A controller is the most important part of an automatic control system. Its main purpose is to receive the signals from a transmitter and to compare it with a reference value. Depending on the error the controller sends a control signal to an actuator, so that the controlled variable to be equal with the reference value. The most used algorithm by a controller is the PID algorithm. In this paper, two methods of determining the optimum values of the tuning parameters for the PID controller will be presented, using case studies. The optimization criteria are the integral criteria, the square of the error between reference and controlled value being taken into consideration. The results consisted in the optimal values of the PID tuning parameters (gain and reset) for the analyzed cases associated to a temperature control system.

Formulating problems rigorously in terms of optimization principles has become a dominating approach in the fields of machine learning and computer vision. However, the systems described in these fields are in some respects different to integrated, modular, and embodied systems, such as the ones we aim to build in robotics. While representing systems via optimality principles is a powerful approach, relying on it as the sole approach to robotics raises substantial challenges. In this article, we take this as a starting point to discuss which ways of representing problems should be best-suited for robotics. We argue that an adequate choice of system representation-e.g. via optimization principles-must allow us to reflect the structure of the problem domain. We discuss system design principles, such as modularity, redundancy, stability, and dynamic processes, and the degree to which they are compatible with the optimization stance or instead point to alternative paradigms in robotics research. This discussion, we hope, will bring attention to this important and often ignored system-level issue in the context of robotics research.

The article examines a problem of searching for new energy-efficient technological solutions in alumina production, which is characterized by nonlinearity, inertia and closedness. It suggests a method to solve this problem on the basis of modeling of the production process and development of the optimizing function based on production cost and obtaining values of the process variables.

The use of anthropomorphic mechanical hands allows the execution of complex manipulation tasks and, therefore, its use is increasing, both in humanoid robots and mobile manipulators. The planning of the motions of these hands is not easy due to the high number of degrees of freedom (DOF) involved. Even when they may be mechanically independent, these degrees of freedom can be artificially coupled in order to mimic the human hand motions by using synergies, which in its turn results in a lower subspace where to perform the motion planning, as previously done by the authors using a PRM. This paper extends this idea by using an RRT*, that differently from other sampling-based planners, is an asymptotically optimal method. The optimization function selected evaluates the alignment of the path to the directions defined by the synergies, thus favoring human-like motions. The proposal is conceptually illustrated with a simple 2 DOF planar robot and applied to a 13 DOF mechanical hand.

Helmet protection to vulnerable two wheeler riders presents many challenges including those of weight, ergonomics appearance and convenience. Safety provided to a two wheeler riders head is mainly dependent on the level of shock getting propagated to the brain during the accident situations and therefore the design of the layer of shock absorbing padding assumes great importance. This padding, generally made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) or of state of art materials needs to be optimized. Helmets prototypes using an external hard shell made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) were built to the different thicknesses and impact absorption tests on different types of test rigs were conducted

Predicting Metabolic Fluxes Using Gene Expression Differences As Constraints

A standard approach to estimate intracellular fluxes on a genome-wide scale is flux-balance analysis (FBA), which optimizes an objective function subject to constraints on (relations between) fluxes. The performance of FBA models heavily depends on the relevance of the formulated objective function and the completeness of the defined constraints. Previous studies indicated that FBA predictions can be improved by adding regulatory on/off constraints. These constraints were imposed based on either absolute [21], [3] or relative [20] gene expression values. We provide a new algorithm that directly uses regulatory up/down constraints based on gene expression data in FBA optimization (tFBA). Our assumption is that if the activity of a gene drastically changes from one condition to the other, the flux through the reaction controlled by that gene will change accordingly. We allow these constraints to be violated, to account for posttranscriptional control and noise in the data. These up/down constraints are less stringent than the on/off constraints as previously proposed. Nevertheless, we obtain promising predictions, since many up/down constraints can be enforced. The potential of the proposed method, tFBA, is demonstrated through the analysis of fluxes in yeast under nine different cultivation conditions, between which approximately 5,000 regulatory up/down constraints can be defined. We show that changes in gene expression are predictive for changes in fluxes. Additionally, we illustrate that flux distributions obtained with tFBA better fit transcriptomics data than previous methods. Finally, we compare tFBA and FBA predictions to show that our approach yields more biologically relevant results.

Experimental study of heat transfer characteristics for a refrigerator by using reverse heat loss method

The present study has been carried out to predict the heat transfer characteristics of a residential refrigerator through insulation wall by using reverse heat loss method. The temperature time history characteristics were measured to achieve the steady state condition. In this experiment the steady state condition was reached at about 20 h of heating. The temperature and heat inputs were then averaged with one hour data and considered as the steady state temperature and heat input. From the measured values of temperature and heat input, one can conclude that, the temperature differences between the inside and outside of a refrigerator has a nearly linear relationship with heat input. The overall heat transfer coefficients have been derived by introducing the optimal heat loss function to analyze the heat loss characteristics. The accuracy of heat loss prediction has been checked with various experimental data and the normalized errors of the obtained result are found to be within 2.5%. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. We consider the blind recovery problem such that images embedded with side information are given, and we want to obtain the side information under some prescribed constraints. In this case, the system equation becomes y = Ax + b where in addition to the unknown A and x, b also is an unknown quantity and but clearly not a noise component. We assume that several images with the same embedding side information are given, and the image processing to b is described as the perturbation of A. We formulate the optimization function to obtain A, b and x, under the constraint of some finite brightness levels i.e. finite alphabets.
