser design involves two optimisation algorithms. The first algorithm generates a polynomial function whose group-delay response equalises the filter response. The second algorithm produces the equaliser component values as a result of solving a set of nonlinear equations generated from coefficient matching the equaliser transfer function to the polynomial generated from the first algorithm. Simulated results with CMOS OTAs and measured results based on discrete realisation of a 6th-order equaliser are included. The results demonstrate that the equaliser can effectively compensate the delay characteristics of a 7th-order 5.75MHz lowpass elliptic video filter to < 5 ns ripple over 90% of the filter passband.

The paper proposes an efficient algorithm for determining the stochastic user equilibrium solution for logit-based loading. The commonly used Method of Successive Averages typically has a very slow convergence rate. The new algorithm described here uses Williams' result [ Williams, H. C. W. L. (1977) On the formation of travel demand models and economic evaluation measures of user benefit. Environment and Planning 9A(3), 285-344] which enables the expected value of the perceived travel costs S-rs to be readily calculated for any flow vector x. This enables the value of the Sheffi and Powell objective function [Sheffi, Y. and Powell, W. B. (1982) An algorithm for the equilibrium assignment problem with random link times. Networks 12(2), 191-207], and its gradient in any specified search direction, to be calculated. It is then shown how, at each iteration, an optimal step length along the search direction can be easily estimated, rather than using the pre-set step lengths, thus giving much faster convergence. The basic algorithm uses the standard search direction (towards the auxiliary solution). In addition the performance of two further versions of the algorithm are investigated, both of which use an optimal step length but alternative search directions,based on the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell function minimisation method. The first is an unconstrained and the second a constrained version. Comparisons are made of all three versions of the algorithm, using a number of test networks ranging from a simple three-link network to one with almost 3000 links. It is found that for all but the smallest network the version using the standard search direction gives the fastest rate of convergence. Extensions to allow for multiple user classes and elastic demand are also possible. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of existing optimal VAr planning tools on utility systems

Findings of a recently completed EPRI project conducting a comprehensive evaluation of optimal VAr planning/OPF tools are reported. Three selected tools were adapted to address VAr allocation studies on four large-scale utility systems. The results obtained indicate that the use of such tools offers significant savings in cost of added MVAr requirements and the number of allocated sites with reasonable and manageable computer execution times. Based on the adaptation requirements for the different programs and studies conducted, recommendations on enhancement areas for the selected tools are provided, One of the major concerns in these studies should be the implementability of the results. This requires careful design including assignment of controls and constraints that can be implemented in the field together with the available tools to provide such requirements.

The contributions of this paper are two-fold: first, we introduce a novel, axiomatically defined, object-oriented data model called the Demeter kernel model;and secondly, we present abstraction and optimisation algorithms and their relationships for designing classes from objects in the kernel model. We analyse several computational problems underlying the class design process, which is divided into two phases;a learning phase and an optimisation phase. This study focuses on approximation algorithms for the optimisation phase and aims to lead to a better understanding and a partial automation of the object-oriented design process. The algorithms and the theory presented here have been implemented in the C + + Demeter System, a CASE tool for object-oriented design and programming.

CONTROL ASPECTS OF INTRAAORTIC BALLOON PUMPING - AN OVERVIEW

Temporary or permanent, internal or external, in-series or bypass cardiac assist devices are examined with emphasis on intraaortic balloon pumping. Physiological and clinical consequences of the medical assistance are discussed. Major advantages of the devices are to provide adequate perfusion and, secondarily, to unload the heart and to reduce oxygen consumption of the failing myocardium. Major problems with the cardiac assist devices are related to synchronization with the natural heart, or proper timing, and to the determination of suitable control variables. Optimization algorithms based on the selected performance criteria and computer-based automatic controls are instituted to overcome some of these shortcomings. Finally schemes of automatic control of implantable assist devices are discussed
