Review on optimization methodologies in transmission network reconfiguration of power systems for grid resilience

Background When a power system blackout occurs, it affects the economy of the country and every aspect of human life. Cascading failures can easily occur and cause a major blackout in the power grid due to the breakdown or failure of important nodes or links. Recently, transmission network reconfiguration (TNR) becomes a hot topic and has made many concerns after major blackouts of power systems. Aims TNR is the second-stage action plan to restore power systems and plays a major role in the process of power system restoration. On the other hand, grid resilience involves a quick dynamic reconfiguration of power systems to minimize the propagation of attack influences on the grid. The motivations to include the works in this survey are based on the quality of the research performed in the transmission network reconfiguration problem for grid resilience. In this article, the state-of-the-art review of recent progress in the network reconfiguration problem of the transmission system for grid resilience is discussed with practical challenges, technical issues, and power industry practices. Materials & Methods In this paper, complex network theory-based indices with advantages, disadvantages, and their applications have been discussed to assess the important nodes and lines for network reconfiguration problem during sudden disturbances in power systems. Furthermore, optimization models have been presented with objective functions as well as their constraints. Taken together, optimization methodologies have been discussed to solve network reconfiguration problem with merits and demerits. Results This survey paper presents current trends in research and future research directions concerning transmission network reconfiguration for academic researchers and practicing engineers. Furthermore, the most current studies in improving transmission network reconfiguration problem are reviewed by highlighting their advantages and limitations. Exponentially rising hydrocarbon fuel consumption creates several environmental issues that have necessitated the integration of renewable energy systems (RES) into the grid. Solar photovoltaic and wind energy constitutes the most matured hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) alternative technology against conventional fossil fuels as it is pollution-free, easily available, low-price, and available in abundance. The intermittent nature of solar irradiation and fluctuation in wind speed makes the system design inappropriate, making it either oversized or undersized. Due to this, deploying solar PV-Wind-based HRES is becoming either expensive or inefficient. Thus, there is an immediate requirement for optimization problem-solving methodologies to minimize the HRES *** paper mainly focuses on a critical comparative analysis of the many applied and promising optimization methodologies. The methodologies used to design the optimal capacity of HRES, are categorized as traditional, modern, and hybrid on the basis of identified objective functions, decision variables, and evaluation indicators. While most of the present studies have been based on the technical reliability and economical perspective of HRES, in this paper the environmental indicators have got major emphasis. The facts emerging out of the study indicate that application of hybrid meta-heuristic optimization techniques for engineering applications is growing significantly due to their flexibility and efficiency. The application of economical indicators was observed to be more prevalent compared to other reliability and environmental indicators. However, the percentage of multiobjective functions of economical and reliability is a growing trend for the optimal design process of HRES.

Global and China trajectory optimization competitions have recently been receiving increasing attention from international astrodynamics community and reputable space agencies such as ESA and NASA. This paper reviews the topics and solution methods of previous competitions. The origin and characteristic of both competitions are firstly summarized. Then, the various optimization methodologies and techniques adopted in the competitions are systematically summarized and reviewed. Finally, combined with the previous summary and analysis, the prospects of the development trend of the topics and the promising solution methods are given.

One of the most significant ways to improve energy reliability and lessen reliance on fossil fuels is to combine renewable energy sources with energy storage systems. Using wind, solar, and battery storage as case studies, the article examines hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) size, optimization, techno-economic potential, and reliability in extensive detail. In order to minimize expenses and emissions while satisfying energy demands, the sizing process consists of evaluating the appropriate capacity of each component. In order to tackle the growing demand with a low carbon footprint, this study investigates the prospect of leveraging hybrid renewable energy (HRE) storage. System demands, budget, and performance indicators are some of the most critical considerations when selecting an energy storage system (ESS) for a renewable energy system. Whether or not the storage option is appropriate for HRE systems depends on the setup requirements. The selection of an ESS technology necessitates taking into account aspects like energy and power requirements, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, versatility, and reliability. The investigation also considers factors such as electricity long-term viability, dependability, technical and financial feasibility, and ecological sustainability when evaluating hybrid renewable energy power-producing technologies. Improving dependability and smoothing down power output are two major benefits of ESS integration. The findings show that integrating HRES with ESS can lead to more sustainable energy systems, providing a long-term, reliable, and cost-effective solution. Findings emphasize the need for further study of optimization methods, meta-heuristic algorithm strategies, system components, design constraints, and desired techniques.

Enhancement of a Hybrid Electric Shipboard Microgrid’s Frequency Stability With Triangulation Topology Aggregation Optimizer-Based 3DOF-PID-TI Controller

This work addresses the important issue of frequency stability in shipboard microgrids (SMGs), which are confronted with difficulties because of the alternating power insertion from green sources and low system inertia. In order to sustain a consistent frequency (despite system uncertainties), a study and precisely calibrated regulator is necessary. Therefore, this article proposed a new combined three degree of freedom proportional integral derivative (3DOF-PID) and tilted-integral (TI) regulators for achieving enhanced system performance, robustness, and enhance the frequency performance of a power grid. The superior performance of the suggested 3DOF-PID-TI has been assured by comparing it with three distinct controller architectures (FOPID, PDPID2 and 2DOF-PID) for the multi-energy SMG system. The investigation also took into account the temporal delays brought on by the communication links between the sensor and the regulator. The triangulation topology aggregation optimizer (TTAO), a relatively new meta-heuristic technique that hasn't been employed to load frequency control (LFC) issues until recently, was employed to adjust the controllers' parameters. The TTAO's frequency performance outcomes were thoroughly contrasted to those of other optimization algorithms (i.e., Chimp, Whale, and Gradient-Based optimization Algorithms) so as to evaluate the optimization efficacy of the suggested optimizer. The findings showed that the proposed 3DOF-PID-TI controller, whose parameters has been tuned by TTAO, outperformed its competitors in terms of overshoot (15.87mHz), undershoot (-29.04mHz), settling time (2.49sec) and performance index (i.e., ITAE(0.0171)). Additionally, the suggested controller's robustness was assessed in a range of SMG operating situations as ex. Recent trends in computer science have emphasized the use of numerical optimization methodologies in physically-based simulations. By treating time-stepping problems as optimization targets and employing optimization techniques, both the accuracy and efficiency of solvers have been significantly improved. This thesis begins with an exploration of nonlinear optimization theory, then proceeds to present novel algorithms designed to simulate non-equilibrated viscoelastic and elastoplastic solids implicitly, even under large time steps. Collaborative efforts within the computer graphics community have enabled the realistic digital reproduction of various daily life materials, such as snow, sand, water, and jelly. These research breakthroughs have had profound implications across diverse fields, such as gaming, film production, fashion design, robotics, and mechanical engineering analysis. Among the myriad of applications, the concept of contact remains a vital factor influencing simulation results, which motivated us to refocus our research on this area. Free-slip contact, frictional contact, and adhesive contact each exhibit their unique characteristics when integrated with different numerical methods. For meshless methods, like the Material Point Method (MPM), the presence of a background grid confers advantages in automatic collision detection, although the contacting surface is only implicitly defined. Conversely, mesh-based methods, such as the Finite Element Method (FEM), require considerable effort to query exact primitive contacting pairs. Due to the strict definition of the mesh, intersections must be entirely eliminated to avoid introducing significant artifacts in later stages of the process. Portugal, in line with the European Union, is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 (Net Zero), which implies a transition to sustainable energy sources. Climate change is all too evident, as extreme weather periods are occurring in a cyclical manner with greater brevity to such an extent that the grid operator must deal with production scenarios where it can no longer rely on hydroelectric production given the recurring drought situation. This situation increases dependence on thermal production using natural gas and imports. This has significant economic implications. Portugal has exploited its onshore wind potential, reaching an installed capacity of 5.671 MW by 2022. However, the expansion of onshore wind energy is limited to reinforcing the existing infrastructure. To overcome these challenges, it is necessary to expand the exploitation of the offshore wind potential that is already underway. This article proposes the location of offshore wind production platforms along the Portuguese coast. This allows for an analysis of offshore production and its optimization according to the minimum cost per MWh in the face of extreme scenarios, i.e., in periods of extreme drought where the hydroelectric production capacity is practically non-existent. The model is fed by using market price indications and the amount of energy needed for the following day. Using forecast data, the model adapts offshore wind production for the following day according to the minimization of the average market price. This study presents an optimization model adapted to combat the unpredictability of extreme weather conditions. This strategic framework significantly increases the resilience and reliability of offshore wind energy production, marking a significant advance in the management of renewable energy under the pressure of climate variability. Maximizing the Integration of a Battery Energy Storage System-Photovoltaic Distributed Generation for Power System Harmonic Reduction: An Overview

The highly variable power generated from a battery energy storage system (BESS)-photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) causes harmonic distortions in distribution systems (DSs) due to the intermittent nature of solar energy and high voltage rises or falls in the BESS. Harmonic distortions are major concerns in the DS, especially when the sizes and locations of these resources are sub-optimal. As a result, many studies are being performed on the optimal allocation of BESS/PVDG systems in distribution network systems. In this regard, this paper seeks to review the existing planning models, optimization methods and renewable energy resources that uncertainty models have employed in solving BESS/PVDGs allocation problems in terms of obtaining optimal solutions/allocations and curtailing the harmonic contents of the DSs. However, studies on optimal allocation planning of BESS/PVDGs have achieved minimum cost but were not able to meet the standard harmonic level of the DSs. The results identified GA, PSO and AIS as some of the most used methodologies while LP, MILP and different configurations of NLP were used in the model formulations of BESS/PVDGs problems. The results also revealed DC-link voltage and switching and grid voltage harmonics as the notable causes and sources of harmonic distortions in BESS/PVDG systems. The current allocation models presented in the recent literature for the planning of BESS/PVDGs do not include the variables necessary for curtailing the harmonic contents in their planning formulations. This paper, therefore, recommends an improved and all-encompassing planning model with an efficient intelligent search algorithm capable of obtaining a global optimum solution and curtailing harmonic distortions from the BESS/PVDG-connected DSs.

Robust Fractional MPPT-Based Moth-Flame optimization Algorithm for Thermoelectric Generation Applications

Depending on the temperature difference between the hot and cold sides of the thermoelectric generator (TEG), the output performance of the TEG can be produced. This means that it is necessary to force a TEG based on robust maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to operate close to its MPP at any given temperature or load. In this paper, an improved fractional MPPT (IFMPPT) is proposed in order to increase the amount of energy that can be harvested from TEGs. According to the suggested method, fractional order control is used. A moth-flame optimizer (MFO) was used to determine IFMPPT's optimal parameters. A comparison of the results obtained by the MFO is made with those obtained by a particle swarm optimizer, genetic algorithm, gray wolf optimizer, seagull optimization algorithm, and tunicate swarm algorithm in order to demonstrate MFO's superiority. IFMPPT's primary objective is to enhance dynamic responses and exclude steady-state oscillations. Consequently, incremental resistance and perturb and observe are compared with the proposed strategy's performance. It was revealed that IFMPPT provides superior tracking results both in dynamic and steady-state conditions when compared with traditional methods.
