As the refrigeration technology consumes more than 15% of worldwide consumption of electricity, the development of technologies with improved efficiency remains an important challenge. In this context, magnetic refrigeration is an interesting solution and this paper proposes an original magnetic refrigerator. The aim - and also the originality - of this new device is to integrate the magnetocaloric regenerator in the air gap of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM). The conventional design of PMSM stator and rotor is presented and the results lead to the construction of a prototype that enables the validation of the proposed concept. Finally, thanks to the coupling of an optimization algorithm and a 2D FEM simulation, the rotor is optimized and the air-gap flux density is greatly improved (from 0.9 T to 1.35 T).

As a result of the uncertainties and significant fluctuations of both power generation and consumption in a microgrid, the battery energy storage system (BESS) endures large oscillations in absorbing and releasing active power. This paper proposes a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) composed of supercapacitors and batteries. An optimal design method of HESS capacity is introduced so that HESS can meet the technical requirements, such as smoothing out the wind power fluctuations and the economic requirement in a microgrid. Based on the level of smoothing (LOS) of power curves, a neural network model was established to reflect the interrelationship between characteristic parameters of HESS and LOS of output power transmitted to the independent microgrid. Besides, taking the economic demand into consideration, a long-term mathematical model was built. Optimal algorithm was used to determine optimal size of HESS by optimizing the objective function, which was derived from the built model. Finally, an example indicates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper addresses the problem of automated prosthesis modelling and manufacturing, whose machining parameters are based on images extracted from different medical databases. The specific case of 3D surface restoration of a defective skull was used as study case. A method based on adjusted ellipses on skull bone curvature performs the symbolic representation of searching parameters. The superellipse concept permits to define geometric parameters to fit an ellipse on each Computed Tomography slice. Those ellipse descriptors can be used as a template for the retrieval of similar images from databases whose parameters match the sampled image. The similarity is measured according to the best fitness values through an optimization algorithm. The slices found by similarity are retrieved from all databases in order to build the 3D model. Experiments show that the proposed method is a promising technique for content based image retrieval.

In this paper, new planar spiral antennas for passive RFID tag application at UHF band are designed and optimized using the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm. The optimization goals are antenna size minimization, gain maximization and conjugate matching. The antenna dimensions were optimized and evaluated using ABC in conjunction with commercial EM software. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis of the spiral antennas was performed. The input impedance of the printed spiral, was calculated approximately via the Transmission Line Model and the electromotive force induced along the spirals. The theoretical results seem to be in good agreement with the EM solver results. The optimization results produced show that ABC is a powerful optimization algorithm that can be efficiently applied to tag antenna design problems. RFID tags with dimensions less than 4cm, gain that reaches the value of 2 dBi and read distance about 11.7m were among those obtained by the algorithm.

This paper proposes a dictionary learning framework that combines the proposed block/group (BGSC) or reconstructed block/group (R-BGSC) sparse coding schemes with the novel Intra-block Coherence Suppression Dictionary Learning (ICS-DL) algorithm. An important and distinguishing feature of the proposed framework is that all dictionary blocks are trained simultaneously with respect to each data group while the intra-block coherence being explicitly minimized as an important objective. We provide both empirical evidence and heuristic support for this feature that can be considered as a direct consequence of incorporating both the group structure for the input data and the block structure for the dictionary in the learning process. The optimization problems for both the dictionary learning and sparse coding can be solved efficiently using block-gradient descent, and the details of the optimization algorithms are presented. We evaluate the proposed methods using well-known datasets, and favorable comparisons with state-of-the-art dictionary learning methods demonstrate the viability and validity of the proposed framework.

An overview of different versions of the Eleven feed and recent development is presented in the paper. Eleven feeds have a nearly constant beamwidth and a fix phase center, with a performance of an aperture efficiency higher than 60%, -10 dB reflection coefficient, -0.2dB radiation efficiency, and -15dB cross-polar level, over a decade bandwidth. The Eleven feed can be very compact after applying newly developed optimization algorithms, and some new results of the feed in dual-reflector antennas are reported here.

We consider the problem of multidimensional seismic data signal recovery and noise attenuation. These data are multidimensional signals that can be described via a low-rank fourth-order tensor in the frequency - space domain. Tensor completion strategies can be used to recover unrecorded observations and to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic data volumes. Tensor completion is posed as an inverse problem and solved via a convex optimization algorithm where a misfit function is minimized in conjunction with the nuclear norm of the tensor. This formulation offers automatic rank determination. We illustrate the performance of the algorithm with a synthetic example and with a real data set obtained by an onshore seismic survey.

This paper is concerned with the inference of marginal densities based on MRF models. The optimization algorithms for continuous variables are only applicable to a limited number of problems, whereas those for discrete variables are versatile. Thus, it is quite common to convert the continuous variables into discrete ones for the problems that ideally should be solved in the continuous domain, such as stereo matching and optical flow estimation. In this paper, we show a novel formulation for this continuous-discrete conversion. The key idea is to estimate the marginal densities in the continuous domain by approximating them with mixtures of rectangular densities. Based on this formulation, we derive a mean field (MF) algorithm and a belief propagation (BP) algorithm. These algorithms can correctly handle the case where the variable space is discretized in a non-uniform manner. By intentionally using such a non-uniform discretization, a higher balance between computational efficiency and accuracy of marginal density estimates could be achieved. We present a method for actually doing this, which dynamically discretizes the variable space in a coarse-to-fine manner in the course of the computation. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach.

In this paper, we consider the performance of distributed control algorithms for networked robotic systems when one or more robots fail to execute the optimal policy. In particular, we investigate the performance of the circumcenter algorithm with connectivity maintenance [1]-[3] when one or more adversarial agents act maliciously to maximally disrupt convergence of the remaining, cooperative agents. To this end, we formulate a performance objective for each adversary node in terms of the circumradii of its cooperative neighbors in a communication graph which does not require omniscience of adversaries as is often assumed in the literature (e.g., [4], [5]). We provide an optimization algorithm based on finite-horizon dynamic programming, and obtain solutions through numerical simulation. Our results show that in general adversarial nodes are able not only to impede convergence toward consensus, but can also affect global changes in the topology of the communication graph for the cooperative agents.

The branch current state estimators available in the existing literature consider the distribution networks as composed of lines and cables. In this paper, a general technique is demonstrated in order to handle other key distribution network components such as transformers and voltage regulators. It is also demonstrated how to consider the tap positions of transformers and regulators as state variables in the estimation process given that they are rarely telemetered. The performance of iterative optimization algorithms depends strongly on the initial solution. In this paper, the load allocation algorithm is used in order to obtain an initial solution and associate loads with pseudo-measurements. The latter step is necessary in order to assure observability of the network. The load allocation algorithm used in this study is a straightforward tool based on ladder iterative algorithm.
