In the present paper, the Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm is used for the identification of optimal routes in the case of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection. The proposed MSW management system is based on a geo-referenced spatial database supported by a geographic information system (GIS). The GIS takes into account all the required parameters for solid waste collection. These parameters include static and dynamic data, such as the positions of waste bins, the road network and the related traffic, as well as the population density in the area under study. In addition, waste collection schedules, truck capacities and their characteristics are also taken into consideration. Spatio-temporal statistical analysis is used to estimate inter-relations between dynamic factors, like network traffic changes in residential and commercial areas. The user, in the proposed system, is able to define or modify all of the required dynamic factors for the creation of alternative initial scenarios. The objective of the system is to identify the most cost-effective scenario for waste collection, to estimate its running cost and to simulate its application. Finally, the results of the ACS algorithm are compared with the empirical method currently used by the Municipality of Athens.

We develop a new method with a global optimization for registering films to calculate doses for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and intensity-modutated radiosurgery (IMRS) quality assurance (QA). Both absolute point dosimetry and two-dimensional (2D) film dosimetry are performed through the IMRT and IMRS using Clinac 21 EX's 120 millenium MLC and BrainLab's micro-MLC, respectively. The measured and calculated dose distributions are superimposed by coincidence of their origins, followed by comparison of the point doses at all matched positions. Then, with the optimization algorithm the setup error of the dosimeter is corrected. An example of IMRT cases shows that the average percentage showing 3% of dose difference for 10 patients has been reduced from 19% to 9%, before and after optimization and weight, respectively. Similar results are obtained for IMRS. This method dramatically reduces the difference between measured and calculated dose distributions in all cases investigated. Motivated by optimization of network communication systems, this paper presents an event-driven semi-Markov switching state-space control process with hierarchical dynamic architectures. First, the semi-Markov kernel of the switching control process is constructed, and the sensitivity formula for performance derivatives under average criterion is derived. Then, an online optimization algorithm that combines policy gradient estimation and stochastic approximation is proposed. This analytic model is with constructional flexibility and scalability, and the proposed optimization algorithm is adaptive and with less computational cost. Finally, as an illustrative example, the load balancing problem in a streaming media server cluster is formulated and addressed.

Improved demand based engineering method for designing radio networks of cellular mobile communications systems arc, presented here. We have used forward engineering method, "The Integrated Approach" to cellular network planning. For traffic distribution, a new discrete population model "The Demand Node Concept" has been used to locate the transmitter as a Maximal Coverage Location Problem (MCLP). Set Cover Model and Maximal Coverage Location Problem are implemented to obtain feasible solution. Both Set covering model and MCLP are based on the greedy heuristic solutions. The purpose of this study is to develop a software for optimized registering of film dosimetry with calculated dose for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) quality assurance. The newly developed software consists of a film device driver and the verification of fluence map. A film device driver follows the TWAIN 32 protocol. This driver enables us to easily calibrate and scan the films in any film scanner. The fluence map verification software is programmed by C++, which is suitable for the extension of future work. Taking advantages of that multi platform Qt (Trolltech, Norway) GUI library, we have made it run on Windows and Linux operating systems even Mac OSX. For drawing and viewing the fluence map in 2 and 3D, OpenGL (SGI Corp., USA) is implemented. Both absolute point dosimetry and 3D film dosimetry were performed throughout the IMRT using Clinac 21EX's millennium MLC. With these custom-written software modules, the measured and calculated dose distributions for axial planes were superimposed by coincidence of their origins, followed by comparison of the point doses at all matched positions. Then, with the optimization algorithm the setup errors were recovered. We have developed customwritten software modules for managing dose-distribution files, optimizing the position, calculating dose differences, and printing out the report. Differences between the calculated and measured doses over the 3% criterion could be reduced by 15% after applying the optimization algorithm. optimization dramatically reduced the difference between measured and calculated dose distributions in all cases investigated.

Recently, we proposed a novel optimization algorithm called constrained line search (CLS) to train Gaussian mean vectors of HMMs in the MMI sense. In this paper, we extend and re-formulate it in a more general framework. The new CLS can optimize any discriminative objective functions including MMI, MCE, MPE/MWE etc. Also, closed-form solutions to update all Gaussian mixture parameters, including means, covariances and mixture weights, are obtained. We investigate the new CLS on several benchmark speech recognition databases, including TIDIGITS, Switchboard mini-train and Switchboard full h5train00 sets. Experimental results show that the new CLS optimization method outperforms the conventional EBW method in both performance and convergence behavior.

An improved image encryption/decryption approach is proposed. In the encryption system, a binary amplitude image is encoded in the Fourier domain. Then, the encoded image is scrambled with a random binary phase image to produce the encrypted image. Both the encoding and encryption processes are done electronically. The encrypted image is stored in an encrypted phase mask of which the transmittance is proportional to the phase components of that image. In the decryption process, the encrypted phase mask is optically descrambled with another phase mask which has the transmittance identical to phase components of the random image used in the encryption process. The descrambled field is inversely Fourier transformed by a Fourier lens in order to reproduce the original image. The simplicity and the misalignment free characteristics are the most significant advantages of our method. The Fourier encoding process using an optimization algorithm with iteration technique is discussed in detail. The effect of noise on the quality of the decrypted image is investigated. The innovation of the system is demonstrated through simulations. The most critical issue of our technique is that the encryption process requires an optimization search which consumes some computation time so that the system is expected to be applied for unreal-time applications.

We propose a feature enhanced image reconstruction method for spotlight mode synthetic aperture radar. Based on the image processing of Computerized tomography model, this method has increased resolution, reduced side lobes and reduced speckle by incorporating prior information regarding the features of interested scattering fields.
