In a hard real-time embedded system based on a fixed priority pre-emptive Networks-On-Chip (NoC), the provision of guaranteed services may require pre-emption of some tasks and messages based on their priorities. In a worst case scenario, the interference imposed to low priority tasks can cause substantial computation and communication delays that can exceed their deadlines, leading to an unschedulable system. In a task mapping optimisation process, changing task mappings does not always produce a schedulable task mapping. In this paper, we propose an approach that simultaneously optimises task mapping and priority assignment, aiming to find a configuration that can completely satisfy the timing constraints of the system. Differing to the state-of-the-art, our approach takes into account the overall schedulability of the system by considering the worst-case end-to-end response time of all mapped tasks. As a result, we are able to increase the quality of task mappings at the same time improving the convergence of the optimisation algorithm, better than the previous approaches that solely focus on the task mapping optimisation to make the system schedulable.

This research presents the architecture of a technology platform capable of integrating different types of data from building sensors and providing an interface to manage and operate facility devices, which is supported by advanced optimization algorithms. This interface is potentiated by a BIM-based interface presenting real-time data of the building. The solution, called 3i buildings - Intelligent, Interactive, and Immersive Buildings, is a tool to monitor and manage smart buildings, as well as optimize users experience, energy consumptions and environment quality. This is achieved by a grid of sensors and devices that continuously gather information (structural conditions of the building, occupancy, comfort of occupants, energy consumptions and CO2, COV's and Humidity levels, etc.), which is processed by predictive models able to learn over time. The 3D representation of the models allows managers to take advantage of the virtual environment, by augmenting the facility model and including information about the facility, making it easier and perceptible to users and owners, helping them to make better decisions. To support our research, the system will be installed in three different environments, Luz's hospital, Lisbon Aquarium and Norte Shopping, to test the solution under different conditions, objectives and users. In the first two cases the objectives are to monitor building air quality, consumptions and occupancy and in the Norte Shopping case the objectives are to monitor people flows, interact with tem and help the response in case of crisis according to the adopted emergency plan. These types of systems might help reducing energy consumptions as well as increasing comfort and satisfaction of occupants, maintaining a constant concentration of CO2 and humidity within the facility. Modern trends in automation require flexible production with an onus on saving energy. Till recently, the focus of production systems has been only saving production costs, but the growing concern over environmental impact of such system has led to a partial change in paradigm. The key for the future generation production system is to successfully integrate the manufacturing environment with energy optimisation. This relies on transparent representation of the building from the point of the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) that is not feasible using conventional centralized approaches to building thermal modeling and optimization. This work focuses on distributing the building automation system in a set of generic cells that encapsulate thermal energy models and optimization algorithms to minimize computational resources required for the system implementation on embedded devices. Combined with a notion of the global overview of the energy optimization with functional aggregation and dynamic clustering concepts, the proposed architecture provides a flexible energy saving solution that can be easily integrated in majority of conventional manufacturing systems as well as related factory buildings without compromising production operations.

In this paper a method is presented to address the automatic testing of analog ICs. Based on Design-for-Testability building blocks offering extra controllability and extra observability, a test infrastructure is generated for a targeted circuit. The selection of the extra blocks and their insertion into the circuit is done automaticaly by a proposed optimization algorithm. Adopting a defect-oriented methodology, this algorithm maximizes the fault coverage and minimizes the silicon area overhead. The proposed method is applied to an industrial circuit to generate an optimal test infrastructure combining controllability and observability. The case study shows that, with a silicon area overhead of less than 10%, a fault coverage of 91% can be reached.

We present a novel numerical approach to decrease the limits of the minimum paint thickness measurements of individual layers in multilayered structures using terahertz pulsed technique in reflection geometry. This method combines the benefits of model-based material parameters extraction, a generalized transfer matrix method, and an evolutionary optimization algorithm. The proposed approach has been successfully applied to resolve individual layer thicknesses down to 5 mu m in multilayered automotive paint samples.

Nature has various biological activities which has simulated the development of many elegant algorithms for problem-solving since it exhibits extremely heterogeneous and captivating phenomenon. The bio-inspired tactics have several mesmeric features and choices compared to conventional optimization solvers. Genetic Algorithm (GA) are adaptive heuristic search algorithm based on the evolutionary ideas of natural selection and has significant benefits over more typical search of optimization techniques. Self-organization technique automates the selection of appropriate parameter values of GA during execution without the user's intervention. GA explores the multi-parameter space of solution and in each iterative step;chromosomes are altered. To blend self-organization and GA, it is essential to understand its various aspects clearly. In GA, the selection of appropriate parameters is difficult, reducing run time and avoiding premature convergence is difficult. In this paper, a new Bio-inspired optimization algorithm has been proposed based on the foraging behaviour of the Bottlenose dolphin. Oneof the famous combinatorial hard problems of Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is being chosen as thetest bed.

Comparative Study of optimization Techniques in Sizing Mesostructures for Use in NonPneumatic Tires

This paper presents a comparative study on the size optimization of four mesostructures to meet the design requirements for a nonpneumatic tire's (NPT) shear beam with 10% shear flexure (SF) at 10 MPa effective shear modulus. The need for such comparison is motivated from the previous research wherein a systematic design method is proposed to design a mesostructure with high SF by studying the strain energy distribution pattern in honeycomb, auxetic, and sinusoidal auxetic mesostructure. Based upon the distribution pattern, a new type of mesostructure termed S-type is invented. Although it exhibited higher SF than the other mesostructures for a comparable set of geometry, it is not possible to validate the design method without exploring the complete design space of both existing and newly invented mesostructures. In order to address this limitation, these four mesostructures are optimized using the following optimization algorithms: (i) particle swarm;(ii) genetic algorithm (GA);and (iii) FAST-SIMPLEX (using response surface method). The results show the S-type mesostructure can be configured to meet the design requirements, thereby validating the design method presented in previous research. Additionally, it is also observed that auxetic mesostructure is only 5% less than the required design target, which presents an opportunity in future, to develop an alternate design method to maximize SF other than the one that is being validated in this paper.

In recent years the development of photovoltaic cells has increased due to the high demand for clean and green energy. Used around the world for energy production, the power production of these cells must be maximized in all weather conditions, therefor systems for tracking the Maximum Power Point became necessary, the most widely used being Perturb & Observe. Fuzzy Logic (Type 1 & 2) was introduced due to inconveniences in the use of the P&O method. FL furthers development and allows the system to better handle uncertainty. This method proves to be both efficient and robust, and is combined with an evolutionary algorithm to further enhance it. This work focuses on the tracking of MPP using IT2FL in combination with genetic algorithms and Particle Swarm optimization algorithms.

Forming and exploring complex objects is at the heart of a variety of emerging web applications. Historically, existing work on complex objects has been developed in two separate areas: composite item retrieval and team formation. At the same time, emerging applications that harness the wisdom of crowd workers, such as, document editing by workers, sentence translation by fans (or fan subbing), innovative design, citizen science or journalism, represent complex crowdsourcing, in which an object may represent a complex task formed by a set of sub-tasks or a team of workers who work together to solve the task. The goal of this tutorial is to bridge the gap between composite item retrieval and team formation and define new research directions for complex crowdsourcing applications.

Currently, traverse/mission planning for deployed rovers (e.g., on Mars) requires planetary scientists to spend many hours in laborious surface terrain analysis, with the goal of minimizing some traverse aspects (e.g., distance) and maximizing others (e.g., smoothness). This is a largely manual process, and the results are at best functional compromises balancing the various potentially mutually exclusive optimization goals. The Rover Traverse Optimizing Planner (RTOP) introduced here is an automated system which generates optimized traverses using a multivariate stochastic optimization algorithm based on terrain data. RTOP makes it possible to quickly and accurately generate traverses optimized in numerous simultaneous constraints, such as: lowest number of deployment segments, shortest traverse based on 3D Euclidian distance measure, smoothest traverse with respect to terrain roughness, least altitude change, or any combination of these. Additional constraints which are supported by the terrain data can be added directly to the system. Waypoints (as well as avoidance points) can be assigned to each traverse, and numerous alternate (Pareto-optimal) traverses can be generated for each deployment scenario. Depending on ground-truth in-situ assessment of terrain data traversability by a deployed rover (e.g., Curiosity), RTOP allows for frequent replanning of traverses/missions.
