Long-term evolution of airport networks: optimization model and its application to the United States

In this article, we introduce an optimization model aimed to assist aviation authorities in their strategic decisions regarding the long-term expansion of a network of airports. The objective is to maximize total system throughput for a given budget taking into account the capacity of the airports and the impact of travel costs upon demand. The results that can be obtained through the application of the model are first illustrated for a hypothetical small-size network and then in a study regarding the evolution of the network of the principal airports of the United States. Establishment of a Near-Field Photolithography Processing Experiment Prediction model and Parameter optimization model

For analysis using the Taguchi method, the L18 or L27 orthogonal array is usually adopted. However, this requires many experiments (18 or 27 runs, respectively), which takes time and increases costs. This paper proposes a progressive Taguchi neural network model that combines the Taguchi method with an artificial neural network (ANN), and constructs a prediction model for near field photolithography experiments. The analytical results of the progressive Taguchi neural network model show that, because there are few training examples in the Stage 1 preliminary network, there is a significant fluctuation the network prediction values. In the Stage 2 refining network the prediction effect in the region around the Taguchi factor level points is not bad, but the prediction in the region more remote from the learning and training examples has greater error. The Stage 3 precise network can provide optimal prediction results for the full field. Finally, we combine a near-field optical photolithography fabrication experiment prediction model and the Levenberg Marquardt search algorithm to establish a near-field optic photolithography fabrication parameter optimization model. The near-field photolithography fabrication parameter optimization model established in this paper can improve experimental accuracy and has referential value for near-field photolithography fabrication applications.

Dynamic attribution of water quality indexes in a multi-reservoir optimization model

In the southern regions of Mediterranean Europe, the greatest part of water resources for supply systems come from artificial reservoirs. Eutrophication is one of the most serious problems affecting the quality of water stored in reservoirs. A simplified approach that includes water quality aspects as water use limiting factors in a multi-reservoir optimization model can be achieved by adoption of the Trophic State Index (TSI). This paper makes some improvements on the optimization model already presented by Sechi and Sulis in the management of large systems. Particularly, it addresses the possibility of dynamic attribution of quality indexes in the LP model. The application of the optimization approach to different operating rules in a real multi-reservoir system in southern Sardinia highlights the need for joint consideration of quality and quantity aspects for effective water management.

Energy conservation and emission reduction path selection in China: A simulation based on Bi-Level multi-objective optimization model

Aiming at the bi-level multi-objective characteristic of the energy-environment-economy(3E) system of China, this paper constructed a bi-level multi-objective optimization model. Six scenarios were simulated in preference to energy saving, emission reduction and economic development. And energy consumption, carbon emission and economic development were analyzed in different scenarios during the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020). The following results were obtained: during the 13th five-year plan, the national targets of energy consumption, carbon emission and economic development are easily achievable. However, it is hard for most regions to achieve their energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER) targets when accomplishing their own economic targets. In other words, regional economic targets mismatch their ECER targets. The effects of ECER are not ideal in the energy saving scenario and the carbon emission reduction scenario, while they are relatively satisfactory in the economic development scenario. The win-win" situation between upper-level and lower-level is realizable in the economic development scenario, i.e., high-quality economic development may germinate good effects on ECER.

A novel stiffness optimization model of space telescopic boom based on locking mechanism

The deployable telescopic boom,whose mass and stiffness play crucial roles,is extensively used in the design of space-deployable ***,the most existing optimal design that neglects the influence of the locking mechanisms in boom joints cannot raise the whole stiffness while reducing the boom *** tackle this challenge,a novel optimization model,which utilizes the arrangement of the locking mechanisms to achieve synchronous improvement of the stiffness and mass,is *** proposed optimization model incorporates a novel joint stiffness model developed based on an equivalent parallel mechanism that enables the consideration of multiple internal stiffness factors of the locking mechanisms and tubes,resulting in more accurate representations of the joint stiffness *** analysis shows that the proposed stiffness model achieves more than at least 11% improved accuracy compared with existing ***,case verification shows that the proposed optimization model can improve stiffness while effectively reducing mass,and it is applied in boom optimization design.

An outcome-based process optimization model using fuzzy-based association rules

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an outcome-based process optimization model which can be deployed in companies to enhance their business operations, strengthening their competitiveness in the current industrial environment. To validate the approach, a case example has been included to assess the practicality and validity of this approach to be applied in actual environment. Design/methodology/approach This model embraces two approaches including: fuzzy logic for mimicking the human thinking and decision making mechanism;and data mining association rules approach for optimizing the analyzed knowledge for future decision-making as well as providing a mechanism to apply the obtained knowledge to support the improvement of different types of processes. Findings The new methodology of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated in a case study and the algorithm shows its potential to determine the primary factors that have a great effect upon the final result of the entire operation comprising a number of processes. In this case example, relevant process parameters have been identified as the important factors causing significant impact on the result of final outcome. Research limitations/implications The proposed methodology requires the dependence on human knowledge and personal experience to determine the various fuzzy regions of the processes. This can be fairly subjective and even biased. As such, it is advisable that the development of artificial intelligence techniques to support automatic machine learning to derive the fuzzy sets should be promoted to provide more reliable results. Originality/value Recent study on the relevant topics indicates that an intelligent process optimization approach, which is able to interact seamlessly with the knowledge-based system and extract useful information for process improvement, is still seen as an area that requires more study and investigation. The problem of inter-sectoral water allocation is investigated for the utilizable water in the Cauvery river basin in the state of Karnataka, India. This paper aims to maximize the total benefit of available and utilizable water while trying to ensure a certain basic water right for every individual. It also aims to meet irrigation requirements as put forward by government (central or state) in drought contingency plan. In this context, a novel nonlinear optimization model is developed which utilizes hydro-agroeconomic data collected from multiple sources. This optimization model allocates the available water among different competing sectors which includes municipality, industries and agriculture. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis evaluates the economic impact of different parameters of competing demands such as water availability, population and basic water right (quantity). The results of this study reveal that the basic water right for essential needs can be ensured with integrated management of available surface water resources. This novel optimization model and policy analysis can be readily applied to other river basins across the globe.

An optimization model under interval and fuzzy uncertainties for a by-product gas system of an iron and steel plant

The effective utilization of by-product gas is essential for achieving the targets of energy conservation and emission reduction of iron and steel plants in China. The application of deterministic optimization methods may lead to oversimplification and inaccurate estimation of system parameters, and even to system failure. The major contributions made by this study are the development of a gas scheduling optimization model under fuzzy and interval uncertainties and it application to the gas scheduling system of the Baotai steel plant. The integration of type-1 and type-2 fuzzy sets and interval numbers was first used to describe specific model parameters, and the reduced fuzzy chance-constrained programming algorithm and interactive two-step interval algorithm were used for model solution. Compared with practical allocation patterns, it is shown that the proposed model could offer better solutions with more outstanding performance in rapid response to production fluctuations, as well as increases in system revenue.

A novel hydrogen supply chain optimization model - Case study of Texas and Louisiana

The increasing political momentum advocating for decarbonization efforts has led many governments around the world to unveil national hydrogen strategies. Hydrogen is viewed as a potential enabler of deep decarbonization, notably in hard -to -abate sectors such as the industry. A multi -modal, hourly resolved, linear programming model was developed to assess the infrastructure requirements of a low -carbon supply chain over a large region. It optimizes the deployment of infrastructure from 2025 up to 2050 by assessing four years: 2025, 2030, 2040, and 2050, and is location agnostic. The considered infrastructure encompasses several technologies for production, transmission, and storage. model results illustrate supply chain requirements in Texas and Louisiana. Edge cases considering 100% electrolytic production were analyzed. Results show that by 2050, with an assumed industrial demand of 276 TWh/year, Texas and Louisiana would require 62 GW of electrolyzers, 102 GW of onshore wind, and 32 GW of solar panels. The resulting levelized cost of hydrogen totaled $5.6 - 6.3/kgH 2 in 2025, decreasing to $3.2 - 3.5/ kgH 2 in 2050. Most of the electricity production occurs in Northwest Texas thanks to high capacity factors for both renewable technologies. Hydrogen is produced locally and transmitted through pipelines to demand centers around the Gulf Coast, instead of electricity being transmitted for electrolytic production co -located with demand. Large-scale hydrogen storage is highly beneficial in the system to provide buffer between varying electrolytic hydrogen production and constant industrial demand requirements. In a system without low-cost storage, liquid and compressed tanks are deployed, and there is a significant renewable capacity overbuild to ensure greater electrolyzer capacity factors, resulting in higher electricity curtailment.
