This paper is motivated by the need to address the innovative development of algorithms to solve combinatorial problems, generally issued from decision making. Because modeling and resolution of this kind of problems is a software engineering subject, then to find better ways of developing algorithms, solvers and metaheuristics is our interest too. Here, we fixed some concepts from knowledge management, creativity and new software engineering trends applied in our work.

Corporate sustainability and stakeholder value trade-offs in project selection through optimization modeling: Application of investment banking

This study presents a new optimization model for quantitative sustainability measurement in net present value estimation process of corporate investments. Proposed model presents an innovative perspective for the transformation of the logic behind traditional investment project selection practices to the sustainable project selection in corporations. By using the proposed model, it is possible that investors' can find positive sustainability trade-offs without harming returns on investment. A case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed model in project selection decision-making processes. Expected net present value is employed to calculate the return of the project investment for project selection decision-stage. In order to identify stakeholder value trade-off gaps, proposed model with sustainability involvement is evaluated in contrast to the traditional net value method estimations of the model. Based on optimization results, comparative analysis of proposed sustainability cost involvement in net present value estimation with traditional net present value estimation in project selection practices restore positive trade-offs verifying the efficiency of proposed methodology.

Monitoring is usually among the first actions taken to help inform recovery planning for declining species, but these data are rarely used formally to inform conservation decision making. For example, Central Valley Chinook salmon were once abundant, but anthropogenic activities have led to widespread habitat loss and degradation resulting in significant population declines. Monitoring data suggest survival through the southern SacramentoSan Joaquin River Delta, in particular, may be a limiting factor for juvenile Chinook salmon outmigrating from the San Joaquin River and its tributaries. However, survival and routing monitoring data have not been formally used to inform water management in a decision analytic framework. Here, we illustrate how estimates derived from disjunct monitoring data can be used to inform water management and as a basis for adaptively managing flows. We aggregated a meta-analysis of Chinook salmon smolt survival and routing estimates through the south Delta with other sources of data to develop a survival and routing simulation model to estimate optimal flows for the San Joaquin River during smolt outmigration from February-May. We found that large flow pulses at predictable times during the spring are projected to be optimal for increasing Chinook salmon smolt survival to the San Francisco Bay and that optimal scenarios differed somewhat with water year type. Sensitivity analysis revealed temperature and smolt outmigration timing are driving optimal pulse distribution and that water allocation changes little with parameter uncertainty. This case study highlights the utility of the decision-analytic framework for solving conservation problems.

The development of biomass-based cogeneration energy systems in Malaysia is progressing to meet the circular economy concept and sustainability goal. This comprehensive review aims to report recent advancements in biomass-based cogeneration/biomass co-firing technology in Malaysia correlated with the optimization modeling role. First, this work presents the outlook and current scenario of cogeneration systems in Malaysia by observing performance and the challenges confronted by the technologies. Next, investigation of technical issues concerning the key players of the technologies and the biomass supply chain. This work had prepared using quantitative content-based analysis-meta-analysis. The practical implication of this review enables a complex optimization model that integrates biomass-based cogeneration and biomass supply chain considering economic and environmental viability. It will further enhance progress toward the Malaysian "Industry 4.0-driven" energy initiative. A novel optimization model grounded on Industry 4.0 parameters will foster new opportunities for researchers.

RSM-Based optimization of Bioactive Extraction and Characterization from Olea europaea Leaves: Antioxidant and Phenolic Profile by LC-MS/MS

The bioactive properties of olive leaf extract (OLE) were investigated using various extraction methods, including microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), conventional extraction (CE), and maceration (Mc). Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze and optimize extraction parameters, such as "microwave power" and "extraction time" to maximize yield, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (measured by DPPH, ABTS(+), and CUPRAC assays). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for DPPH/ABTS(+) ranged from 8.57 to 14.80 mg/L, with the highest antioxidant activity observed in Mc. TPC and TFC values ranged from 85.21 to 169.20 mg GAE/g dry-weight and 1.49 to 111.98 mg Qrc/g dry-weight, respectively, with MAE yielding the highest polyphenol content. LC-MS/MS analysis identified eight major components in OLE, primarily oleuropein (12.99, 11.66, and 10.65 mg/ml) and quercetin (857, 231, and 1368 mg/L), with concentrations varying according to the extraction methods for MAE, CE, and Mc, respectively. The optimized conditions for CE (t = 30 min) and MAE (t = 30 min/350 W) were determined with desirabilities of 91.1% and 82.2%, respectively. Overall, extraction method, time, and MAE power significantly influenced response variables (P < 0.05). MAE power (Watt) was identified as a more significant parameter than time. PCA analysis indicated that Mc was the most effective extraction method, while MAE at 250W showed the least efficiency, especially as higher power and longer durations negatively impacted bioactive metabolites. Notably, the RSM-optimized MAE parameters closely aligned with Mc in the PCA, suggesting mutual validation between these approaches in extracting bioactive components.

Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) provides an important approach of unsupervising learning, but it faces computational challenges when applied into clustering of high-dimensional datasets. In this paper, a class of novel nonmonotone gradient-descent algorithms are developed for solving box-constrained NMF problems. Unlike existing algorithms in the literature that update each matrix factor individually by fixing another one, our algorithms simultaneously update the paired matrix factors by leveraging adaptive projected Barzilai-Borwein directions and appropriate step sizes generated by the developed nonmonotone line search rules. Theoretically, it is proved that the developed algorithms are well defined and globally convergent. Extensive numerical tests on public image datasets demonstrate that the developed algorithms in this paper outperform the state-of-the-art ones, in terms of clustering performance, computational efficiency, and robustness of mining noisy data.

Purpose The present research aims to investigate the individual and interactive effects of chlorine dose/dissolved organic carbon ratio, pH, temperature, bromide concentration, and reaction time on trihalomethanes (THMs) formation in surface water (a drinking water source) during disinfection by chlorination in a prototype laboratory-scale simulation and to develop a model for the prediction and optimization of THMs levels in chlorinated water for their effective control. Methods A five-factor Box-Behnken experimental design combined with response surface and optimization modeling was used for predicting the THMs levels in chlorinated water. The adequacy of the selected model and statistical significance of the regression coefficients, independent variables, and their interactions were tested by the analysis of variance and t test statistics. Results The THMs levels predicted by the model were very close to the experimental values (R-2=0.95). optimization modeling predicted maximum (192 mu g/l) TMHs formation (highest risk) level in water during chlorination was very close to the experimental value (186.8 +/- 1.72 mu g/l) determined in laboratory experiments. The pH of water followed by reaction time and temperature were the most significant factors that affect the THMs formation during chlorination. Conclusion The developed model can be used to determine the optimum characteristics of raw water and chlorination conditions for maintaining the THMs levels within the safe limit.
