The class of 1-bit Multi-Step Look-Ahead (MSLA) S D modulators is presented. They take into account current and future quantization errors improving upon the stability and noise shaping characteristics of conventional 1-bit S D modulators. The MSLA modulator system is found to be equivalent to a number of parallel conventional S D modulators sharing a multi-input 1-bit quantizer. The number of look-ahead steps along with other design parameters enable fine-tuning of performance vs. hardware complexity according to the application. The performance of MSLA modulators for various design parameter values is investigated, highlighting their advantages in a multitude of applications like digital transmitters, class-D power amplifiers and DACs.

It is significant to promote the power utilization efficiency nowadays for lack of on-board power resource in satellite communication systems. A power allocation model that aims at getting the maximum system capacity of joint repeater gain setting and power allocation is set up in the paper. Afterwards, the joint power allocation and repeater gain setting optimization algorithm is proposed. The algorithm based on duality theory and steepest descent algorithm isn't a convex function for the repeater gain. A method is put forward to work out the optimization problem and try to prove the algorithm can obtain the optimal results. The simulation results show that the algorithm designed in the paper can get the power allocation for the optimum transparent repeater gain value and the maximum system capacity.

For complex environment in the mine, a wireless sensor node location mechanism based on a combination of RSSI ranging and genetic simulated annealing algorithm is proposed. Wireless signal transmission loss model in the mine was researched and used for RSSI ranging. Location problem is as an optimization problem to locate by improved genetic simulated annealing algorithm. Simulation results show that the location mechanism in the mine reduce the location error compared to the classic weighted centroid location algorithm and the DV-HOP algorithm.

Color images such as satellite images (remote sensing images) and some natural images exhibit poor fuzziness in boundaries, complex background, and non-uniform illumination. This article presents a new approach intended to produce more sophisticated and reliable segmentation of such color images, which are based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and differential evolution (DE) algorithm that upholds optimum result during iterations. The proposed methodology augments the robustness and effectiveness of the traditional GLCM algorithm. Performance of the presented technique is evaluated through different tests conducted over various natural and satellite colored images. The simulation results validate the overall accuracy obtained by the proposed GLCM-DE approach, and the methodology was found to be superior to other optimization algorithm based techniques.

Four-factor Carhart alphas of passive indices should be zero, but recent empirical evidence shows otherwise. We propose an optimization algorithm that makes small (fixed) adjustments to the time series of the market, size, value, and momentum factors, which ensures a zero alpha for any (single) self-designated benchmark index of a mutual fund. Our "adjusted factors" can then be used to estimate a mutual fund's "adjusted alpha." We test this methodology on a sample of 1,281 active and 102 tracker U.S. equity mutual funds (reporting S&P 500 index as their prospectus benchmark). Our time series adjustment of the Carhart 4 factors leads to an increase (decrease) in a fund's "adjusted alpha" in periods of fund-benchmark underperformance (outperformance). On the whole, our "adjusted alphas" of both active and tracker funds are statistically significantly negative. This is particularly pronounced for tracker funds.

Demand side management (DSM) would become an important method to guarantee the stability and reliability of the innovative energy structure model, have received increasing attention. DSM is regarded as an integrated technology solution for planning, operation, monitoring and management of building utility activities. However, there are several problems and technical challenges on the research level of fundamental methodology, which causes difficulties for the practical application of intelligent DSM control strategy. Therefore, optimization would play a vital role in the implementation process of DSM. A real case study was presented to demonstrate how to relieve and solve the existing technical challenges by the application effective optimization strategy and methods of DSM. At last, several possible research directions, that application of intelligent methods in the development of DSM optimization techniques, were presented.

We developed a techno-economic network planning tool for deployment of PON networks in large cities involving hundreds of thousands of end-users. The tool use techno-economic data and street-aware algorithms to estimate the global cost of the network. In the present new work, we extend the application scenario of our planning tool to estimate the increase of cost when different types of protection strategies are introduced in PON networks.

A method to calculate the transfer functions of Multi-Step Look-Ahead (MSLA) Sigma Delta modulators is presented. MSLA Sigma Delta modulators exhibit better noise shaping characteristics and stability than conventional ones. They are comprised of a number of conventional Sigma Delta modulators in parallel, sharing a multi-input 1-bit output quantizer. MSLA modulators are highly nonlinear systems due to the multi-input quantizer. Modeling of the quantizer using conventional linearization methods does not give satisfactory results. Therefore, this work applies system identification methods to derive the linearized MSLA modulator system transfer functions. More specifically the Vector Fitting algorithm is used for the linearization of a number of MSLA modulators. The obtained transfer functions are in very good agreement with simulation results, showcasing the effectiveness of the applied methods.
