The paper presents new concepts and approaches to achieving intelligent control interfaces for solving contradictory problems using Extenics multidimensional theory applied on VIPRO Versatile Intelligent Portable Platforms. VIPRO platform enables developing the IT Industry 4.0 concept through the design, testing and experimentation of new intelligent control interfaces on a classical mechatronic control system without the need to modify its hardware structure, and, from optimal decisions and information fusion between the intelligent control interfaces, resulting in a high degree of versatility and portability to a global communications network. The Cyber-Physical Systems as like a VIPRO Platform's component, developed through advanced intelligent control interfaces integrate the dynamics of the physical processes with those of the software and networking, providing a powerful environment for modeling, design, and analysis techniques for an integrated whole IT Industry. The portability characteristics results allow test and improve the motion performance of the mechatronic system, and furthermore implement the intelligent control and decision interfaces on their own control system, applying Industry 4.0 components: cognitive computing including intelligence and signal processing, cyber-physical systems, internet of things and cloud computing, exemplified on an Extenics multidimensional control intelligent interfaces. Following the massive interests in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), various optimization algorithms have been proposed for a path planning problem that allow the units to navigate in a region filled with threats such as a radar detection in air defence systems. Among the algorithms, we address Dijkstra's algorithm and a heuristic algorithm for the path planning of a UAV. The algorithms are compared under various configurations of a region to navigate with respect to the optimality and the computational complexity of the algorithms. Mastering the bioprocesses has an important impact on the industrial scale and leads to immediate social benefits on a local economy scale as well as stability on the global economy scale by the implicit answer it provides to the basic needs. The control engineering community can contribute to advance the technology in the related fields by means of a systematic model-based design. The foundation of such an approach is the modelling of the dynamical behaviour of biological processes and the competitiveness between species seen as dynamical behaviours. The present paper aims to recall a series of classifications and basic notions on these topics, the ultimate goal being twofold. On one side, it will be show that the control community is ready to step into the scene given the maturity of the existing models. On the other side, the optimization and control design have to deal with uncovered qualitative notions as the extinguish phenomena, scaling (extrapolation) of bioprocess operating regimes but also with the implementation challenges coming from the discretization issues, the asynchronous or event triggered functioning and the distributed control configurations. © 2016

Energy optimization of mineral processing operations through optimal energy and inventory management

Mineral processing plants are facing scenarios of increasing energy demand in Chile. Since many mineral processing plants are located in desert regions with high solar radiation levels, companies are looking at solar energy, as a renewable energy source, to supply their energy needs. This work describes two examples of Solar Energy Systems (SES) integration into mineral processing plants. They provide an overview of the current challenges and deliver some lights about opportunities for further developments. The first example describes a hybridization strategy; i.e. a combination of different energy resources, to meet the energy demand of a large water pumping station. The second example illustrates an application where a load shifting strategies is designed to match the cyclic behavior of the energy sources. The main conclusion of this work, is that given the characteristics of solar energy systems and the operation of current mineral processing plants, optimization and control are key enabling techniques to make an efficient use of this renewable energy source. Further work is underway to look at the development of case study for a Chilean mineral processing plants. The application of this approach to other areas such as comminution circuits will be also explored. © 2018

The generalized least absolute deviation method is an alternative to the least squares method. Together with an appropriate choice of the loss function, it ensures the stability and efficiency of estimating the coefficients of autoregressive models. This paper is devoted to the previously considered methods for finding the parameters of linear regression and autoregressive models without exogenous variables extend to the problem of estimating the parameters of autoregressive models with exogenous variables. A non-iterative method for identifying multiple unknown time-dependent sources compactly supported occurring in a 2D parabolic equation

We address the non-linear inverse source problem of identifying multiple unknown time-dependent sources spatially supported in some subdomains of a two-dimensional bounded domain subject to an evolution advection-dispersion-reaction equation. Provided to be available within the monitored domain interfaces for recording the state and its flux crossing each suspected zone where a source could occur, we establish an identifiability theorem that yields uniqueness of the unknown elements defining all occurring sources. We develop a non-iterative detection-identification method that goes throughout the monitored domain to detect in each suspected zone whether there exists or not an occurring source. Once a source is detected, the developed method determines lower and upper bounds of the total amount discharged by the occurring source and localizes the geometric centre of its unknown spatial support. Then, given two desired reference geometries for example, squares/discs centred at the already localized geometric centre, the method determines the biggest domain defined by a first reference geometry included in the sought source spatial support as well as the smallest domain defined by a second reference geometry containing this unknown support. In addition, the developed method gives an approximation of the surface area of this latest and identifies its time-dependent intensity function. Some numerical experiments on a variant of the surface water Biological Oxygen Demand pollution model are presented.

Fast and robust kernel generators for star trackers

Star Identification (Star-ID) is a complex problem, mainly because some of the observations are not generated by actual stars, but by reflecting debris, other satellites, visible planets, or by electronic noise. For this reason, the capability to discriminate stars from non-stars is an important aspect of Star-ID robustness. Usually, the Star-ID task is performed by first attempting identification on a small group of observed stars (a kernel) and, in case of failure, replacing that kernel with another, until a kernel made only of actual stars is found. This work performs a detailed analysis of kernel generator algorithms, suitable for on-board implementation in terms of speed and robustness, for kernels of three (triad) and four (quad) stars. Three new kernel generator algorithms and, in addition to the existing expected time to discovery, three new metrics for robustness evaluation are proposed. The proposed algorithms are fast, robust to find good kernels, and do not require pre-stored data.

In food market, modeling the dynamics of Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU) requests is of fundamental importance, not only to understand the market but also for optimization and control purposes. In fact, standing on model-based predictions of future demand, an efficient planning of the promotional calendar can be devised. Moreover, better inventory management can be achieved, by reducing losses due to expired aliments remained unsold and improving distribution operations. In this work, data-driven control-oriented modeling of such a demand is discussed and a novel switching dynamical strategy is proposed. When applied to experimental data from a real food company, the above strategy is shown to accurately predict future sales under fixed promotion events and outperform the state-of-the-art modeling methods. © 2017

The proper efficiency of the tablet-coating process often results in a coating within adequate quality, which might avoid the rejection of the film-coated tablets, minimize the operating expenses and production time. In general, the optimum coating system performance and coating conditions are important for achieving the desirable tablet-coating uniformity and manufacturing reproducibility. In this study, HPMC-aqueous-based tablet film coating successfully conducted in a perforated pan coater for process scale-up using the spray-coating technique. Certain process parameters such as spray rate, inlet air temperature, pan temperature, atomizing pressure as well as pan speed were maintained carefully and the optimum coating quality was achieved with acceptable film performance. At lower initial pan speed, the strength of the coated tablets was remarkably improved and the highest weight gain obtained. The smoothest and uniform film obtained at high spray rate, high pan speed, and low atomizing pressure. The results revealed that the optimum film-coating quality and uniformity achieved at a spray rate of 480 ml/min, atomizing pressure at 5 bar, inlet temperature at 85 to 90 degrees C, pan temperature at 58 degrees C, initial pan speed at 1.5 rpm and final pan speed at 4.0 rpm using side-vented pan coater. At initial pan speed of 1.5 rpm, the strength of the coated tablets remarkably improved with minimum edges erosion, which increases the weight gain up to 3.3% w/w.
