This work proposes the design of an optimization method for high-power LED luminaires with the introduction of new evaluation metrics. A luminaire geometry computational method is deployed to conduct thermal and optical analysis. This current effort novels by designing a tool that enables the analysis of uniformity for individual luminaire over the target plane in accordance with international regulatory standards. Additionally, adequate thermal management is conducted to guarantee nominal operation standard values determined by LED vendors. The results of this optimization method present luminaire models with different geometries that allow the stabilization of the temperature within the safety and uniform illuminance distribution thresholds. The resulting solution proposes the design of a 2 x 2 HP-LED rectangular luminaire. During simulations, the temperature of the LED reaches a maximum value of 73.9 degrees C in a steady state with a uniform index of 0.228 for its individual luminaire. The overall uniform index identified for two separate and adjacent luminaire points in a pedestrian walk is 0.5413 with a minimal illuminance of 36.95 lx, maximum illuminance of 93.65 lx and average illuminance of 68.27 lx. Overall, we conclude that the currently adopted metric, which takes into consideration only the ratio between the minimum and the average illuminance, is not efficient and it cannot distinguish different luminaire geometry standards according to their uniform illuminance distribution. The metric proposed and designed in this work is capable of evaluating illuminance and thermal threshold criteria, as well as classifying different sorts of luminaries.

Injection moulding process is one of the most important process in manufacturing plastic part. However, during injection process, many parameters are required to set-up at the injection machine monitor. Long time is needed to adjust the parameters in order to get high quality of product. Therefore, simulation software is essential to speed-up the setting process especially for producing new product. The objective of this research is to optimize the injection process parameters of melt temperature, mould temperature, injection time and cooling time. The responses of fill time and time to freeze are set the lowest the better meanwhile total part weight is set the higher the better. Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed to optimize all parameters. The plastic material used in this simulation analysis was polypropylene. The flat plastic part was designed using CATIA software and the design was transferred to the Moldflow simulation software. It found that, the lowest value for fill time and time to freeze is 0.2099 s and 12.21 s respectively. Meanwhile, the highest value of part weight is 4.5565 g. After optimization process, fill time shows no change. However, freeze time decreases for 0.4% to 12.16 s then total part weight increases for 0.12% to 4.620 g. ANOVA result shows that injection time was the most significant parameter for fill time meanwhile melt temperature was the most significant parameter for time to freeze and total part weight. Thus, these optimization parameters result can be used for future experimental work. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Wastewater from olive oil mills (OMW) represents a major environmental problem that requires effective treatment to decrease pollution. In the present work, the treatment of olive oil mill wastewater by coagulation was studied using Moringa Oliefera as a natural coagulant. The processing is optimized using both Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology and a central composite design (CCD) combined with the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimization describes the relationship between 3 responses (turbidity, COD, and polyphenols) and 4 independent variables (Moringa Oliefera concentration, pH, agitation speed, and time). Analysis of variance ANOVA using Fisher's test indicated that the established models were significant. The study showed that the model was characterized by a good fit, justified by the very high adjusted coefficient of determination (R(2)Adj = 86.73%, R(2)Adj = 90.39% and R(2)Adj = 93.33% for the turbidity, COD, and polyphenols, respectively). Furthermore, the optimum conditions for a good purification performance of OMW using Moringa Oliefera are as follows [Mo] = Moringa Oliefera = 65 g/L, pH = 6, Agitation speed (Ss) = 35 rpm and Agitation time (St) = 25 min. Under these conditions, the turbidity, COD and polyphenol removal efficiencies are 96%, 88%, and 86% respectively. Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) poses serious environmental problems due to the presence of high phenolic compounds (PC) content. The search for new strains able to degrade pollutants in OMWW and withstand the toxic effects of the high PC concentrations is of great scientific and industrial interest. In this study, an isolated bacterium identified as Bacillus subtilis was selected based on its ability to grow on minimum synthetic medium based media using PC as sole sources of carbon and energy and to degrade the OMWW. The treatment conditions were optimized and included the following parameters: OMWW dilution with the addition of different nitrogen sources, shaking and incubation temperatures. The maximum abatement rate of PC and chemical oxygen demand was 98% and 97%, respectively. This result was obtained at 25% dilution of OMWW with 1 mL inoculums size in a bioreactor with150 rpm, at 37 degrees C with the addition of the degradation media with 1 g/L yeast extract and 3 g/L urea. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis of extracts from treated OMWW showed the evolution of PC content during the degradation process and indicated the high reduction in phenolic compound concentrations.

A customized genetic algorithm with in-loop robustness analyses to boost the optimization process of analog CMOS ICs

The traditional optimization processes of analog complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits (ICs) are very complex, slow, and based on the designers' experience. To obtain robust potential solutions, it is necessary to perform robustness analyses (RAs) through SPICE simulations. However, this approach represents a huge bottleneck in the optimization processes due to the significant increase of time of the SPICE simulations concerning the RAs. Therefore, this work proposes an innovative customized genetic algorithm (GA) to boost the optimization process of analog CMOS ICs. The main results obtained showed that all designs of analog CMOS ICs reached a yield of 100% and a remarkable reduction of the optimization time (from 23% to 79%) in comparison with the standard optimization process with the GA, without reducing the random samples number considered in the RAs, and consequently preserving their robustness accuracy.

New insight into the effect of fungal mycelia present in the bio-pretreated paddy straw on their enzymatic saccharification and optimization of process parameters

Assessment of Pleurotus florida efficiency on paddy straw pretreatment and optimization of saccharification parameters were studied. P. florida growth was monitored by the estimation of fungal cell wall component (glucosamine). The control bio-pretreatment sample showed high glucosamine content by 397 mg/g in 28 days of incubation. But, the Inhibitor Mediated Biological (IMB) Pretreatment showed 29% lower result due to the inhibition of cellulase enzyme limits mycelial penetration rate inside the paddy straw. Fungal components present inside the pretreated straw renders nonspecific interactions with the hydrolytic enzymes during saccharification process and reducing the hydrolysis efficiency. IMB pretreated paddy straw showed maximum saccharification efficiency up to 75.3% with optimized condition (Biomass loading-10% (w/v), Enzyme loading-20 FPU/g and saccharification time - 72 h) than control pretreatment sample. Thus, the study brings out new insight into the effect of fungal residues inside the bio-pretreated paddy straw during enzymatic saccharification to improve the efficiency.

Ultrasound wave assisted adsorption of congo red using gold-magnetic nanocomposite loaded on activated carbon: optimization of process parameters

In this study, gold-magnetic nanocomposite in the presence of ultrasound wave assisted was synthesized and loaded on activated carbon (Au-Fe3O4-NCs-AC) by simple, fast and low-cost process. This novel material was applied for ultrasound assisted adsorption of congo red (CR) as model of toxic and even carcinogenic substance from aqueous solution. The detail of morphology and identity of Au-Fe3O4-AC was characterized by SEM and TEM techniques and correlation among response to variables such as pH (2-10), adsorbent mass (0.005-0.025 g), initial CR concentration (10-30 mg L-1) and ultrasound time (2-6 min) was investigated by response surface methodology (RSM) under central composite design (CCD). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibit a high R-2 value of 0.999 and confirm suitability of constructed second-order regression model for excellent evaluation and prediction of the experimental data. The interaction and main factor and optimum conditions of the under study process were determined from response surface plots based on desirability function. The maximum CR adsorption were achieved at pH of 4, 15 mg L-1 of CR, 0.017 g of Au-Fe3O4-AC and 5 min sonication which owing to 99.49% removal efficiency is highly recommended for future CR removal from different matrixes. Adsorption kinetic follow second-order rate expression in combination to inter particle diffusion and equilibrium adsorption data best represented by the Langmuir isotherm with maximum mono-layer adsorption capacity of 43.88 mg g(-1).

Within the supply chain for the production of natural gas, the liquefaction process is regarded as having the highest energy consumption and expense. This analysis demonstrates how this procedure may be made substantially more efficient while using less energy overall. The productivity of liquefied natural gas can be increased with the smallest improvement in design optimisation, which increases the process' economic viability. The liquefaction process is further optimised by algorithms that are proved to boost the liquefied natural gas plant's energy efficiency. This overview provides information on the modelling techniques researchers have employed, identifies any knowledge gaps, and offers some crucial suggestions for improving the natural gas liquefaction process when using various simulation tools.

NASA's Advanced Mirror Technology Development (AMTD) program has been developing the means to design and build the future generations of space based telescopes. With the nearing completion of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the astrophysics community is already starting to define the requirements for follow on observatories. The restrictions of available launch vehicles and the possibilities of planned future vehicles have fueled the competition between monolithic primaries (with better optical quality) and segmented primaries (with larger apertures, but with diffraction, costs and figure control issues). Regardless of the current shroud sizes and lift capacities, these competing architectures share the need for rapid design tools. As part of the AMTD program a number of tools have been developed and tested to speed up the design process. Starting with the Arnold Mirror Modeler (which creates Finite Element Models (FEM) for structural analysis) and now also feeds these models into thermal stability analyses. They share common file formats and interchangeable results. During the development of the program, numerous trade studies were created for 4 meter and 8 meter monolithic primaries, complete with support systems. Evaluation of these results has led to a better understanding of how the specification drives the results. This paper will show some of the early trade studies for typical specification requirements such as lowest mirror bending frequency and suspension system lowest frequency. The results use representative allowable stress values for each mirror substrate material and construction method and generic material properties. These studies lead to some interesting relationships between feasible designs and the realities of actually trying to build these mirrors.
