A MINLP multi-objective optimization model for operational planning of a case study CCHP system in urban China

Urban energy systems comprise various supply side technologies, by which heating, cooling and electricity energy are produced, converted and consumed in a given urban area. The number of alternative arrangements of technologies introduces many degrees of freedom, particularly where large numbers of buildings and networks are in play. The problem being modeled in the present study is to determine the best combination of technologies to meet the energy demand of district buildings subject to practical constraints. This district planning aims to establish a smart micro-grid for the application of renewable and clean energy. A range of technologies including gas turbine, absorption chiller, electrical chiller, condensing boiler, ground source heat pump, PV, electrochemical storage, heat storage, ice storage airconditioning system etc., have been considered as alternative supply side technologies. A MINLP model is developed to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. Results are described by four scenarios, namely baseline scenario, low energy bill scenario, low CO2 emissions scenario and integrated scenario, showing that a significant reduction is achievable in net present value, primary energy saving and CO2 emissions by the installation of roof-top PV, ground source heat pump, natural gas-based CCHP and storage systems. In the context of project management, the attention given to project portfolio management has increased in recent years. The use of mathematical programming for portfolio management is also on the rise, because it integrates the project interactions with the multiple objectives of portfolio management into a single model. Among the possible objectives, recent studies have paid special attention to the emerging objective of future preparedness, which has not yet been incorporated into the existing mathematical models. This paper presents a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization model for portfolio selection that considers four main performance measures for project management, namely, value maximization, strategic alignment, balance, and future preparedness. Given the importance of the last measure, the purpose of this paper is to provide a more complete model that provides the marginal contribution and the best combination of projects according to the needs of the company. The model is tested using real data from two companies, one in Brazil and one in Canada, and the results obtained are coherent with their respective practices.

A spreadsheet-based optimization model for the integrated problem of producing and distributing a major weekly newsmagazine

In this paper, we address the problem of producing and distributing the Brazilian newsmagazine Epoca, a major weekly publication with one of the 10 largest circulations in the world. This real-world problem had been puzzling magazine publishers in Brazil and remained unsolved for many years. We propose an innovative mixed-integer-linear programming model to determine the number and location of the industrial facilities that should produce the magazines, what destinations should be assigned to each selected facility;the production sequencing and the modes of transportation (air or truck). Our model aims to minimize the total cost while adhering to production capacity and time constraints. The model was implemented in an electronic spreadsheet environment and yielded a savings of 7.1% of the total costs. Given that despite their huge popularity, little has been written on the issues of implementing full-scale optimization models in spreadsheets;thus we also provide the details of the model's implementation in Excel. An optimization model for the real-time truck dispatching problem in open-pit mining operations

This work is concerned with the real-time truck dispatching problem in open-pit mining operations. The proposed methodology is built on a multi-stage dispatching approach to optimize the truck-shovel material handling systems. The procedure consists of two main stages: allocation planning and dynamic allocation. At first, a scenario-based method is presented to estimate the optimal size of trucks in the mining operation. Then, a novel multi-objective mathematical model for solving the problem of dynamically allocating trucks is presented, aiming at minimizing fleet waiting times and deviations from the path production requirements established by the allocation planning. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, three different heuristic methods, including criteria of minimizing shovel idle time, minimizing ratio variance, and minimizing the deviation from the allocation planning, are developed. Afterward, the dispatching methods are tested by building a discrete-event simulation of a copper ore mine case study to compare the results. The findings suggest that the multi-objective model developed in this paper has a great potential to meet the production requirements of the operation compared to the heuristic algorithms.

When addressing a decision making problem with incomplete preference relations, missing information could be estimated by proposing an optimization model. The previous studies always focus on a unique solution to optimization models through a software program. But theoretical and simulation investigations of multiple solutions are seldom considered. This paper investigates the existence of multiple solutions to an optimization model and proposes a simulation procedure. First, an optimization model is recalled for completing incomplete fuzzy preference relations. It is the first time to theoretically prove the existence of multiple solutions to the optimization model under various incomplete entries. The obtained results reveal that the optimal solution to an optimization model may be an interval value, which is dependent on the number and position of missing entries in an incomplete fuzzy preference relation. The idea of multiple solutions is further extended to the situation where an intransitive fuzzy preference relation should be adjusted to a weakly transitive matrix. Second, multiple solutions to the optimization model are simulated using the quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm. It is found that multiple solutions do appear under some conditions by only running the algorithm for multiple times. Finally, the impact of multiple solutions on the optimal alternative(s) of a decision making problem is analyzed by comparing with the existing studies. The result shows that the existence of multiple solutions reflects the uncertainty of optimization models, which is of concerns to propose an effective decision-making model.

Improved coal combustion optimization model based on load balance and coal qualities

Combustion optimization by fine tuning combustion parameters of boilers can cut down NOx emissions effectively with little cost. Coal qualities, which change from time to time, have great influences on NOx emissions. However, the current NOx reduction optimization model cannot handle with this problem well. What is more, the output load would deviate from the demand load as the boiler efficiency is also affected by the optimized manipulated variables (MVs). In this paper, an on-line method to calculate coal qualities based on reverse balance thermal efficiency model was integrated into the optimization model. Furthermore, a new constraint was added to the optimization model to meet the demand load. NOx emission characteristics of some 600 MW capacity utility boiler were investigated. Fine selected MVs were taken as the inputs of support vector machines (SVM) and NOx emission was taken as the output, respectively. Parameters of SVM were fine tuned by particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). Combustion optimization for the studied boiler was undertaken based on the proposed optimization model. Results showed that the new model can provide lower NOx emissions and meet demand loads at the same time. (c) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the electrochemical properties of electrode material on activated carbon double layer capacitors. It also tries to develop a prediction model to evaluate pore size value. Design/methodology/approach Back-propagation neural network (BPNN) prediction model is used to evaluate pore size value. Also, an improved heuristic approach genetic algorithm (HAGA) is used to search for the optimal relationship between process parameters and electrochemical properties. Findings A three-layer ANN is found to be optimum with the architecture of three and six neurons in the first and second hidden layer and one neuron in output layer. The simulation results show that the optimized design model based on HAGA can get the suitable process parameters. Originality/value HAGA BPNN is proved to be a practical and efficient way for acquiring information and providing optimal parameters about the activated carbon double layer capacitor electrode material.

Component based software development (CBSD) is well acknowledged as a methodology which establishes reusability of software and reduce development cost effectively. While developing enterprise application using component based software engineering (CBSE) methods, software component selection plays a very important role in the process of component retrieval, adaptation and assembly. However, most of current researches focus on technical aspects from domain engineering and application engineering to improve reusability and system efficiency rather than application of optimization methods in CBSD management, especially application in component selection. Moreover, few existing researches have concerned about the situation where a software developer or enterprise develops multi-applications at the same time. By introducing the concept of reusability and a new formulation of compatibility matrix, an optimization model is proposed to solve component selection problem considering reusability and compatibility simultaneously. The model can be used to assist software developers in selecting software components when multi-applications are undertaken concurrently. A new optimization model for wastewater treatment planning with a temporal component

The management of wastewater systems constitutes a complex problem in the environmental engineering field. The variability and uncertainty of the inflows of wastewater treatment plants involve a real risk of reducing the effectiveness of the treatments and worsen the ecological state of river basins. An adequate reduction of contaminants requires an optimal combination of wastewater contributions that must constitute the treatment inflow. The problem is complex because of different dynamics and casuistics of wastewater generation, especially when the waste is from industrial activities. In addition, a realistic focus requires consideration of the temporal component due to the distances from the treatment. This paper presents a new optimization model for planning the wastewater inflow in a consistent way, with the novelty from the inclusion of this temporal component. Under the assumption of a complete knowledge of the future, the problem can be expressed as a quadratically constrained program (QCP). With growing problem size, solvers such as CONOPT have increasing difficulties to find good solutions to such problems. Therefore, we propose solving this problem as an online optimization problem in which the quadratic terms are eliminated. Our approach was applied to a virtual case study based on a high number (200) of industrial wastewater generators (located in 4 different zones) and a single wastewater treatment plant. The results obtained evidence the applicability of the model to plan favourably the operation of treatments and contribute to sustainability in the context of the internet of things. An optimization model for collection, haul, transfer, treatment and disposal of infectious medical waste: Application to a Greek region

The objective of this work was to develop an optimization model to minimize the cost of a collection, haul, transfer, treatment and disposal system for infectious medical waste (IMW). The model calculates the optimum locations of the treatment facilities and transfer stations, their design capacities (t/d), the number and capacities of all waste collection, transport and transfer vehicles and their optimum transport path and the minimum IMW management system cost. Waste production nodes (hospitals, healthcare centers, peripheral health offices, private clinics and physicians in private practice) and their IMW production rates were specified and used as model inputs. The candidate locations of the treatment facilities, transfer stations and sanitary landfills were designated, using a GIS-based methodology. Specifically, Mapinfo software with exclusion criteria for non-appropriate areas was used for siting candidate locations for the construction of the treatment plant and calculating the distance and travel time of all possible vehicle routes. The objective function was a non-linear equation, which minimized the total collection, transport, treatment and disposal cost. Total cost comprised capital and operation costs for: (1) treatment plant, (2) waste transfer stations, (3) waste transport and transfer vehicles and (4) waste collection bins and hospital boxes. Binary variables were used to decide whether a treatment plant and/or a transfer station should be constructed and whether a collection route between two or more nodes should be followed. Microsoft excel software was used as installation platform of the optimization model: For the execution of the optimization routine, two completely different software were used and the results were compared, thus, resulting in higher reliability and validity of the results. The first software was Evolver, which is based on the use of genetic algorithms. The second one was Crystal Ball, which is based on Monte Carlo simulation
