NARX Neural Network Modelling of Mushroom Dynamic Vapour Sorption Kinetics

This paper is concerned with the study, optimization and control of the moisture sorption kinetics of agricultural products at temperatures typically found in processing and storage. A nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) neural network was developed to predict moisture sorption kinetics and consequently equilibrium moisture contents of shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler) over a wide range of relative humidity and different temperatures. Sorption kinetic data of mushroom caps was separately generated using a continuous, gravimetric dynamic vapour sorption analyser at temperatures of 25-40 °C over a stepwise variation of relative humidity ranging from 0 to 85%. The predictive power of the neural network was based on physical data, namely relative humidity and temperature. The model was fed with a total of 4500 data points by dividing them into three subsets, namely, 70% of the data was used for training, 15% of the data for testing and 15% of the data for validation, randomly selected from the whole dataset. The NARX neural network was capable of precisely simulating equilibrium moisture contents of mushrooms derived from the dynamic vapour sorption kinetic data throughout the entire range of relative humidity. © 2016

In this paper we present a controller design for a linearized model of a fuel cell hydrogen gas reformer, which produces hydrogen from natural gas. We design two feedback control loops, one of them with an integrator and another one with proportional state feedback. In the third step, a feed-forward controller is designed whose role is to off-set for the impact of the disturbance represented by the fuel cell current. Both the feedback controller and the feed forward controller are obtained through a rigorous dynamic optimization process of a quadratic performance criterion along trajectories of a linear dynamic system. According to the presented simulation results, the proposed controller copes well with the disturbance and reduces its impact within a few seconds from the time when the disturbance occurs, despite large jumps in the fuel cell current (disturbance).

In this paper we present a framework to analyze the asymptotic behavior of two timescale stochastic approximation algorithms including those with set-valued mean fields. This paper builds on the works of Borkar and Perkins & Leslie. The framework presented herein is more general as compared to the synchronous two timescale framework of Perkins & Leslie, however the assumptions involved are easily verifiable. As an application, we use this framework to analyze the two timescale stochastic approximation algorithm corresponding to the Lagrangian dual problem in optimization theory.

This article deals with a job scheduling on two cranes subject to non-interference constraints. It is based on a real case at a distribution center of steel coils, where two cranes sharing the same rail must load a sequence of trucks, which has a defined demand of coils. The problem is mathematically modeled as a parallel machines with ordering variables and with time index variables. The proposed formulations are computationally tested among different instances. The container loading problem has been widely studied recently, in order to reduce logistical costs. The container's applicability is based on the reduction on losses, theft, damaging of goods and general costs, that such device provides. On the other hand, automated planning research, intends to assist the industrial processes for systematically specifying a set of actions that allows achieving a predefined goal. It is noteworthy that in the actions, specifying process a metric can be added for minimizing purposes, but according to each automated planners characteristics, the insertion of such metrics is relatively bounded. The main proposal of this work is to create a fully automated system, capable of carrying out the entire loading process through the information referred to the products, to the container and the transporting devices.

In the Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices embedded on a myriad of different objects will enable monitoring, control, and optimization with potentially transformative impact to the society. Evidently, operational efficiency has become an essential factor in the proliferation of these devices since higher efficiency will prolong device lifetime and achieve greater autonomy. In this work, the operational efficiency challenge is being looked at from the device point of view as well as from the networking side of things in which local and remote hosts need to exchange information for monitoring, control, and optimization functionalities. In the former case, a data-driven event triggering technique is developed to minimize the interaction between devices, while in the latter case an event-based communication strategy is investigated to minimize the overall energy consumption of the network. Both experimental results and results for a real-world application are presented to demonstrate the many-fold operational efficiency gains that can be realized using the proposed solution.

Recent advances in simulation, optimization, structural health monitoring, and high-performance computing create a unique opportunity to combine the developments in these fields to formulate a Dynamics Data Driven Application System (DDDAS) framework. In this paper we propose such a framework, which consists of the following items and features: a structural health monitoring (SHM) system, an advanced fluid—structure interaction (FSI) simulation module, and a sensitivity analysis, optimization and control software module. High-performance computing (HPC) is employed for the various parts of the framework and is viewed as its essential element. The intended application of the developed framework is the analysis of medium-to-large-scale composite structures. These include aerospace structures, such as military aircraft fuselage and wings, helicopter blades, and unmanned aerial vehicles, and civil structures, such as wind turbine blades and towers. The proposed framework will continuously and dynamically integrate the SHM data into the FSI analysis of these structures. This capability allows one to: 1. Shelter the structures from excessive stress levels during operation; 2. Make informed decisions to perform structural maintenance and repair; and 3. Predict the remaining fatigue life of the structure.

Buildings nowadays are increasingly expected to meet higher and more complex performance requirements: they should be sustainable;use zero-net energy;foster a healthy and comfortable environment for the occupants;be grid-friendly, yet economical to build and maintain. The essential ingredients for the successful development and operation of net zero- and positive-energy buildings (NZEB/PEB) are: thermal simulation models, that are accurate representations of the building and its subsystems;sensors, actuators, and user interfaces to facilitate communication between the physical and simulation layers;and finally, integrated control and optimization tools of sufficient generality that using the sensor inputs and the thermal models can take intelligent decisions, in almost real-time, regarding the operation of the building and its subsystems. To this end the aim of the present paper is to present a review on the technological developments in each of the essential ingredients that may support the future integration of successful NZEB/PEB, i.e. accurate simulation models, sensors and actuators and last but not least the building optimization and control. The integration of the user is an integral part in the dynamic behavior of the system, and this role has to be taken into account. Future prospects and research trends are discussed. In this paper, an expanded Elman network is applied to forecast the vehicle dynamic characteristic and a one step predictive control is also put into use to reinforce its handling stability. The combined control strategy is established based on the conception of the distribution of the driving force between the front and rear driving axles that can be easily achieved in an EV. Moreover, in this research, the distribution proportion of longitudinal driving force defining as a parameter is introduced and the control method of vehicle stability with the aid of the distribution proportion between axles is investigated. Simulations have been carried out and the results indicate that the proposed control strategies achieve smooth control effects and rapid target tracking response. This method can be easily applied to the vehicles that are driven by motors, and is capable of improving the lateral dynamic stability of vehicles in most conditions.
